Probably the best slam dunk contest considering what great dunkers a number of those guys were. I mean, Erving, Wilkins, Nance, and Drexler-four of the best right there, and I thought Woolridge looked amazing as well.
Judges didn’t understand the technicalities of some of these dunks. They just went for the flash. Dr J’s tap off the backboard only got a 44. I like how his kids helped him also
Back in 80s and early 90s the dunk contest was used to help make you a household name. Without all the media we have now it was harder to be known. It was the drunk contests that boosted names like MJ (before the rings) & Nique. Even Vince Carter name got a major boost from the dunk contest. And Names like Spudd Webb, Dee Brown, Larry Nance, Isiah Rider, would've just been average NBA Joe's. Nowadays guys names are bigger than their game almost immediately. That's why big names aren't as eager to participate.
Even Sampson knew he could not win the competition but he thought was a competent dunker and he just wanted to compete. Lebron has been in the league for 17 years, not once has he entered the dunk contest. To me, that shows he is not a true competitor. MJ lost a dunk contest but that made him hungrier to win it.
@@Beezle66 Thats just not true look up Jordan kilganon or Isaiah Rivera or other pro dunker there soooooo many creative dunks never done in the nba dunk contest
@@TheSands83 IMHO, on the whole, though very talented, he was an under-achiever, often outplayed by much shorter players, e.g. Kevin McHale and others. Never had the "heart of a champion" and paled in comparison to his own team mate Hakeem Olajuwan.
Had they seen the dunks before them like players have now, this would have been a pretty damn good lineup. Drex, Doc, 'Lando, Nance, Nique and Dunkenstein could all get up.
@7:55 Doc's son had the right idea. I think if Doc listened to his son he would've won. Lol. "Throw it against the back board, catch it and cradle it and then dunk it."
I can't believe Larry Nance got a 49 for his first dunk in the 2nd rd, a simple off the backboard dunk. That's like the first dunk a 15 or 16 year old kid does. ...since it's actually easier to jump without the ball.
Uh yeah because they saw these guys do dunks so it evolves numbnuts but woolridge went between legs they didnt show it n some of those nance dunks not many guys can do
what many people may not realize is that, yes, while today's dunkers have the benefit of learning from the past and past mistakes, SO DO CAMERAMEN. If 1984 videographers could have known to implement this era's filming techniques (low & sweeping angles, wider MM, subtle movement on pans, etc) and had access to modern HD cameras... dunks like 8:38 would look far, far more impressive. FAR more impressive. What today's advanced videography techniques and technologies can do might surprise you. Case in point: there is a (likely accidental & for some reason extremely rare) camera angle of Michael Jordan's 88 dunk from the FT line - it's from behind and to the left; strikingly similar to several famous views of Vince Carter's dunks in 2000. Honestly, it seriously looks absolutely UNREAL. Unreal by any dunk contest's standards. And I'm not saying this as some MJ nut hugger. Today's contestants have the advantage of history to assess what works and what _doesn't work._ But don't forget, the guys & gals holding the cameras have the same advantage. If you think this comment is reaching, it only goes to show the magic of modern cinema. Try YT searching 'FT line dunk rare angle' or something like that. Cheers!

Dude NOBODY can rock the baby opposite way like nance. That shit is so extremely underrated
These old dunk contests take me back. Thanks for the uploads!
Back when the dunk contest was filled will All-stars!
Keep in mind Dr.J was 34 years old still participating in the dunk contest and came in second place.
Jumping like a mad man
It was gifted..’Nique should’ve been in the finals with Nance.
LeBom ruined the Dunk contest
Doc was way better than Nique.
How old are you? 34 is not old? Him at 34 prob has 10 years dunking left in him!
Dominique with the windmill jam!😘
Modern day dunks are magical! 1984 was humble begining!

Although these are old Dunks, the sound effects are great, kaboomffaa, the ball is slammed home, nice.

How is that? U think they were stupid this wasn't the first dunk competition
Kid: "Throw it up, off the backboard, craddle it and then dunk it"
Vince Carter: Got it 💯

Dudes are great but what a long way the dunk has come. Awesome
This makes me want to play nba jam
Wow, I remember watching this...and wearing those shorts myself!
Wow, the dunk contest has changed over the years. I like the fact that some of the biggest stars participated.
They know fans will be happy to see them in a dunk contest.

