I am guessing the reason performance is worse when plugged in is because the electricity coming into the machine from the wall adds additional heat to the system that the color simply cannot handle. So, that is kind of depressing to me that the cooling system is that close to throttling constantly. I get the MacBook Air is not designed for really heavy loads, but nonetheless, better cooling is better for longevity.

I sold my MacBook Pro M1 13" (2020) 8GB/512GB and got the ASUS Zephyrus G14 with the same spec in the video for $1399 during the sale on Best Buy. 120Hz display is just so much nicer than the Mac. Definitely enjoying gaming on the G14. Considering its almost identical in size, I'm totally loving the switch and the performance upgrade for my use case. Battery life is surprisingly good on this for a windows machine. I thought it'd be hard to move out of the Apple Ecosystem but it surprisingly isn't. Just 2 negatives. Bad webcam and the build quality isn't as solid as the Mac.
I bought the G14(2022) as well for $1399 during the best buy sale. It's a beast of a machine while still being super portable and light! Extremely happy with my decision!
MacBooks have amazing hardware but I absolutely despise Apple’s pricing. You can’t upgrade RAM, can’t upgrade SSD and Apple charges insane prices for higher RAM and SSD versions. And if the laptop breaks down, you can just remove the SSD and recover your data. Unless you buy iCloud subscription of course. This is a huge deal breaker. Thanks but no thanks Apple.
Counter point: Air’s battery life, longevity, super sharp screen and insanely good portability was made for folks who want a solid laptop that does light gaming and everything else well. This is not a heavy gaming laptop, but IMO my experience with this laptop, and it’s ability to handle da Vinci resolve and audio mastering so well- it’s defy a keeper. It’s clean, lightweight and the tactile keyboard makes the experience a good one.
To be fair to the MacBook Air: It is not a gaming laptop, not even close. It was designed for business use on the go. It excels in this space. It weighs less than a ream of paper while being silent.
ive been having the same question but for last gen m1 air and 2021 g14. i got to borrow the mac and it felt really nice as it was my first time using a mac, hardware quality was excellent. but im split because i still like to game and i am used to managing my way around a windows/linux laptop already, so the g14 seems appealing
I've had the last 3 generations of G14s, it is a good laptop, but with many, many problems, quality control issues, and support from Asus to fix the problems. The G14 is a good laptop, but good luck finding one without any issues out of the box. The G14 remains in my heart but Asus never seems to fully fix any of the issues that are unfortunately very common, such as not being able to get the laptop to sleep (both 2022 and 2021 models, and so much so for the 2022 that you can find it sometimes for a lower price than the 2021), various power consumption/stability issues, and the extremely common screen/backlight bleeding problems with the panels they use. A lot of problems have workarounds, and the Zephyrus G14 subreddit has a lot of tips to get the G14 has good as can be, just be weary if you're going to pick one up, and be ready to do some tuning. IMO, if you're looking for a 14inch gaming laptop (and have the budget), the newer Alienware x14 is near perfect, and comes with intel/Nvidia combo which is a lot better than AMDs in terms of stability and compatibility/performance with many applications and games. Otherwise, the 2021 G14 is a great pick, better than the 2022 6700S model without a doubt, if you can find it for a good enough price, it may be a better pick than the 2021 m1 Air, and the feeling of a high refresh rate display is something that once you experience, it's hard to want to go back to anything 60hz.
@@StevenArtistry alienware laptops are ridiculously expensive in my country and most models are not even available. im also more about battery life so amd or alder lake-p options are more appealing. but thank you for your comment, i will take it into consideration
@@lukaszjeczalik1843 now I’d say the 2022 is solid after many many updates and fixes, but the 21 being usually on sale can drop down to 899 which is an absolute steal for price to performance. which variant of ROG G14 did you get, please specify. Also how is its performance and your experience with it so far? I am also thinking to get one but not sure if should get the 2021 or 2022 model, AMD or Nvidia one so would be helpful.
@@nvduk3 I got the mid level 2021 ROG G14, a bit different from the video but I got a great deal on it and it was basically half the cost of the 2022 version. Specs of mine are AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS, NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti, 512gb SSD, 16gb DDR4 RAM, 16:9 QHD 120ghz refresh IPS screen. Performance is superb. Runs every game smoothly that I throw at it at 1080p maximum settings. You will need to put it in performance mode for that and the fans run a bit loud but it's not noticeable if you put on headphones. If you're not into gaming, you can put it on silent mode and basically do any productivity work or watch movies and there would be no noise. You can also turn off the NVIDIA card to run graphics directly from the integrated AMD graphics to save battery. I do this when I'm commuting/working away from home, the battery lasts 10 hours. The 2022 model does have a few things that improved upon like having a webcam, having a bigger trackpad, bigger 16:10 screen, CPU and GPU improvements. But for me, it wasn't enough to justify spending another $1300 for it. I got mine at $1299. Hope that helps!
Same here. Gonna run mainly Linux, Mac OS X and Windows through VM passthrough in a box. This is perfect Power user computer. Was thinking about 14-inch M1 Pro with 32gb ram, but I will be able to run all systems on this one. Plenty of ram to do it and enough performance.

