- 'What words adequately express the pain and suffering of 50 men, women and children lost, and so many injured?' asked New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern during her address at a memorial service for the Christchurch victims. 'I thought there were none. And then I came here and was met with this simple greeting. As-salaam Alaikum. Peace be upon you.' She says those words 'have left us humbled, and they have left us united. I have to admit, in the last few weeks, Jacinda Adern has shown the difference between a politician and a leader. Great speech.

Sign language for the deaf is a national language in NZ along with English and Maori.

However, here in Australia we mostly do have a sign language translate, especially with Labor governments I feel like, but that part might not be accurate. I also think it's amazing that in NZ they have Maori as another main language, and that their leaders are learning it. Australia might've done something similar of course if not for the fact that no one Aboriginal language is spoken across the country.

She was speaking in an opening introduction in Te Reo Māori, the original language of tangata whenua (indigenous people of New Zealand). In her speech, she made a recognition of how important Maori people are in New Zealand as well as their ways of "Act of giving" (Manaakitanga)..
