David Bowie: Top 10 Songs (x3)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Is it possible to distill David Bowie's massive output--27-plus albums, hundreds of songs--into a top 10 list? They said we were crazy, but we did it anyway.
No matter what we include or leave out, there will be miles of controversy over the picks. Bowie's prodigious output started with his self titled in 1967 but he really broke through with Space Oddity from 1969. Hunky Dory gave us Life on Mars? and Changes. Ziggy further catapulted him into the stratosphere with Starman, Suffragette City, Moonage Daydream... and then he just kept going. Jean Genie, Rebel Rebel, Young Americans, Fame, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes, Let's Dance, China Girl... it's a long list of hits and that's only the half of it.
With so many to choose from, you won't be surprised to find that there isn't a lot of carryover on the three lists. Did any song make all three? You'll have to watch and find out.
For our patrons, we also released our 11-20 list, which you can find on our Patreon channel below.
You can hear any of these tracks by checking out our Spotify playlist: open.spotify.c...

This is a tremendous list. Every song here has been among my top 10 at some point in my life.
I share Five Years Life on Mars Heroes and The Jean Genie with you, the latter having what must be the dirtiest guitar riff ever! Oh yeah.
@@drdavid1963 Check the New York Dolls Personality Crisis, Vietnamese Baby or Looking For A Kiss for Johnny Thunders' dirty riffs - their debut album came out in 1973 but they already performed those songs by the time Bowie came to New York. They are a clear influence on Aladdin Sane.
PS - The New York Dolls debut album was produced by The Todd.
I love to see red sails is getting the appreciation it deserves
So many great songs to choose from!

Ranking Bowie albums was a tough exercise. Ranking Bowie songs? Next to impossible.
I don't even know if these are the best Bowie songs. I'm just picking 10 songs I'm into this week.
1. Heroes (Single Version). Great example of production elevating a song. It's a pretty simple song about Tony Visconti cheating on his wife. But, Fripp's wild guitar soundscapes and Bowie's gated vocal effect take make it epic.
2. Teenage Wildlife (SM). Not exactly Heroes part 2, but it seems like Bowie and Fripp were aiming for that.
3. Suffragette City (ZS). Cool, almost proto-punk song. I like the "Hey Man" motif on the verses.
4. Win (YA). Just a really cool tune. It's really laid back and Bowie's vocals are great on it.
5. Modern Love (LD). I think this is probably Bowie's most immediately catchy song. Great drum beat and awesome vocals.
6. Rebel Rebel (DD). Iconic guitar riff and presages the Replacements' "Androgynous" with it's lyrics.
7. Blue Jean (Tonight). The pillar of greatness on an otherwise meh album.
8. Boys Keep Swinging (Lodger). Catchy number with Bowie tackling gender politics. Also, there's a mind-bending guitar solo from Adrien Belew.
9. Panic in Detroit (AS). I always loved the tribal beat on this. Apparently, Iggy Pop's stories of the 1967 Detroit Riots inspired the song.
10. Station to Station (STS). It's not the side effects of the cocaine, I'm thinking that it must be love. Fresh off a bell pepper and a tall glass of milk, Bowie churns out another masterpiece.
*HMs are honestly too numerous to count, but here's an extra 10.*

44. African Night Flight
45. Let's Dance
46. Young Americans
47. Fame
48. Fashion
49. Beauty and the Beast
50. The Width of a Circle
For most of my life Rebel Rebel was my favorite song from anyone, anywhere (1975-2010). In the last few years it has slid down my list due to overexposure. It felt odd leaving it off, but there are about 30 songs for which I could say the same thing.
@@markgatica12 I get what you're saying. There's a lot of Bowie tunes that I've just heard too many times. "Young Americans" kind of fits that bill for me. It's a good song, I've just heard it too many times. "Space Oddity" too.
I would agree that it's impossible to come up with a Bowie top 10. I basically capitulated.
@@179rich I think you could just randomly generate 10 Bowie songs, and unless it ended up being the segues from Outside and the covers from Tonight, it would be pretty decent.
Superb entry EdG. Really thorough. Great songs, and nice summary of your reasoning - I enjoyed

Dang that was a tough list. Probably half would change if I did a list tomorrow. Some songs didn't make my list because overexposure over time has diminished their impact (Space Oddity, Changes, and Heroes are prime examples) although they are amazing songs. I watched the whole album ranking video which was a marathon, but an enjoyable one. You guys have covered most of my favorites at this point. A Kinks ranking is the last of the epic dinosaurs you have yet to tackle unless you did it and it slipped by me. Hope it's in the queue.
All great choices! My list:
10 NO CONTROL
9 QUICKSAND
8 BREAKING GLASS
7 THE JEAN GENIE
6 CHINA GIRL

