A car company not always associated as a performance brand in the United States is Volvo. Volvo is typically known for it's comfortable interiors and incredibly sage vehicles. However one car that always slipped away from my attention was the Volvo C30 which was equipped with the same 5 cylinder motor as the Ford Focus RS in Europe shared! The C30 wasn't as quick as the Focus RS, but in theory this was the closest vehicle in America to the European brother. They shared the same platform, suspension setup, and much more. Also unfortunately known as the "car from twilight" the car didn't have the best reputation since it was driven by a sparkling vampire. So after all these years did we completely miss this Focus RS in disguise? Let's drive it and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!

As a c30 owner. Im appalled that youve brought it into the limelight and i request this video be taken down please. Id like to keep my secrets secret
As one looking to buy a c30, i agree. I can't afford it if the prices go up.
The first time i was behind one in traffic, i loved it. Wanted one ever since.

Yes please don't let the price go up; I want to own the baby viper
And the price range of +/- 5,000 is perfect for it to be an "affordable" fun car

Thank you for bumping the resale value of my c30.
But also fuck him for bumping the used purchase price 😂
@@matt25675 For real, in my Asian country, before Volvo came out with the new XC90, used car prices for a lot of Volvo's tanked hard after just 3 years. Now, many newer ones kinda retain resale value. Its only now getting back to how it was before.
For example, 2 years ago, my family was shopping for a 2013- 15 V40 T5, and it cost about 20k USD used at the time (third world country so these cars have inflated prices from the start). Now, even after the pandemic, we're still looking at around 17k for a the same spec car with similar mileage. Prices barely moved in the last 2 years
Still worth very little in the UK
How much did you sell it for? I bought mine for 6500 with a rebuilt title but fully built
@@austinstockton9221 haven't sold it but I bought it for 8k less than a year before this video with a clean title.

Yeah and you guys got them in manual too, their the true unicorns!

David briefly showed my 08 R on his channel, but I blew it up... I miss that car every day.
@@ThatDudeinBlue the v50 t5 is a wagon version of this car, and the s40 t5 is the sedan. there are r pace versions of all 3 i believe. they all have halidex 2 rear diffs and with a tune really wake up to 300-400hp very easily. they all have big k24turbos from the factory, as well as controllable vvt. amazing cars. like all good euros cheap now but good luck finding one in 10 years. we in the volvo world already know its getting real hard to find good 850s, s70s, 740s, just to name a few.

I’ve had two of these. They are so fun, fast and unique. You have to review one with the M66 manual trans. Preferably one with an upgraded transmission torque mount that makes for smoother shifts.
ruclips.net/video/mmbCCAGBhUI/видео.html
Volvos are like the hidden gem of the car community. I have owned 13 Volvos over the years an its addictive. Here in Europe we also got a Diesel version of this engine. Makes 210hp and 460nm with a tune and gets 50-60 mpg in the Volvo V70.
My civic has 210 factory
No one’s here for a civic
Is the car good? Any issues with the engine or transmission?
@@sopretty43vr Yeah, but is it a diesel?
Oh, the mighty 5 cylinder ! The best sound by far (when you're talking less than 8 cylinders), for the least amount of fuel and the smallest taxes here in europe (where you pay taxes according to your displacement). The 5 cylinder is like the hero we got but we didn't appreciate. There is no engine smaller than 3.0 liter tahat makes me say ""Dayum!"" every time i hear a nice exhaust on one, i wish i could afford one.
Get the St my god.... You will not regret it £2500 up
I dunno, I think the three most orgasmic sounding engines are the 20B Mazda 3-rotor, the VW VR6, and Audi's Quattro S1 Turbo I5. All tied for each other. Close second to that is the Nissan RB series and of course that VTEC Kseries or F20C.
You're not biased at all ...
I like inline sixes.

Thanks for very good review. The T5 is really fun and great engine. For pre owned buyers be aware that the PCV rubber valve could fail around 50-80 K miles and cause crankcase pressure to blow one or more camshaft seals out with oil leak. RUclips vids that cover that. The rear sway bar rubber bumpers / end links will wear. Premium sound system is nice.
Good point because mine is showing "Engine System Service Urgent" warning!