1:11 don't forget Samsung and Apple were caught cheating their benchmarks beacuse during benchmarks the processors would run at full speed/OC themselves for a short period of time, after which return to their usual underclock/under volt. This is done to prevent overheating and that's why these scores usually aren't accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt
@@ThisIsTechToday apple also in my opinion, there's just no proof that apple beacuse of IOS being far more restrictive than andriod That would also explain why though the M2 has better single core performance and almost the same multicore performance but the R9 still performs better in tasks like importing and editing I'm also surprised how ARM processors are keeping with X86 now Can you please make a M2 Ipad air vs M2 macbook air?
My thoughts: It's better to use a powerful laptop like the ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop for productivity. The logic behind this is that when your laptop has the ability to handle demanding tasks such as gaming, it can also efficiently manage productivity tasks like Photoshop, video editing, and others. It's like having a powerful weapon and using it for medium jobs. Additionally, Windows allows for compatibility with a wide range of software, making it a versatile choice for various tasks.
Need your advise in my decision: Which one should I choose if the price is the same: M1 Macbook Air, 16gb ram, 256 ssd Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, Amd ryzen 7 5800h, rtx 3070, 32 gb ram, 2tb ssd?
I’ve owned a m2 16gb MacBook Air for around 6 months and I gotta say it is a fantastic machine for students, and people looking for a productivity killer. But as far as gaming and more demanding tasks go it really wouldn’t be my go to. It can run macOS supported games usually decently, but I enjoy my steam games and so I use a windows virtual machine, but the downside is it absolutely tanks in performance and it really can’t run much of anything. I chose to switch to a windows laptop with a Ryzen 7 processor for the sole purpose of being able to handle those larger tasks and being able to play my favorite games at a reasonable frame rate. Again not knocking the air. It’s a great machine for what it’s made for, which is not gaming.

Probably the components for the Face ID system are thicker than the screen thickness. On iPhones and iPads, they have more thickness, thus more room to put those components. Until Apple figure out how to make those components thin, we will have to wait.

