Just discovered your channel, looking forward to following its progress as I was born and brought up in Stafford, though my spotting days at the station were the rail blue to the intercity livery transition days of the late 70’s to late 80’s.👍
Thanks for watching. I nearly modelled the late 80s but the variety of stock and liveries required was enormous. I'm a Wolverhampton lad originally, but Stafford station was always far more interesting!
Great video. I think its was the September 92 tt change that saw the 0825 & 1225 Euston - Glasgows with the motorail vans, remember seeing the 1225 with the vans behind the locomotive. It was a fairly short lived thing. With the TDM the main problems where the 87's , InterCity wouldnt authorise the modifications to the transformers at a cost of £30k per loco resulting in the unreliability , for a short time to cut maintenance bills 87001-010 where put in a different pool & dedicated to the sleepers / limited to 100mph, they saw use on the EBW sets but it proved impractical to keep them off the mk3a/b sets. The summer 1993 tt with the decelerated timings saw the 1550 Euston-Carlisle/ Glasgow (FO) with a ebw set, the sheer amount of stops on the 3hr + run to Preston i think making it better to rediagram a mk3 set elsewhere,( the previous summers 1525 Euston -Glasgow being mk3's the run north of Preston being one of the fastest on a sub 2hr 30min timing) the 1600 Euston-Manchester (Manchester Pullman) overtaking the 1550 at Rugby The 1125 Euston-Glasgow / Edinburgh had a ebw set, again a short lived service that provided a 1700-Glasgow -Edinburgh service to fill the gap between the 1600 & 1800 IC225 services from Glasgow - Edinburgh. The sandwich of the guvs on the southbound runs was always interesting, i remember getting some extra lima guvs repainted to suit when they introduced the services , the Lima 87's i had i had fitted sprung oleos & sprung romford screw link couplings so you could use the screw links to attach to the ones fiited to the guv , it made for a great train consist with the Jouef mk3a's & MTK dvt kit. Always thought it was amusing with Railfreight with the 90/1's that they took off the buffing plates , but still retained the UIC 100 cables to work with the mk4's , i think InterCity did offer 2 class 86/2's in exchange for 1 class 90 , Railfreight not keen on relinquishing its class 90 fleet for 86/2's Its a shame Hornby wont get the dvt issued with the class 90 style buffers, buffing plates & the white valance. With the Oxfords its odd why they never produced the RFM's converted from 3a FO's, the mk3b FO's telephone window , the mk3b BFO with the built in tail lights & the couple of TSO's converted with a disabled toilet that where always next to the RFM. So annoying why everything is always half a job with coaching stock. The summer 1987 tt saw the 0740 BNS-Eus added as the Birmingham Pullman with the mk1 bg took off & a mk3b bfo added, that then formed the 0945 Euston-Glasgow C Royal Scot, made a for far more clean look of a train formation. The Birmingham olympic bid in 1986 they ran a special that featured a short set of 2 x FO / TRFB / 1 x FO / BFO with 87023 Velocity at the helm. It was god fun modelling the ICWC stuff, big challenge back in the early 90's due to the lack of rtr gear. I do find the Oxford 3a's a bit odd , probably because ive been running the Jouefs for far to long, i think a repaint with Howes Falcon Grey - Executive light grey would work wonders on them, shame nobody has perfected the tiny alluminium strip on the frame of the windows. Once again a great vid a nice trip back in time. Out of all the trips ive ever done the innaugaral 1025 Euston Glasgow C 'Royal Scot' on its flagship 4hr 43min run on 14 May 1990 with 90011 Chartered Institute of Transport at the helm still stands out , the non stop belt to Preston just a truly barnstorming run, let alone the battle with the elements on the run to Glasgow. Just terrific locomotives that where always more than just a box on wheels that so many enthusiasts derided at the time
Great input, and thanks for the feedback. That's really interesting about the 87 / DVT issue. I'd also read that locos were always switched to the front southbound during snowy weather as the aerodynamic effects of the train would have lead to snow / ice build up in the locos vents if it ran on the rear - is that true? There's a video on here at Stafford in Jan 96 which seems to back that up. I meant to mention it in this video, but forgot! Do you also know when the so-called Super Pullman formations stopped running (TSO x4, RFM, FO, FO, RFM, FO, BFO, DVT)? The last one I can see in a RUclips video is 1990/91 I think. It's a good train to model and I could Rule 1 it, but I like to be realistic. My Oxfords will all get a repaint - I agree, it's frustrating these models never seem to come out perfect! - I'll do my best on them. I've learned recently that all of their TSO seating is wrong too (should be far more 'airline' seating than tabled bays) and now I can't unsee it! I've been in touch with a company called FK3D who are looking at correct seating for me 🤞That's a future project though. Thanks again for contributing - much appreciated. Cheers Rich