11:30 I got one of these as my first car about a year ago and have been loving it, I felt exactly the same, didn’t want a gti or focus or fiesta, I wanted something different and I really do think I made the right choice

Cool to see this! I just picked up a 2009 C30 R-design, in awesome condition, for a little over $6k. Absolutely love it. It’s a completely different animal from my Mazdaspeed 3.
Would you say it's better or worse than the speed3?
Crazy thing is that despite how different your C30 and your Speed3 are, they are actually chassis buddies. C30 is on Volvos P1 chassis which Ford stole for their global C platform which your 3 is on :)

V50 with 2.5t awd manual is one of my "dream" cars.
Ville Piirainen i’ve owned a V50 t5 awd manual but i sold it to a friend. It’s a awsome car, mine had 380000km and I didn’t have any issues with it. Mine was almost fully equiped. I realy recomend it super fun, practical and it’s a lot of car for the money.
@@alfredpalsson Nice to hear. I have experiences with 2.5t (ford mondeo mk4), but the transmission was pretty weak. Had it 140k km and sold it 270k km. I have to find out if volvo uses same one. But engine it self seems to be pretty durable.
@@R3v3rs3entry I believe it is a different trans (it uses the Getrag M66). I love my V50 T5 FWD manual. It is a lot of fun to drive on back roads, has lots of space, easy to park, and really comfy for long trips. It also sounds amazing with an exhaust. Love these cars! Have had no reliability problems over the 20k miles I have owned mine. Nothing but fun. I also think the engine in the Mondeo is slightly different than the Volvo B5254T3/7. The engine is lovely, the gearbox is nice and smooth, and it is overall a great car to live with.

I have a V50 T5 AWD 6 speeds. Will never sell it.
I had an S40 with 305000km. It cracked a piston in half and the bearings were knocked but it carried on driving for a year in that condition. These cars are amazing
This actually is my first car and I love it to death, I have the post-facelift (2011-13) and it is a blast to drive and is very unique, in fact it was the only one for sale in my state at the time I bought it.

My wife has a stock C30. It's weird, but we love it. My only criticism is the steering: Not much feel when you're in the twisties. Otherwise, just like you said, it's a really good do-it-all car!
Hey man. I got my Focus Mk2 St because of the sound of this car my friend has. It's thirsty, everyday. And yes a Catback with tips makes her sound even more baby V10 vibes
Great car. I had an '09 with a manual and loved it. I only sold it because I needed more space for my son. And squishy brakes is just a Volvo thing.
Haha. Yeah. The brakes are my biggest complaint about my '09 as well. Thinking about upgrading to some larger Brembos or something. Thankfully there are TONS of upgrades out there for these. :)
Please do more 5cyl! Try to find an old 300D, the most fun you'll have doing 30mph
I was in a wreck driving this car. A car going about 70 in a 40 hit me on the driver's side without braking when I was merging into traffic. I can confirm from 1st hand experience the side airbags work well. No injuries :) I drive an S60 inscription now but I do miss the C30. C30 is a great 1st car, especially for the price. It was my 1st car $9k used back in 2013 with 50k miles.
I just got my 2012 c30 last spring. amazing deal 47k miles 6 speed for 12.5k been really enjoying it so far. Mods are coming very soon with tax returns and i am very excited. just a tune for this car will get almost 35hp and 50lbs of torque with no bolt ons. great little review im glad people appreciate this car its unique and i think very good looking. Only complaint with the bone stock car is the rear wheel game is massive.

This was my first car, I got mine about 5 months ago. It has an intake, cat-back, lowering springs, and some really dark tints. It's a manual and insurance is super cheap for it. I was looking at civic si's and focus st's, but the insurance was like 4.5k per year. Overall, very fun car!
Bought one of these in 2018 as my first car, still have, still runs great. Love it
Finally some love for the C30 ❤️ I love mine!
Whenever I race people in my s40, I always beat people off the line but lose them in the top end, but that’s just what it’s made for so I can’t complain
due to the small turbo design. Volvo gave the car a small quick spooling turbo to make the car better for daily driving and more torquey. I currently have a 50 trim turbo on my enigne im about to drop in designed for mid to higher Rpms. Boost wont hit till like 3,700pms
i was always in love with these cars. as soon as i saw one i fell in love and looked every where to find one for sale but they are rare and hard to find where i lived