The exact model of g14 that i wanted to compare with the macbook air m2. this is my freshman year into college and i need a laptop for school, im a windows fan but at the same time macbook is like the textbook answer when it comes to laptop choice for school. Both laptops has its pros and cons which makes them extremely hard to choose for me. I like the battery life and the quality feel on the macbook and the "value" of it. By value i mean that if i dont need it for school anymore i can prob sell it online or give it to my mom because she currently have a 2014 macbook air that she uses for daily web browsing and watching shows. Shes only uses mac os and not windows. But then the G14 has better performance(better multicore on the cpu and way more powerful GPU), a design that attracts me more, more upgradability(ram and storage), a more "free environment"(you can do more stuff on windows than mac OS), but it also has cons like weaker battery life, more heat/noise, heavier (in terms of laptop itself and the charger), cheaper on the feel (plastic vs macbooks aluminum design), less "valuable" over time (its technically a gaming laptop afterall, and gaming laptops battery usually dies faster than non gaming laptops, and not everyone would want a used gaming laptop)
Great comparison! Really like your factual style, also nice that you didn't went for the ""emotional"" thumbnails eviews so many others have. Also you're one of the fews to mention actual ssd speeds on the air and not say "oh it's half the speed so it sucks"
i am deciding between the g14 amd 7 6800HS and the MBA 15" with 16Gb. which one would go for? in terms of screen, the macbook display looks best but i love the 144Hz on the g14. also, in terms of performance, since the video used the amd 9, how would you think the amd 7 would stack up?
Thoughts on the G14 as a secondary device for music production? Recording on the go, mixing, live tracks, composing. Been a mac person but want to do some light gaming on the go as well so seeing if I can knock out two tasks with one device.
O am no expert but, I think music prediction relies more on the CPU than GPU right? I am not totally sure but if so, you actually might be better off with another device with an Alder Lake (12th gen) Intel CPU as those processors are simply faster than AMD Ryzen 6000 series. However, the Asus G14 is a good all around device, but the CPU is not as strong as other options this year. That being said, if you like battery life at all, DO NOT listen to anything I just said and go for Ryzen as Intel Alder Lake has abysmal battery life allegedly due to the Efficiency cores not behaving nicely
Your key words were "on the go" and light gaming. If you want the ability to have some decent battery life even off the plug, the G14 is one of the gaming laptops that doesn't come to a sad crawl off the plug, so that may be worth a shot. It is important to keep in mind how battery life isn't the most amazing when pushed to the max, but the GPU is what pulls the most power here, and music production is primarily CPU oriented, so it may not be that bad! I honestly really like the G14.
you can even do that with a 5-6 year old laptop. For some lightweight solution I can suggest Huawei matebooks with 16 inch screen and 12th gen intel chips. You don't need separate gpu for music production at all.
@@tarkgundogdu8940 problem is since they want to do gaming on the go they really want a dGPU. So while your suggestion I’m sure is great for music production, I can say from experience, that gaming on laptops with dGPUs is much better than even Intel Iris Xe graphics which can only run eSports games at best
I remember trying to play some indie steam games with my old MacBook air to play with some friends who had pcs. I remember my air thermal throttling so bad it went from 50ish fps to 2fps. Not surprising that thermal throttling is still an issue with such a small thin form factor.

A thing to note is the zephyrus is a gaming laptop which tailored obviously towards gamers while the mac is for daily use with little extra things. Windows laptops are not as efficient as macbooks due to the OS but have higher performance in otherwise everything, its just at the battery department they fall short. if u want a laptop just buy a macbook if u want a PC get a windows machine.
That sounds about right. The G14 is a really great laptop. Definitely my favorite PC Gaming laptop so far.

Don't look at the new apple vision 😅
I love Apple products, but I, too, find this impossibility to upgrade RAM or SSD quite wrong. I know it’s all precise design, but it’s just not right
The zephyrus would probably be my next rig.
For the average user doing light things its just not worth for the money.
To be fair to the MacBook Air: It is not a gaming laptop, not even close. It was designed for business use on the go. It excels in this space. It weighs less than a ream of paper while being silent.
Great comparison & review but at 6:22 the MacBook air actually has around 20% higher single-core score, since the G14 scored lower.
Good catch! I must have missed that. My bad.
ive been having the same question but for last gen m1 air and 2021 g14. i got to borrow the mac and it felt really nice as it was my first time using a mac, hardware quality was excellent. but im split because i still like to game and i am used to managing my way around a windows/linux laptop already, so the g14 seems appealing
@@StevenArtistry why is g14 2021 better than 2022?
@@lukaszjeczalik1843 now I’d say the 2022 is solid after many many updates and fixes, but the 21 being usually on sale can drop down to 899 which is an absolute steal for price to performance.

Haha, glad I could help!
which variant of ROG G14 did you get, please specify.
How is the G14 any problems ?
I am really confused.