The One & Only David Bowie -
I thought I could fit I’m Afraid Of Americans
But it didn’t make it .. the music video is so 90s it almost hurts 😆 Down to David & Trent’s matching facial hair
My Top 10:
1. I’m Deranged (The perfect combination of everything Bowie - the lyrics, vocals and piano parts over the electronic beats) Also, Lost Highway really got under my skin and this is featured on the soundtrack. Thankful to have seen it on the big screen.
2. Suffragette City
3. John, I’m Only Dancing
4. Heroes
5. The Hearts Filthy Lesson
6. Breaking Glass
7. Space Oddity
8. Girl Loves Me (Poignant F bombs)
9. Queen Bitch
10. I Would Be Your Slave (Heathen is my favorite album cover)
If you haven’t heard these songs, please check them out - Bowie’s vocals add a lot of Magic:
1. Without You I’m Nothing (feat. Bowie) - Placebo (Tick - Tock - Tick)
2. American Landfill (feat. Bowie) - Kristeen Young
P.S. - I could feel the passion in yesterday’s
Video - it was amazing! Hosts & Participants Alike - I hope y’all know what a special thing this channel is.. I appreciate everyone’s insights so much

8. Young Americans
7. Strangers When We Meet
6. Ashes to Ashes
5. Lazarus
4. Word on a Wing
3. Five Years
2. Life on Mars?
1. Time
I have to give a shoutout also to the Love is Lost remix on the Lost Plan EP, a huge improvement on the original song I think, and an honourable mention to Width of a Circle, Rock N Roll Suicide, Changes, Sound and Vision, and Teenage Wildlife - I wanted to pick only one song per album.
Hey guys!
This was so difficult but after a lot of fine-tuning here are my top 10 Bowie songs…
1) Drive-in Saturday
2) Moonage Daydream
3) Lady Grinning Soul
4) Suffragette City
5) Five Years
6) Fashion

So tough yet so easy, the Titles just keep coming. The Songs and "the Boys keep Swinging".
With Joe's love of "It's No Game," no one can accuse him of never going for "out there" music.
Kudos to Joe for letting his freak flag fly this week, by showing some love for Scary Monsters and "It's No Game". Next thing you know, he'll be listening to TV on the Radio and the Modern Lovers.

10 Five Years ....9 Panic in Detroit....8 Space Oddity....7 Station to Station......
6 Life on Mars....5 Moonage Daydream.....4 Sound and Vision....3 Win.....2 Alladin Sane....1 Ashes to Ashes
I'll just mention one song I didn't see in any lists - All The Madmen. In my opinion up there with his best.
10. Panic in Detroit - Such an amazing riff and some great Bowie lyrics
9. Queen Bitch - Campy, glam fun. Kicks so much ass
8. Cat People - Inglorious Basterds helped, but the SRV solo and one of my favorite Bowie vocals ever. Great energy
7. Sound and Vision - Everything Jason said and more.
6. Lady Grinning Soul - The menacing piano line and the ghostly vocals from Bowie are amazing , but mick ronsons guitar lines on it seal the deal.
5. Young American’s - such a great groove, great performance and overall just one of the coolest songs ever recorded.
4. Five Years - The start to one of the greatest albums ever made and sets the tone perfectly. Just absolutely beautiful.
3. Rebel, Rebel - Up there with Satisfaction for one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written.
2. Modern Love - such a fun vibe and never fails to make anybody smile or dance or sing along. The sax coming in a little bit in is just tremendous.
1. Heroes - The closest that any song has ever come to pure perfection. Everything about it is constructed to absolute perfection, while simultaneously showing incredible emotion from Bowie’s vocals. It’s simple and complex, happy and sad, Phil Spector pop and experimental all at the same time. Just beautiful
This is the hardest top ten I’ve ever had to compile cause he has so many incredible songs that have changed music. One of the greatest artists ever.
Not possible to choose a top ten Bowie songs so I will choose the top ten songs that affected or changed me when I first heard them.
Starman - watching David put his arm around Mick Ronson on Top of the Pops , so homoerotic it shocked my parents. Which was great.
Life on Mars? - played it over and over again. Took me to another place.
Drive in Saturday - Ziggy watching vids, trying to procreate? Nothing else sounded like it.
Jean Genie - Ziggy plays the blues.
All the young dudes - He gave this song to Mott, who would do that now? Bowies version is also stunning.
Always crashing in the same car - surreal and evocative. All those machine like sounds and bowies voice.
Heroes - The ultimate Bowie in Berlin, blew me away.
Ashes to Ashes - Bowie returned to his best. Classic accompanying video.
Let’s Dance - I must have hummed this song more months. Stunning.
Blackstar - He died, I cried. But he left this masterpiece as a gift.