Broken down? Mine has "Engine System Service Urgent" warning on it!
How the hell did you get 650 horsepower out of a P1 engine? Damn bro! That thing must be BUILT. Those are the same (or similar) block to the infamous 2.5 in the R right?
Not sure why your video not popping In My sub box. I clicked the bell now, so we should be good! Love your videos!
Had the opportunity to drive an S60R for a couple days. Very unique car, and sort of regret not buying it. With everything that car offered, and the smile it put on my face too. But repairs are costly. Especially the suspension, which are electronic Öhlins. The 5 cylinder engine sounds like the Quattro from group B. I loved hearing it. The S60R had 300 horsepower stock, one I drove was closer to 350. The craziest thing is how comfy it was.
Ever since I totalled my c30 I've been looking for a new one... but every T5 I find is either way overpriced, or has a very high mileage ... best car I've ever driven. Sticks too the road, sounds good, and looks amazing .. really miss it

Underrated by non car guys..
American logic:

Volvo T5 in an identical ford Focus-"pure bred racing machine, sounds like a Lambo, I would give my soul for one, must import"
you have to say, and i adore my c30 style, that it doesn't scream sport car as much as the 09' Rs does, probably why it has this reputation

I own a 6 speed S60. In love with the car. You are right about the sound, I've driven 3 V10s and these 5s are as close as it gets
Sad that the Volvo Petrol and Diesel 5 Cyl engines are no more. I've owned both (95 reg 850 for the petrol & 05 plate s60 d5) and love them both. Just such a wonderful balance between the eco of the 4 pots, and the feel of the 6.
it's essentially a focus ST with a volvo body
volvo never made a focus rs equivalent :(
What focus st do you know of that has an i-5?? Also look up the European Ford focus RS. There's a guy that reviews a 900hp rs that's blue if you want to know more about these cars as well
It's more of a detuned RS than an ST.
@@jessetudahl9605 in europe this volvo c30 is exactly the same underneath as the focus ST, the focus RS has a different 5cyl engine with stronger internals, the most powerful being the rs500 model with 345bhp, uk spec rhd models go for a shit ton upwards of 65k£ with low mileage

