I used to meet up with an elderly friend for a cigar on Sunday mornings around a fire pit. I was in charge of finding firewood. Normally looking behind businesses for abandoned pallets. Then I stumbled up The Holy Grail. A woodworking shop that did custom cabinetry (think kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers). I'd swing by and rummage through the barrel for great wood scraps, oak, maple, cherry, and grade A white pine. The back of my pickup truck filled with scraps, nothing bigger than 3'-4'. Like flies on crap old men would swarm my truck "you can't burn that!" "do you know how much that is?" One guy stuffing his garage with misc. trim pieces, another building birdhouses, another furniture repair/carpenter crying at my "mother load"

SHAME on that guy. Please don't stop being generous. Just put a strict policy in place, down to a cost for your time. If you load a pallet onto a truck, have a fee for the loading. Put your scrap on a pallet, and there are NO changes to the pallets. If someone wants large pieces, insist they have a dump truck, make rules for no cutting on property, or only allow them to cut their own in a particular spot. How about requiring a donation to a local shelter per pallet? We load the pallet for you, it takes 20 minutes, we charge $20 for loading, plus a $20 donation to the local soup kitchen. OR, sell a truckload as firewood....
Pennsylvania Prepper thanks for watching. We still give away wood. We’re just a little more careful about how we coordinate the donations. Most of the time people aren’t even aware of our labor and time issues. They just want the free stuff 😆
That's the kind of situation that can piss me off pretty strongly, although some part of it is on you because you didn't ask a couple of qualifying questions. Eg; "how much can you use"? "Our stuff will be on pallets, can you move pallets?" Can your borrowed truck handle pallets? Do you want to drop off some garbage bins and we'll fill them up for you and then you can just grab them? But yeah, your point is well taken. You are the one who is supposed to cull your yard for scraps...your best scraps, by the way. He's gonna borrow a truck. How is he going to load it? If he needs help, is he going supply it? A lot of people don't or won't or can't think out those supporting details, and all the slop falls onto you. Meanwhile, your yard, your operation is set up for and at least streamlined for the work you have to do on a routine basis to run an ongoing business, but for being a nice guy, you have the privilege of trashing your whole routine, spreading out the pallets you put together and cleaning up the detritus. It's actually very selfish, piggish on the part of the old guy...all that matters is him, what he wants, when he's able to do it, how he's able to do it, and you're just supposed to be there ready to do him his favor any old time he can swing by.
Fair points. In fairness, I’ve had a lot of really smooth interactions with people as well. Of course it’s the negative ones you remember (and make videos about!)
I have on a few occasions got free pallet runners and used those for projects. I just ask the guy at Lowe's can I have these when they have some in a cart. I actually save them the time of putting them in the dumpster. I know its not the best wood but.... I do a lot of more rustic stuff.

If you're a businessman, you get it. All good points. A good rule of thumb when doing any "side deal" with someone inside a larger operation is to keep low and thank the person you're dealing with in private. Don't go into a warehouse and load up a pile of stuff, making a big deal about how nice "you all are" - "giving me all this free stuff". Odds are pretty good a lot of the people there would like to take some of that stuff home and company policy prevents it. This is true even for scrap metal and what is considered "trash".or "firewood". Pick up your stuff as if it's an order, don't discuss money and do it like you're on the clock load it, sign the paperwork and leave. Make it "just another pickup" and get out. Thank your connection on the phone or in private later, he will appreciate it as well. This is a great video, and is so dead on the money. I've seen it all happen myself, on both sides of the deal. I ran a small industrial controls business, and was often gifted stuff on the QT that management wanted to disappear. I saw a person get fired for scrapping out mis-machined hydraulic manifolds that he was specifically told to put in the dumpster, and he was fired over it (justifably). Turns out the manifolds were a proprietary design and there was a written contract specifying security measures. Do exactly what your contact says, he may not explain himself, but if you take care of him, he will be able to take care of you.

Very interesting and great advice, nice video. I helped out at a surplus store years back. Every damn time they tried to donate boots, gloves, toques, etc. to homeless and well anyone who asked for free gear with a sad story a similar situation to what you mentioned would happen. We would take them back and they would piss and moan and demand hundreds of dollars in brand new gear for free...the second hand, clean, warm gear we were offering for FREE wasn't good enough for them. It's because of all of the times people would do that the store no longer donates free gear. If I were down and out and I was offered warm boots I'd take them, it gets colder than -40 here in the winter.