All great lists - there really are no wrong answers here with such a strong catalog, are there. My favorite Bowie song - the one that has always haunted me most, is "The Bewlay Brothers" But how could you be disappointed here? Also "Rock and Roll Suicide." It is Bowies' range WITHIN A SINGLE SONG that you get more from Bowie than possibly anyone. His loss only gets bigger - because you never knew where his genius would take him next.
One of the best weeks in awhile guys.

@@catsofsherman1316 I felt weird about doing that but it's my favorite off the album so I had to.
Man, that is tough. Here's my top ten...
10. 1984

Great lists guys, all three. If I had to pick one, I would probably say Jason barely edges out Joe, and Kram is slightly behind. Kram gets the bonus points with Lazarus. But really, there are no wrong answers here. My list:

2. Station to Station
3. The Next Day
4. It's No Game Pt. 1
5. Absolute Beginners
6. Five Years
7. Stay
8. Beauty and the Beast
9. Lady Stardust
10. Time
10.5 Cracked Actor
My list has no hits, but that's OK. I have heard those songs enough times in my life. These songs represent what I am listening to now, from my two favorite playlists totaling around 60 songs. Like I said already, there are really no wrong answers here. Great week, looking forward to side 3.
Glad to see Teenage Wildlife getting the love :)

1 You Feel So Lonely You Could Die The Next Day🏆 the lyrical imagery alone is breathtaking, so powerful and almost prophetic. But it's the sheer grim heartfelt emotion in there from Bowie. That doesn't happen very often and when it does like this....❤️🔥🖤🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🎸🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯👌❤️🔥🙅🤠

If you ever run out of ideas for a side three, in yesterday's video, Joe mentioned how he was turned off by the cover of "Reality". You could do worst album covers, best album covers, most deceptive album covers, etc. Just trying to help you out!!
I think the cover of "The Next Day" was his worst, in my opinion. I mean, they literally just took the cover of "Heroes" and put a giant sticker with "The Next Day" written on it over Bowie's face.
@@gemini2012100 I didn't mean just Bowie album covers, I meant all album covers in music, but Bowie does have plenty to choose from himself!!
@@adamhasideas6813 I agree.
@@adamhasideas6813 I do like your idea about best album covers, worst album covers, etc.
Life on Mars? ★ Moonage Daydream ★ Lady Grinning Soul ★ Word on a Wing ★ Ashes to Ashes ★ Lady Stardust ★ Rock 'n' Roll Suicide ★ Who Can I Be Now? ★ Look Back in Anger ★ Queen Bitch
Ask me again in an hour...
There are too many songs to choose from, so I'm going to list songs or alternate versions of songs I think more people should hear. Bring Me the Disco King (Loner Mix) with Maynard James Keenan from the Underworld soundtrack, I'm Afraid Of Americans V1, The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Trent Reznor Alternative Mix), The Laughing Gnome and Liza Jane by Davie Jones & The King Bees. They are all searchable and worth the find.
Very sympatico with Jason’s list! Must be at least 8 of my own top 10, (Heroes, Aladdin Sane should be in there) which is amazing given the number of great songs in Bowie’s catalogue. Looking forward to my TLM merch-should arrive by the end of the month!
Can't do a list.
Sorry, too many songs.
I ❤️ David Bowie.
Which day do I want to hear a random David Bowie song??
Always.
Great interesting stuff.
No one is bored.
5. Queen Bitch- ridiculous chord strumming hook
4. TVC15- songwriting genius
3. Cracked Actor- Les Paul & Marshall sonic clinic
2. Aladdin Sane- haunting piano playing that rivals top prog performers
1. Stay- melody and chord combo that's so unique, smart funk/disco perhaps?
Beautiful list, there are too many-
There are later Bowie tunes that were excellent (90s +)…but what would you leave out? All three lists were filled with classics.
Not a big Bowie fan, think it comes down to being more of a singles listener. I sure do love his singles though:
