@@francodivolta9066 I can’t say I’ve heard of Opposing Force, my best friend is the one who has been teaching me about all things Half-Life so I’ll ask him about it! But I’d like to try out as much as I can, so hopefully ☺️

It's called a mass spectrometer. They were testing an alien crystal.
When exited by specific forms of energy of the correct frequency, the crystal will resonate and the amplitude of the vibrations will grow.
This crystal ( from xen) began to resonate beyond a certain threshold and it destabilised the fabric of spacetime opening dimensional rifts and portals.
This crystal caused a rift between zen and earth allowing aliens to teleport into the facility.
They increased the power to the mass spectrometer beyond safety levels which caused the crystal to resonate and start an uncontrollable chain reaction, a resonance cascade which tore open a gateway between
our two worlds that destroyed the main parts of the facility. The gateway allowed aliens to flood to earth.

to answer your question @ 4:06 it's how older games did saving/loading screens seamlessly to not take you out of the game and unimmerse you.
if you ever played an elder scrolls and tried fast traveling on early era console it took forever in terms of being in and out of the game, developers remedied this by adding clever things like the open cut scenes like the one you experienced or in another example for those resident evil fans of the original games the classic opening squeaky door load screen.