Estos si eran MegaEstrellas de la NBA, lejos los mejores de su Tiempo junto con Jordan, y sus Mates eran Increhibles, Creativos y Incomparables👑
Back when this was actually something to look forward to
I mean every dunk has been done, it's hard to come up with new ways to put the ball in lmao

Ralph Sampson, 7ft 4in really! In the dunk contest.
Julius the Dr. Erving
The really good old days, miss the 90s and 2000s era.

Nothing better than a well done Tomahawk dunk!
DR J LOOKING LIKE RICHARD PRYOR😲😲😲😲

Exactly
Clyde Drexler"s hair! Lol! 😂
JHERI CURLS WAS THE SHIT IN 1984😎😎😎

Dominique Wilkins the BEST.

Dunks have evolved soo much it's crazy.
They were better at judging these contests back then than today
Dominique Wilkins is the true winner of the contest. He had the best dunks.
Tough judges back then.
No those dunks were plain.
Increíble cómo estuvo más espectacular el torneo de clavadas de 1984 que el del 2020!!!

Orlando Waldridge was the first one to do the between the legs in a dunk contest.

Doctor at 33.
This like playing the Atari video game
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Lmao
I always wondered how good Orlando woolridge could have been if he could have shook his demons , his short time with the lakers he was so strong
Nance他老爸 灌籃的創意明顯高於當時很多 wow!
Drexler was using Soul glow
Really wish the video hadn’t cut out before the amazing replay. Reupload and leave it about 30 seconds longer
Yeah it was the best dunk and no replay :)
That tap the backboard dunk by doc was crazy
4:42 this was done earlier this year and they made it seem like it was an original.
Some of these dunks are so vanilla and easy looking compared to today
It's hilarious how I could actually do most of these dunks lol.

THIS IS GOLD
This is absolutely, positively the ONLY dunk contest for which the following statement is true, but… DOMINIQUE WILKINS GOT ROBBED.
This contest is more fair than the pre-fixed one-sided Slam Dunk 2020!
Wilkens had like 4 dunks in every competition he was in and some how still managed high scores
Always the same windmill dunks
Los Dos últimos . . . La Mejor☆
Gotta say, Dunkenstein was fuggin badass.
These guys can take any body out in this era
Well i certainly don't care for all the props today. These guys were all about individual creativity.
Awesomeness 💥 🏀
Dr.J should have got second attempt for that miss dunk. Rules are different back in the day.
Imagine if one of them would have thought of putting their arm in the rim back then. It would have been epic!!!
Bro it was back in the days don't compare it to nowadays
They seemed taller with those short shorts 🩳
My dad had the vhs of this lol.
Dr J is MJ idol don't forget guy's👍👏
Dr. J was like a poor man's Brent Barry.
actually I think it was David Thompson
Still a better contest than 2020
Larry nance junior, larry nance. father like son
Old and dated as this is, it’s STILL better than a lot of the more recent contests...
A ref passing the ball in the dunk contest 😂
Notice - Larry Nance was doing the ‘rock the cradle’?
They jump like 30 inches of the floor wow 😏
For real wack ass hell dunks like you said 30 inch oh wow
Don't you think maybe you would want to show the replay of the final dunk???
Dr. J should really come up with his own material and not use Jordan for his ideas. 😂
He was doing this before Jordan was even thought of back in 1976 him and David Thompson
You forgot MJ did His dunk because Dr J told Him do it Right? He copied Dr J
@@SlapSoCold right, I didn’t know the sarcasm would be too much…
Doc did two FT line dunks. First one he was a foot inside the line so wasn't actual FT line dunk and second he had his foot on the line.
Michael Cooper was competing
They treated it like an actual contest back then, now it's a side-show-circus.
0:48, don’t know what’s worse: This cradle being called a “windmill” or a “basic cradle”....
If u missed a dunk, u were pretty much done. Doc's tap the backboard, then the flush was cold. If he had been in his early 20s, he wins easily.

Dr J retired from basketball in 87' BUT here he is taking off from the free throw lines? ..