Didn't know that car existed 😂 cool review
My buddy has a white C30 and it’s the R Design. It looks really quirky but oddly good! He’s done a muffler delete and it sounds insane. If you can manage to find one of these cars in a manual, it’s a wonderful car to drive!
The engine as such, aka "white block" is derived from the 3.0L straight 6 cylinder aluminium engine Volvo made with help from Porsche, that was introduced in the 960.
So from the straight 6, Volvo then made the 5 and 4 cylinder engines.
Great video and nothing beats that sound from a Volvo 5 cylinder. 👍
I love the Volvo 5-cylinder it is “in my opinion THE BEST SOUNDING ENGINES”, but no way in hell would i be able to afford the fuel cost that I would have, if i had one.
I mean if you have any sole or passion for driving you just want to hear the 5-cylinder orchestra play.
By the way the Auto you have there is known as the AW-55, the 5 speed manual is called M56, the 6 speed is known as the M66 and was available in AWD and FWD from the 2008 Model year.
And then there is the Ford transmission that are all so fucking shit, that I don’t care or remember anything more than that the Ford “auto” is known as the power shit.
The P1! Platform as it is known in the Volvo community had a few engines to choose from.
1.6 , 1.8, 2.0 was “ohh... fuck it has blown again” Ford engines (exhaust mounted on left side) (what ever shit or Power Shit transmission)
The 1.6D, D2 where both 1.6 liter Peugeot turbo diesels that made 109 to 115 Horsepower and 240 Nm (exhaust mounted on the left side hidden behind the bumper, except on the C30) (MTX75 or some 6 speed or Ford power shit transmissions).
The 2.0D “not another fucking” Ford 4-cylinder engine (exhaust mounted like the 1.6D and D2).
The 2.4’s where ether 140 or 170 Horsepower 220 to 230Nm 5-cylinder naturally aspirated engines. (Exhaust on right side) (M56 or M66 or AW-55 transmissions)
T5 the top of the line petrol had 220 or 230Hk in the face 2 (double exhaust) (AW-55 or M66 with ether AWD except the C30 or in FWD face 2)
D3, D4, D5 which where 2.4 liter 5-cylinder turbo diesels, with the D5 having 185hk and 300Nm with the AW-55 and 400Nm with the M66) (one exhaust on etch side)
Edit: after looking in to it there have never been any M56 T5s so I removed it from the T5 section.
The fuel economy isn't too bad actually. I manage 31 Hwy MPG and 24 City MPG on my N/A 850 with the 2.4 5 Cylinder. When driving for mpg. The rest of the time is whaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
I had a 2011 S40 T5 (same thing as the c30) and my mpgs in city were 25 mpgs, I would only fill it halfway once every week an a half to two weeks and I live in California (expensive af) so gas wasn’t a problem for me
I have a 2012 C30 R-design and I average 20-22 mpg. 31 mpg on pure highway driving
Yeah my 98 T5 costs £85 to fill up and got me sub 300 miles. I don't daily it anymore.
Yeah i tuned the 2.5 from the R series and the gas mileage is terrible(but that sound makes it all worth it especially when it spits flame and pops)
I've been in love with this car ever since I watched twilight. DON'T JUDGE ME lol
😂You had to admit it didn't you
@@duhduhlovo1670 someone had to say it because I know I'm not the only one 😂😂
Ive had my 2011 t5 c30 for half a year now and hoping to have it forever. Such a great handling car, looks amazing, and the exhaust sounds so good even stock... straight piped its a baby v10
I have a 2013 C30 Polestar, LOVE it, living in Austin where the traffic, being polite, sucks this is so fun. I took an 1,800 mile road trip and averaged 36 mpg, which blew my mind. so far all I have done is oil changes. I have never been in the back seat but took 4 good sized grown men to diner and they all said they had plenty of room. This car is a definite sleeper
1:30 wow...... Immediately lost all interest with that rear end
It’s based on the Volvo 1800es from the 60’s. Look it up and you’ll see what I’m referring to
@@MrEsaleniuc yep.....still lost all interest
Lol that's actually my favorite part of it 😂
@@MrEsaleniuc 1800es was not a 60's car, at least not in the US. Early 70's.
Too bad it’s an auto☹️
still dope tho
Its my daily lol didnt want a manual daily car anymore.
Volvo modular engine with 5 cylinders started around 1992 and was implemented into the Volvo 850, it has been used for many performance cars for Volvo, but with mid-power. Volvo still had fuel consumption in mind, They made the 850r that later on was made with more power and AWD in the S60R with 300hp. The engine is very fun to rebuild and puts loads of boost on. In Sweden/Europe u can find loads of Volvo cars pushing 500-700Hp on the streets.
Glad u did review it I own a 2010
C30 R design same as the one u show but the aero kit .. My mods air intake , do88 fmic , with 2 3/4 piping , cat less down pipe 3 inch and hiflow magna flow resonator .. In about a month hopefully the Hilton tuning stage 2+ .. I love this car much fun with it is quick and bes thing u bearly see this car around wish make it unique a unicorn
Hey! You finally reviewed one of my cars! Up next better be the Caliber SRT4!
I've got an older Volvo 850 (Similar 5 cyl engine but naturally aspirated and manual trans) that's straight piped/side exit aside from the cat-converter and it bellows 5 cylinder goodness every day. The downshifts are probably the best part though. 5 Cylinder downshift burbles sound completely different to other engine layouts due to the firing interval. (144 degrees as opposed to 180 like you'd have in a 4 cylinder or 120 like you'd get from a 6 pot)
I love my 2008 C30 T5 V2.0 (R-design)!!! Also for the interior on the V2.0 the steering wheel is way more aggressive w/ aluminum inserts and a different shape. Also the seats in the 2.0 were made with this weird cloth/rubber that holds you to the seat a bit more than the leather, and have more adjustments for lumbar, tilt, ECT. Woulda been cool to see an R-design 😁
I wish I still had my Mazdaspeed 6. Hope you get to review one some day, I know you did the speed 3
My Dad had a 5 cylinder Audi 100 2.2 and that car sounded cool and was pretty quick back in the day when I was a kid!
It felt like traction control was still on, because it was. The factory switch only lets you disable spin control so you can do burnouts, but traction control is still active.
Come drive my Stage3 AWD C30 track car some time, I'm in GA too.
I totally forgot about these cars when I ended up buying a Fiesta ST a couple years ago. I probably would have looked real hard for a c30 if I thought about it then. That 5 cylinder sounds great.
I have S40 T5. It's so fun to drive. Some mods and it's even better. so freaking much torque that now I hope I should have bought the awd version. Also got it running 240km/h until I took my foot off the gas...
