      And what about that LIST of guys who popped on the “PED/banned substance” years back in 2003 I think it was? I like Papi, but his name was on it. Mark McGwire basically admitted to doing it and has never been considered. Now Barry Bonds never admitted to it or was shown with bottles of things in his locker...soooooo. The controversy will ALWAYS surround him.

      All MLB players made “decent money” for the time. These guys felt they deserved more. Which they probably did, but the system was set up in such a way that a player’s salary had little to do with his talent, and more to do with what other work he could perform outside baseball.

      The version I learned is that Jackson took the money and agreed to participate and part way through the series just couldn't do it out of moral obligation, pride, loyalty to the White Sox and fans or just because the money wasn't coming like it was supposed to from Rothstein. Who knows really. Then tried to win it single handedly by hitting the damn daylights out of the ball. But with the other seven still tanking intentionally it was too much for one hitter to overcome.

    • @kevin6293
      @kevin6293 4 года назад +9

      Lifax, please do some actual research and stop perpetuating myths. Jackson’s performance clearly shows that he was throwing the games. In their first 4 losses, Jackson went 4 for 16, with 0 RBI, and 0 for 5 w/ RISP, and had a .625 OPS. In their 3 wins, plus the final loss in which they started the game down 5-0, he went 8 for 16 with a BB and a HR, 6 RBI, and a 1.279 OPS. The numbers speak for themselves.

    baseball teams throwing games was actually quite common back then, and the black sox scandal only came to light during an investigation into the Cubs throwing games. The "Black Sox" are considered the only team to have thrown the World Series (even though they were all acquitted), but who's to say other teams didn't throw the series as well, and the 1919 White Sox were simply the only team to be caught doing so?

      Allagí Leaving aside the very real debate over whether Jackson was even involved with the fix, what about Babe Ruth and Willie Mays, who were both known to take amphetamines before and during games? What about Ty Cobb, who engaged in every dirty play imaginable to get an edge? What about Gaylord Perry, who built his entire career around an illegal pitch? What about Bud Selig, who colluded with other owners to keep player salaries down and looked the other way as obviously juiced players boosted ticket sales? For that matter, what about the dozens of racists, wife beaters, and otherwise terrible people that can be found in the Hall of Fame? I guess we should kick all these people out to preserve its precious integrity?

    • @Allagi22
      @Allagi22 4 года назад +5

      @@stonecoggins107 Shoeless Joe Jackson admitted to taking cash in his trial regardless of his illiteracy he was no idiot, best player on that team and the whole world knew it, and he certainly wasn't deaf. Jackson played with those men he knew of the plot, he took money to take a dive, and yeah obviously he played well, but he still took the money. You talk of "precious integrity" as if it's a joke. The reason the MLB became a thing is because of integrity and basic rules agreed upon by all professional players, chief among them: "Don't Bet Against your own team" Baseball is a game of tradition and rules and those that break that line don't deserve any hall of fame, including Shoeless Joe. Do you remember when boxing was popular in America? It used to be huge. From Joe Frazier, to Muhammad Ali, Liston, Hearns, Tyson, Mayweather even today. The reason it lost popularity is because boxing is easy to fix, and it was fixed, often times in a one on one fight, it's easy to influence one fighter to take a dive. Boxing feel by the wayside, it was too easy to manipulate the game's integrity. You mock my words, but if NO ONE had trust in the game of baseball, if EVERYONE was considered to be a cheater WHO THE FUCK WOULD WATCH?! If your game has no rules, if you're allowed to bet against your team that you play on or manage then it's not a game at all. It's a fucking play put on by gamblers who know the outcome. I'm well aware baseball has a rocky history. Also aware taking a bribe to take a dive in baseball deserves a ban for life. Any fan who actually understands the game should realize that. McGuire won't get into the hall. Sosa won't get into the hall. Bonds won't get into the hall. And Shoeless Joe Jackson won't get into the hall. Where the FUCK do you draw the line if not for accepting a bribe to throw the World Series? He admitted in court. He accepted a bribe in cash to throw the series. No defense against that if you have ANY love for Baseball at all.

    The most overlooked key point of the series was in the first inning in game 1. With the White Sox trailing 4-0, they had runners on second and third and nobody out. They failed to score. If they had been able to get those two runs, it's 4-2 and course of the game changes drastically

    The player who Eddie Cicotte hit with that pitch - Morrie Rath - remains one of my favorite baseball figures. He was a member of the White Sox seven years prior to that key moment in the 1919 World Series, and even formed a double play combo with eventual Black Sox accusee Buck Weaver. Furthermore, in 1910, Rath was traded from Philly to Cleveland along with a player to be named later. Seven days hence, that deal was completed. The player to be named later was none other than Joseph Walker Jackson, a.k.a. Shoeless Joe.
    So why do I like Rath? Like a many others, he simply played in the wrong era (credit to Bill James and/or SABR for some of this background):
    1. Rath was an outstanding defensive second baseman at a time when 2B was still a position where teams often buried good-hit-no-field types. The modern-day equivalent would probably be a great fielding first baseman with pedestrian abilities at the plate. Today, a Morrie Rath type at second would not only earn some recognition for his defense, but would likely be a perennial Gold Glove contender (an award that didn't start until the 1950s).
    2. Offensively, Rath was particularly weak in two statistical areas that were (and still are) overvalued: batting average and runs batted in. In contrast, he was better than average in two areas that were either undervalued or completely ignored at the time: OBP and runs scored. Today, the "Moneyball" GMs would have found a place for him. No, he probably would not have been an All-Star, but his type of player has frequently enjoyed lengthy MLB careers in our era - I'm thinking Marco Scutaro or Mark Ellis as reasonable analogs.
    3. Rath suffered an offseason head injury that screwed him up both mentally and physically for a few years. He toiled in the minors after his breakthrough 1912 season before making his return in 1919 (one year after serving in WWI). And I'll admit I'm absolutely spit-ballin' here, but that injury possibly could have played a part in his suicide years after his career. Nowadays, he would have gone through strict concussion protocol and received treatment accordingly.
    4. Did I mention World War I? I always throw a what-might-have-been asterisk on any player who served, as we'll never know how it altered their career trajectory. No, war did not affect Rath in the way that it did, say, Pete Alexander (and certainly not the way it changed things for Bun Troy or Elmer Gedeon), but it must have had some impact. He was 30 years old, he had gotten his on-field skills back on track - so much so that he came back to contribute to Cincinnati's 1919 and 1920 seasons.

Thank GOD for baseball-reference.com. They have every single play from every single game of the 1919 World Series. Just look it up and learn something.