@@WaltononTrent No worries. On my trips between home & uni in London i did a fair bit of mileage with . I remember one wintry trip from Piccadilly that had 87005 towing the set south diverted via the Styal line for engineering work. Can get the number of towed southbound trips on one hand , but they where always in the snowy conditions. When Birmingham City reached the Leyland Daf trophy final at Wembley, in 1991 some of the ebw sets had the dvt / firsts taken off & 86/2's top n tailed the formations on the specials they ran from Wembley Central up to Birmingham. The super pullmans. They had some formations over the years. How the staff in the mk1 kitchen car coped with the 110mph running on the b5's always got me. The last incarnation i saw in about February 91 at Piccadilly was on the 0800 from Euston which had the flagship 2hr 23min run north, that said 87016 had arrived that morning at 1017, must have got the gun at Stockport for the early arrival, that had the 4 TSO's, Rfm, 2 FO Rfm FO BFO DVT, i think 2 sets had the bfo , the other bfo spare. I dont think they got beyond the winter 91 timetable change , maybe survived up to the summer 92 they where most notable for being used on summer Saturdays with pairs of 31's on the Rose Grove -Paignton intercity holidaymaker services.& then one service up from Milton Keynes The Saturday 0705 Piccadilly - Euston being a standard set. When i first got the Hornby mk4's back in November 1990 i did one set as one of the Yorkshire Pullman formations & i think the IC225 pair soon got reformed into the more standardised 5 standards / Restuarant / 3 firsts / dvt, For the 2 main loaded runs they where ideal but the off peak trips it was a bit excessive. They are good to model , i think given where we are its nice to have a more easy going approach to modelling , i used to be a true pedant with it , real time railway modelling does that , whereas with nostalgia mixing it up a bit adds to the fun of the snapshot of the era. With my Virgin & intercity mk3 sets i have the bfos & i dont bother with the dvt anymore, my Bratchells IC DVT got damaged in a house move & i jist couldnt be bothered buying Hornby one to have to repaint it to match my jouefs . My Virgin set is based on what was happening as the TDM issues got so bad Virgin had the dvt's shifted off 3 sets & the bfo's on & then put on Euston-Glasgow diagrams to try & mitigate the problems. One on YT vid one of the sets hauled by 87020 belts through Stafford, i think a photo in a Rail magazine issue showed 90013 heading south with one set .The bfo's when first built where put on the Clansman sets (superb photo on a FB group of 87101 heading the southbound run just before it was seconded by the RTC for the tdm trials - moved to Hornsey depot) then on the Birmingham Pullman / Royal Scot & then by the summer 89 timetable which saw the introduction of the fixed formation sets theyd migrated to the Manchester / Merseyside & Lancashire pullmans. I know what you mean with the seats, the old Hornby APT-P was a godsend as Hornby at Margate would glady sell spares of the interiors , superb for fitting in the mk3s & the first class seats where almost identical to what was in the mk3b FO / BFO's & they fitted really well in the Jouefs & Limas. When i brought in 2 new sets of Jouefs to replace the Limas theyd stopped doing the APT-P spares. 3 d printing is the way forward, Michael Lomax whose on Instagram did a rework of the Hornby mk4's interiors to suit the Grand central sets as a 3d print. Looked superb.
Thanks. Yes, eventually, and some weathering. There’s a lot of work to do on all my rolling stock but my efforts are going into building up the layout at the moment. Lots to do! Cheers Rich
Fantastic update, great progress on the station platforms, just a thought about the gap, have you considered some sort of aiko (not sure how you spell it) drain where it will still be visible ? Lovely sets of mk3’s and AC traction , thanks for sharing , cheers Darrell
Thanks Darrell. Funnily enough, that's exactly what I'm going to do! Since uploading the video, I've filled it in with an all-purpose filler and it now looks a lot like a scale-depth drainage channel. I'm about to head into the loft and do some work on it this afternoon and I'll put it in the November update. Thanks for the support. Cheers Rich
HEAD AND TAIL LIGHT RULES. Loco lighting. It is against the rules to show head or tail lights between vehicles ! Headlights must only be at the front of the train, and tail lights at the rear of the train. Any intermediate lights left on, implies a collision has occurred between two trains, and requires a "stop and examine" order. (A signalman MUST put the signals to danger and STOP such a train).
