- Self-proclaimed steak experts will warn you to never ask for sauce when you order a $50 cut at the local steakhouse. And the waiter may give you a nasty look, too. But they can't have any say over what you do in the privacy of your home. So if you like to add a little glug of garlicky, vinegary flavor to your steak, that's your call.
But which one to choose? In the 20th Century, it often seemed like A.1. and Heinz 57 were the only choices. But it's not like that today. Bottles from famous steakhouses and store brands abound, and even A.1. has multiple varieties. And like anything else, some are far better than others. Here are some of the top store-bought steak sauce labels, ranked from worst to best.

What's your favorite steak sauce?
Pickapeppa steak sauce
A1
My favorite is "pepper farm" hot sauce. The black label version. It's the most universal condiment I have ever seen.
Chimichurri
Peter Luger #1!!!
My favorite was discontinued at least 20 years ago. It was Crosse & Blackwell Savory Sauce. When I could no longer find it at my supermarket, I contacted the British company and they sent me a case of 12 bottles free of charge. When I’d used that up, there was no more. The company still exists but there isn’t anything on the internet to suggest that it ever existed.
I was devastated when Crosse & Blackwell stopped making their steak sauce. IIRC, it was made with malt vinegar which gave it a wonderful flavor not found in most American sauces
@@hgman3920 What is you brit's and malt vinegar?
Unilever aquired them in the early 1990’s and shelved the recipes.
A1 steak sauce yes
When I was a kid & we had that rare steak night, I would check the cupboard for a bottle of A-1. If none was found I would hop in the pinto to head for a fresh bottle down at the corner store
Steak sauce was a must for us growing up because my parents didn't know how to cook steak for most of my childhood. Our choice was Lea & Perrins, by far. Nothing else compares. Although I almost never use a sauce these days because I know how to cook a steak now, I still love that sauce.
It's a shame it's impossible to find now.
I agree. Lea & Perrins regular, not the bold, is my favorite too when a steak sauce has to be used, great on eggs :-)
it could be your parents , like mine, did not really have access to expensive cuts.
I miss that sauce. I remember my parents and grandparents swore by A-1 origianal. I remember trying L&P to be different. It was awesome and I swore by it. Suddenly it waa gone. It should be brought back.
@@patrickchilds9620 nah at that time we were doing well. Had our own business. They just really didn't know how to cook certain things, and they openly admit it.
@@seanswinton6242 yep we used to find it all over in the stores when I was young and then it disappeared. So we started getting it on Amazon. And now you can't get it there most of the time, and when you can the price is obscene. I guess it must have been discontinued. Just like everything good. It's a shame A1 ass funk sauce became so popular, but what can you do. The majority of the consumer base has no taste or standards.
I have been experimenting with a replacement using a base of Worcestershire sauce that's been reduced by half, raisin paste, vinegar, brown sugar, and a few other ingredients. Work in progress but promising and very good.
Country Bob's steak sauce should've made this list.
I absolutely agree and I was going to say the same thing.
Heinz 57 and Dijon mustard works great with roast beef and cheddar sandwiches, which is my go to lunch sandwich.
Lea & Perrins regular steak sauce is my favorite. Hard to find though.
That's what I was thinking. I haven't seen it in a long time. I liked it. Nowadays I no longer use these on steaks. Mostly on burgers. It would be nostalgic to try it again.
You can order Lea & Perrin’s steak sauce from Amazon.
Pickapeppa. Not technically a steak sauce, but fantastic on steak. But with a good steak, I just prefer a bit of straight horseradish.
You have to try Country Bob's it's like A1 but better. I like 57 until I tried Bob's. It makes every thing better.
A1 steak sauce is almost irresistible to me.👍 I also really enjoy Lea and Perrins and Heinz 57. Also, I miss green Tabasco sauce... it was a favorite of mine.
Love me some Pickapeppa. Mmmm good! Similar to A1 but definitely a step up.
Love Heinz 57!
Great value>A1?!?!? Who was high af writing this?
Even though it said ranked worst to best, I felt like they randomly put everything in. The tabasco A1 being higher than regular A1 confused me even though I agree it is...not everyone looks for that. Maybe the added points for great value's cheap price? Even though I thought the video was about the best.
Heinz 57, best- A1 close second 😉
I hate steak snobs. Just because someone likes putting steak sauce on their steak doesn't mean anything other than they think it tastes good. The only thing it hurts is the overly sensitive ego of the cook.
Ok, hear me out. Grilled cheese dipped in a little bit of A1 is a nice and little known combo.
I like A1 and Heinz 57 sauce 😀
I have been mixing them both together in equal amounts since I was a kid and it seems to make the perfect combination of the tart and vinegar-yness of the A-1 and the delectable perfect sweetness of the 57 Sauce! I have times though when I opt for "Hidden Valley Ranch " salad dressing( the best is self made with mayo, seasoning envelope and buttermilk at home- to die for on EVERYTHING from fried potatoes to Chicken strips....Then at other times I just love to dip my meat bites (and baguette bread!) into the lucious olive oil dressing on an authentic Greek salad..complete with heavenly feta cheese ,kalamata olives ,cucumbers, onions & tomatoes that has marinated in the fridge well ! They teach you how to eat way to many amazing things if you grow up in Greece! And don't get me even started about tzaziki made the village way- fresh ,cool and a gift to your mouth! And let's not forget about the magic that happens when you spoon some good homemade guacamole on a bite of steak as well!!! Just watch your waistline, these can all pack on the pounds before you know it!!!
