I saw this clip as a kid and all I could remember who is that dude shredding that f'n guitar. It is amazing when someone is at the top of their game how they standout. Thanks for posting, because I would have never figured who this cat is. Actually check out the bass man, he was wearing him thump out! I liked Carson because he had an orchestra, I say bring the orchestra back. Maybe this would make more kids interested in band. Still today I wish I had learned to play an instrument as a kid.
Sleazy gene simmons was asked by Cher, his GF at the time and best friends with Diana to do her and Diana a favor and in no time simmons was cheating on cher with diana and no doubt recommended Bob to work with Diana.
I can watch this over and over because this performance is a prime example of what sets Miss Ross apart from her other female peers from her era.So girly and sexy rolled up into beauty and flirtation. I think she wanted the band to start the song while she removed her animal jumpsuit to get the immediate feel of the song before she hit the stage and altho she bluffed the lyrics she pulled it off and killed it with the ending vocals and that skip to give Johnny a kiss and pranced away with that hair. Fabulous!
Diana Ross looked stunning and she sounded stunning and despite her forgetting the lyrics, probably and more then likely, this was her first time performing this song and showing her veteran capabilities as the stellar showwomen she is she seemlessly kept the song going despite losing the lyrics and keeping time with the music all the while keeping her cool, thereby saving her her performance .this performance shows the difference between awanna be and a true professional..And she clearly showed she's a pro. Of the first order.

Agree Wizboy, this performance was way off, up on lyrics but her superstar instincts knew how to save the performance. I was at a concert where she lost her voice, and instead she came out in two different costumes and turned it into a fashion show. Fabulous.
My favorite Diana song (and not easy to pick a favorite). Love that she just SINGS the song and no vocal acrobatics. Still sounds great today at age 79 too.
I love how you wordered: no vocal acrobatics!!! Some black singers try too hard to sound "black"..have you seen Arethas perfomance on divas? MAN!!! I actually thought she was gonna p...... on stage , may she rest in peace , but I never, ever crave to see her in concert, I've seen Donna, Dionne, etc. and they sound beautifully without trying to sound "black " whatever that is.
Such a pro ... completely flubbed the words, but just kept on going, and it didn't even matter. The Tonight Show was merely a means to get the song out there ... mission accomplished.
