What is the science behind the pen cap with clay going up and down

This is just a strong guess:
You press the bottle, but the water can't be compress, only the air inside the cap. At some point the the compressed air will become so dense that it wil be too heavy to lift the weight attached to the pen cap, so it will sink. When the pressure decreases, it will float again.
Or something like this... I'm neither a scientist, nor a native speaker.