Samsung. It was just Samsung. Not Apple.
@@ThisIsTechToday apple also in my opinion, there's just no proof that apple beacuse of IOS being far more restrictive than andriod
That would also explain why though the M2 has better single core performance and almost the same multicore performance but the R9 still performs better in tasks like importing and editing
I'm also surprised how ARM processors are keeping with X86 now
Can you please make a M2 Ipad air vs M2 macbook air?
My thoughts: It's better to use a powerful laptop like the ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop for productivity. The logic behind this is that when your laptop has the ability to handle demanding tasks such as gaming, it can also efficiently manage productivity tasks like Photoshop, video editing, and others. It's like having a powerful weapon and using it for medium jobs. Additionally, Windows allows for compatibility with a wide range of software, making it a versatile choice for various tasks.
yeah just got a good deal on a g16. bought it for engineering school so I can do my CAD work on the go.
Need your advise in my decision:
Which one should I choose if the price is the same:
M1 Macbook Air, 16gb ram, 256 ssd
Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, Amd ryzen 7 5800h, rtx 3070, 32 gb ram, 2tb ssd?
Really amazed to see how well asus zephyrus G14 performed, quite shocking.
The g14 goes on sale occasionally and almost every buys it when it goes on sale, so the price comparison is closer than expected
That went exactly as I expected.
M1/M2 are perfect for music production. dead silent.

@@ThisIsTechToday yeah it's so much of it these days too. Let people like what they like y'know? And great, can't wait.
Probably the components for the Face ID system are thicker than the screen thickness. On iPhones and iPads, they have more thickness, thus more room to put those components. Until Apple figure out how to make those components thin, we will have to wait.
Sure, I still want it though.
What is the better upgrade for playing games on a MacBook Air? Ram so ssd?
Not a bad video, Thanks ,but for someone with over 15 year in technology , I'll choose the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and wait there's more a complete gaming PC with 32" monitor with headset , mouse, speaker, mic ,mic stand , gaming chair ,4k camera and some money to spare ,before i buy a M2 Macbook Air that i need to put on it side to cool down ,try working for a boss and explain that your system needs to cool down because it over heating, Using the M2 Macbook Air for gaming or Hi-end designing is like using a Golden knife to cut down a tree , when we all know you need a chainsaw for the job, it may not look as pretty but the job get done , and that the point
I'd consider the Mac if it could play at least 1 of the games in my steam library.
Windows fanatic, really?
Great comparison! Really like your factual style, also nice that you didn't went for the ""emotional"" thumbnails
eviews so many others have.
Bigger screen. The choice depends on your needs and preferences. If you plan on gaming on it even sometimes, macbook alone won't do it.
You will be able to game on the go with the asus. I have emulators on my Mac for on the go. That’s a different topic. Just bring your charger
you can even do that with a 5-6 year old laptop.
Not surprising that thermal throttling is still an issue with such a small thin form factor.

lol, dang. Yeah, I think gaming for PC and Mac for productivity and regular use makes more sense to me if you can swing having two computers.
@@ThisIsTechToday The MacBook Air has been reduced to a dedicated media player for the TV in the living room. It does that job great, although it can't stream in 4K
Gaming laptop vs macbook air. .. wow I bet you never thought we would go there.
Honestly, Apple is making PC hardware look pretty bad lately, so it's not a crazy idea.
I own Zephyrus g15.
With ROG G15 or 14 I can upgrade to 48gb of ram, a 2tb and.. for I paid, I got zero dangles and an amazing Ryzen+ Nvidia or RX. MacBooks... They have a notch and no ports.
So only reason to buy MacBook is because it's prestigious and has better build quality? Battery would not be a problem in integrated video card windows laptops and they cost half the amount MacBook does.
It is way more efficient, shockingly capable at it's power draw, and has great battery life. Not everyone wants a windows laptop.
Slap Linux on the G14 either Ubuntu or Fedora and it’ll be more stable and battery life jumps to 10+ hours pretty Awsome and since it all AMD the drivers are built in
