According to The Band's Robbie Robertson, he wrote this song while he was staying at Levon Helm's parents house in Arkansas. Robbie has stated in numerous interviews and books over the decades that Levon's father, Nell Helm was a very proud Southerner who told him many stories about his life growing up on a cotton farm as well as stories about the lives of his ancestors. Nell Helm proudly said to Robbie one day, "You know what Robbie? The South *will* rise again someday." Robbie then took all of Nell's stories, emotions and feelings of Southern pride and wrote this song. This was Robbie's tribute to the South and all the many proud Southern men and women who thought & felt exactly like Nell Helm did.
Robbie is a clown and has said the lyrics need to ne changed and he done that in his last performance. RIp Levon. You should never had let Robbie into your home.
@@dwightswan2265 Your right he is a clown! I hadn't heard that he said that, I believe it though. I am so damn tired of everyone trying to change everything that has to do with the south & the Confederacy.

He talks about the life of a professional musician and plays some Rock'n'Roll.
Best cover of this song I've ever heard. His voice is plaintive and desperate; as you would imagine a starving, shoeless Confederate to sound. Only boys from the South could pull off such a hauntingly beautiful cover.
It kills me when I bring the Crowes up in southern rock conversations with a group of pals and half of them don't even know THE BEST SOUTHERN BAND EVER

Commendable performance of The Band's "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Black Crowes. Great job guys and a tribute to one of the greatest bands who ever played..........The Band.
Marilyn Nixon What's ironic is you are being racist towards a Southerner for being from the South because of it's racist past. And it's such a double standard. See people as individuals, and judge those individuals on their individual character, period. Greetings from Alabama.
Carlo Von Sexron what's even more ironic is I can mock dixie for being stupid only to have it defended by people who don't even know what the word racist means. The only song that me feel the mood of the south and how it would feel to experience what the south went thru and I'm so thankful to be from Atlanta and my city did rise again.
This is a great version! Really expresses the dedication of young men to a futile cause. It’s always the young who have to pay for the grandiosity of the old.

Ive heard alot of Artists doing their version of this great old song of the south.. its hard to beat the Black Crowes version...Chris Robinson nails the vocals
I'm a huge fan of classic rock, for me Chris Robinson is one of the few singers who still sings with a ton of soul. This one's beautiful! Also if you've seen the footage of Jimmy Page with the Crowes, he does the old Zep stuff better than any active singer today! Levon Helm still rules, but if the Band isn't around, the Crowes deserve this shot! especially when its that good.
Seeing Things For the First Time confirms your statement. My peeps wore blue and I love this song. Walked down in Richmond and let my mind drift. Tredegar Iron Works and all.
The music and lyrics were actually written by Robbie Robertson, but Levon Helm sang it with great soul and deep-seeded pain. If you read up on the song, that's what Robertson wanted to portray in the lyrics.
A great version, second only to The Band. Loved the use of the organ in that verse. It's a very moving song, even for someone like me who lives far away in Australia.
A truly excellent version of this epic song, the best that I've heard second only to The Band's version, which considering that it's been 45 years since they recorded it is high praise indeed! What a wonderful job boys, you make The Band proud I'm sure, wherever they are, especially J.R.R. who gets to line his mattress with a few more bucks. Superb! .
Poor Cheryl Crow was out of her legue and her comfort zone with this song and with Honky Tonk Woman also. Natalie was doing a good job and of cause Pat was sublime as always! 😊
Damn, ain't nothing that them brothers, can't do, love the crowes, been a fan since their first album, over 40yrs old now, so glad they haven't changed their style, stayed true to their roots ...

This was a fantastic cover. I played this and the clip from "The Last Waltz" back and forth. The two versions certainly are incredible in their own way and there was definitely much more emotion with the Band's version, but I feel the Crowes did a great job in adding their own stamp on it without losing anything felt from The Band's version.