@@kimberlypatton9634 Tasty 😋
Loved the video. My fave is A1 Original, but not just for steaks. I love it on eggs, hash browns, & french fries
Excellent taste.
Baked potatoes ✌️
Eggs and french fries....I'm done.
If you need a steak sauce, you’re in the wrong place
I'd much rather make a real pan sauce like a bordelaise, or a chimichurri, or if I want to go a different route, a bernaise, but that's vastly different than these bottled manufactured concoctions.
this is for when you're stoned out of your gourd on jazz cabbage and just wanna senselessly shove food down your fat gullet and call it a night. and its much cheaper than making a proper red wine, peppercorn, or cream of mushroom sauce
A perfectly cooked steak (medium-rare to medium, cut depending) should never need any kind of a sauce, aside from a compound butter. I use store-bought sauces as marinades or a base for bbq or grilling sauce for pork or chicken.
Deglaze the pan and make that the sauce, always.
👍
I use sauce cause I’m my own person and can decide what I like not what your opinion is
Almost everybody says this if they like stakes. Yes a stake can be good on its own but some of us like add on seasonings. I really like stake sauce.
If you make a steak medium rare or rare, you might as well as serve the steak raw!
I couldn’t imagine using Worcestershire Sauce direly on a steak, but often use it for marinades.
Heinz 57 is my go-to sauce, I’m still looking for a brown sauce I like as much.
Snce I have a brother that likes drowning food in sauce, I’ll have to have him ryhe A.1. Bold & Spicy.
I’m a New Yorker living in SC now and I love Peter Luger Steak Sauce. I grew up on Heinz 57 and I had PL steak sauce I was hooked. I order a case every 6 moths since this southern state does not carry the sauce. Peter Luger Steak Sauce is #1 in my house.
Dined at PL for the first time recently. A gravy boat of their sauce is put on the table with bread when you are seated. It is terrific and I want to try some with cooked shrimp. I was dipping bread in it. The steak didn't need anything but still interesting to have a bite with the sauce.
Love PL the secret is a little goes a long way.
Country Bob's is the best!
Stubbs beef marinade and mr yoshidas teriyaki glaze are my top 2. both very different from each other and incredibly good. i usually drizzle a little more over the top or on the side of the steak after i've finished cooking. both 10/10
A-1 is synonymous with my steak & has been my whole life.
I don't give a damn how high end the restaurant is, if I can't have A-1, I miss it.
I love A1 on a perfectly cooked thick cut ribeye!
Crosse and Blackwell was always my fave.
If you cook your steak at medium rare you do not need Steak sauce
A great chef like Mel Sharples recommending 57 sauce is good enough for me.
The best steak sauce is COUNTRY BOB’S
I never knew there were so many different types of steak sauces! I am so uncultured 🤣🤣🤣
@FEC Multimedia I agree. Using manufactured bottled steak sauces shows how uncultured one is in regards to great quality food.
A-1 for beef and beef stews, Heinz 57 for pork and chicken. Trust me and try them
Alas, I have been assimilated into my wife's Filipino eating habits. A little vinegar, a little soy sauce, and some chopped bird peppers make a perfect dipping sauce for steak.
I kinda like the sound of that
57, Lee Perrins and A1 are my favs!!
57 for me. But Worcestershire for pork, fried potatos, or greens
Primal Mayo is the reason to support the brand. Worth a try for keto or just the rich flavor.
Making pepper sauce or bernaise in the pan after cant be beaten. But i found veal fond mixed with ketjap sedang and some butter is also just so nice. Sweet lord its good cooking
I was surprised to see Essential Everyday on your list; I buy it at the local Redner's market to save on the higher price of A1. The two are nearly the same to me.
A1 on a burger is the best, I also put on cheesesteaks. Sometimes on steak depending on if the steak is not seasoned correctly or a cheap piece of meat.
A.1. The one and only steak sauce for me.
A-1!!! Always was, always will be.
Stonewall Kitchen Mesquite is the beat I've tried. Everyone who's tried it has bought some. Its like a sweet A1
HP sauce is nice on fries. However HP sauce is a little sweet. Now for a good Steak hands down is Kerrygold Irish Butter as your Steak Sauce. Ask any Professional Chef that using Butter for cooking your Steak will give it flavor and a nice sear.
I type this to you, with tears streaming down my face. Bring in the tomato plants.
Usually, a pad of compound better is fine
Heinz 5iddy7..
Fruity HP is the best imported from Holland.
heinz 57 when you're in the mood for that raisin flavor. worchestershire is tops!
