The knocking was probably because it had no oil pressure for a moment. When ever you do work in the engine it's recommend cranking the engine over with the fuel pump disconnected to build oil pressure then reconnect the fuel and try to start

So it was so rounded I couldn’t take it off, so I welded a spanner to the bolt so they were basically one piece, then whacked it loose! I then had to cut the spanner in half as it got stuck on the subframe so didn’t spin any further😅😅😅 But just by making it one piece allowed me to have something to bite onto to undo it !!!

Don't mix steel seal with red coolant as it won't work. The steel seal crystallises when the water heats up and starts glogging up water ways.

Water pump are known problems on these and most definitely headgaskets

As mini enthusiast and owner of a gen 2 I can tellypu the early gen 1s like yours have a crappy N14 engines which where very problematic
The N14 is the early gen 2 engine.. its a Tritec W10 engine in the non-supercharged gen 1.
Actually you will find that Gen 1 Minis have a good solid engine if maintained and Gen 2 Minis have the problematic Peugeot engine in them.