The Peter Lugers steak sauce is actually delicious. I love the horseradish flavor it has
Super fire
the best i've tried is Brasswell's savory sirloin sauce.
Peter Luger steak sauce is used to compliment the steak. It's not like some steak sauce to cover up bad steak. A little of PL goes a long way to enhance to meat.
Hahahaha! This video is pretty comprehensive & thorough, but the title is a misnomer… it should’ve been more accurately titled, “Store Bought Steak Sauces ranked from worst to bad”. The main message seems to be - have the steak without sauce.
I love Lea & Perrin's worcheshire sauce!
I didn't know fhat Lea & Perrin's made steak sauce!
I'm surprised London Pub Steak & Chop sauce wasn't on this list. It's probably the most "balanced" Steak sauce I can think of
I actually like the Peter Luger's sauce, just not on the steak. It's great as a marinade, on chicken, and in the restaurant, a little on fries or german potatoes, and sometimes on bacon.
A quality steak properly cooked needs nothing more than salt, pepper, rosemary, garlic and butter.
Who were and how many tasters were there?
A1 Bold & Spicy
Prter luger steak sauce is bomb no way its last thay all ways have wack rankings
I had a roommate who put tabasco sauce on everything except his cereal. I wondered how his taste buds and his stomach survived!
There was A-1, Heinz , and Prime Choice Steak Sauce. That's all we had, All were good, But Prime Choice went away. The Store brands all have too much vinegar in them.
A1 original since i was a kid
Where's country bobs???
My girlfriend used steak sauce before we met, I usually purchase porterhouse, the first time I made us steaks she asked me for a-1, I looked at her and said no, you don't ruin a great steak with some store bought sauce, so she had to eat a steak with no a-1, after the meal she agreed that no sauce was needed, we've been together 12 years, still no steak sauce in our house.
A! has a strange, unpleasant bitter undernote
Peter Luger sauce is phenomenal
If you have to put steak sauce on steak then it was a crappy piece of meat. If it’s cooked medium rare you really don’t need the sauce. You want to taste the meat. Of course if you want it well done then I can see using steak sauce.🥩🥩🥩
I like the lea and perrins bold steak sauce
Only poorly cooked or cheap cuts should ever have a steak sauce!!
unless you like steak sauce.
Agree putting steak sauce on a good sauce is a waste of a good steak put it on a dollar steak or some potatoes chips
I like steak sauce tho so it’s cool, I’m probably just more open minded than you
I feel you but I put steak sauce on dry aged prime ribeye! Lol I just like it.
@@marcustoney7762 Oh man some people would pretty much think that's a crime.
The chef at the steakhouse where you're eating might be kinda insulted if he saw that.
In fact there are plenty of steakhouses that don't serve bottled sauces and they tend to be the ones that offer higher end steaks like Wagyu and aged steaks.
Hey I don't judge but y'all have to understand that with these dry ageing processes the Chef is trying to achieve a certain taste profile and meat consistency.
I personally don't like dry or wet aged steaks so I never order them.
I wouldn't put Heinz 57 on steak, but it's nice with chicken and on burgers.
Not sure why these steak sauces are mostly vinegary and sweet. Not exactly the flavor profile I look for in a steak
Just mix ketchup and Worcestershire. You'll thank me it's way cheaper.
Ummmm...who looks up steak sauce in the phone book?
A1 is rated higher than Lea & Perrins? Ugh! Personally, I think A1 tastes disgusting!
me too
No. Lea & Pertains steak sauce is the highest ranked sauce on this review
To each their own
Peter Lugars Steak Sauce is THEE BESTTTT!
I'll stick with A1 steak sauce or Heinz 57 if the spirit hits lol.
If I make a steak so poorly that I need sauce, I choose rum and coke.
Shulas 347 sauce 🥩 is ✅✅✅....
A 1.....sauce Sweet baby Rays......sauce. Heinz....... sauce
1) A1.
2) Burman's.
3) Heinz.
4) Great Value.
A steak should not need a sauce.
Delmonicos is great.
Delmonico's steak sauce best ever!!!
Why the hell would steaksauce be in the phonebook?!
Combining Lea & Perrins with Heinz Ketchup you will produce THE BEST steak sauce available even better than A-1. Surprised this steak sauce commentary doesn't mention this!
picapeppa from cajun grocers is the best hot sauce too
You forgot Masterpiece sauce my favorite
I just like a,,1 I don't care how good the steak is
I really like Burman’s sauce and use it all the time. It is good on hamburgers also. I also like the price which is very inexpensive.
What's wrong with Lowry's?
Who ever looked up steak sauce in a phone book?
Pickapeppa Sauce is good on steak.
HP sauce
STOP. Original A-1.....
Wow they rate Walmart Great Value over A1. Wow
No Sweet Baby Ray's or Stubbs? Lol
Why use steak sauce anyway. If the piece of steak is of good quality you don’t need to cover the taste of the meat
Don't listen to this...I could drink Peter Lugar sauce from the bottle...My fridge is never without it
Winco comes in a glass bottle and tastes just like A1 and cost $1
