- Moon phase, lure colors, best times, Matt gives up all the secrets on night fishing so you can catch more bass this Summer!
Most anglers have heard they should throw a black worm and fish on a full moon. That's great advice but there are so many other tricks you need to try!

Here are some quick tips you need to know this Summer...
1) Don't forget the new moon. Sure, the full moon is great, but the new moon can be even better and there are a lot less fisherman on the water!
2) White baits. We've all been taught to focus on black lures at night but do you even know why? Throw that information away and begin experimenting with whites, chartreuses, and even the natural colors like brown and green. You'll be surprised by the results!
3) Use a mix of slow moving baits (jig or worm) with fast moving baits like topwater, chatterbaits, or crankbaits to give the fish a one-two punch that they can't resist.
4) Braided line. Braid gives you a huge advantage at night. You gain sensitivity and responsiveness at a time where visibility is less of an issue, there really isn't a downside.

In all honestly i've cashed a few checks off the knowledge given from these guys, I really appreciate the hard work you guys put in making all of this content for everybody to enjoy. Great work Tim and Matt.
Great video- and you are SO right about fish. I have a personal testimony to that. Last summer and fall I had one big public pond that I fished 3 days a week. It's heavily pressured. I caught a lot of 2lb fish and my two biggest were 4lbs.
In February- after a local guide took my brother and I out on a local lake and we caught an 11lb 1oz giant- I got the idea to night fish my pond...
I'd fish from 8pm-11pm; and I caught a bass over 6lbs six nights in a row! The biggest three were 8.7, 8.3, and 7.9. Monsters! And no pressure- no other fishermen until late April/may I met a few guys.
I have found the Rage Blade is a great option in late winter/early spring before the grass comes in much. It's wider wobble than the chatterbait- which work better later in the spring for me. I only wish they'd make heavier rage blades- the heaviest is only 1/2 oz and it's hard to keep down on the bottom.
Matt you're not a scientist, you are a wizard!!!!!! Great vids keep it up 👍👍👌👌
Matt, this is a very timely video for me. I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with another patron of our local tackle store, and he kindly shared with me his success at night in the same lake I fish in, as well as his technique. In fact, before watching this video I had already intended to order some LED Navigation Lights for my kayak. Your video certainly added some tactics that I was curious about. By the way, he fishes black finesse jigs with small trailers and uses a black light to see his line. Thanks a bunch.
You didn’t list your infrared illuminator in the description. I need to know
love night bass fishing.. can't wait to watch the more in-depth video, I go out at night year round and catch in so many different situations. Thank you for always keeping it fresh and entertaining
Thanks Ron!
the exact thinking process I have with night fishing, good stuff! I caught a 10lber at night with white and charttruse
Guys,I get asked all the time how do I catch so many big fish(Massachusetts's standards). Its because I fish at night in the summer. I fish local ponds in the Winchendon Area and I target culverts with moving water for the most part. The live target sunfish has been getting slammed! also frogs, spinnerbaits and spooks.I mix it up because I fish a lot of the same areas. Also because I watch your channel!! Thanks again Tim and Matt.
Matt, you ought to try a black buzz during the full moon. I throw a 1/8 oz with double (side by side) blades with a black ruby grub. Giants will hammer it. More subtle than a larger buzz and doesn't seem to spook them. Good info and kinda cool with the infra red.
Great video! Can you do a video on how to fish summer without a graph?
Great idea! I think at the least we can incorporate that into another video we've got planned.
TacticalBassin Cool!
you guys are the best on youtube i use lots of your methods and advice and so far has been working out great
Thanks Sam!
TacticalBassin do you guys ever get around Philadelphia PA would totally love to meet you guys sometime
I agree with colors.. don't use anything in the middle color spectrum.. either go BRIGHT or DARK. You nailed the moon phase deal as well. Great video.... can you give more details on your setup for lighting, ive been wanting to do night video but not sure how to set it up
I agree with your take on colors at night. I've had great luck with chatterbait in white/chartreuse as well as black and blue. Also a one knocker lipless in chrome has killed it for me too.
Although this is an older post I wanted to share one bit of information that I have learned from many years of fishing at night in my canoe. On clear nights during the full moon phase - the moonlight will create dark shadows in the same type places the sun creates shade during a clear day. Fish them just like you would shade during the day.... I've found that the larger bass use these shadows (large being relative to location) as ambush sites, security, etc.
Biggest stringer of fish I've ever caught on Toledo was at night on the night of the new moon. All me and my buddy threw was a big topwater wooden rat and a big black and chartreuse with #7 and #5 Colorado blades. We smashed 42 pounds with 5 fish and we still talk about it to this day. Going to a lake about 2 hours from my house that has some giants in it after Brett gets down with the northern swing on the elites. Hopefully we crack a 50 pound sack it'll still be fun anyway! Great vid guys!
Best fishing channel on RUclips. Straight to the point in every video and always reaching. Thanks for much for the amazing tips Matt 👍🏻
Thanks Bud!
Matt. Dude love these night videos. Dude right on......
Another great video! I have been wanting to go night fishing for some time now and this is good stuff that really helps. Closest I've been to night fishing is about an hour or hour and a half pre-dawn. It's a real charge to hear the fish schooling and hitting the top of the water. Here in East Texas it's hot right now and night fishing would be a welcome relief from the daytime heat.. Thanks again for your information and instruction. ALWAYS enjoy your videos!!!
Thanks Jim! You'll love it, you should definitely give it a try
Never been night fishing but now I wanna go. Great info. Thank you
completely agree.. from personal experience I have found my white buzzbait will outfish my darker one 9 out of 10 times....by the way love the buzzbait tips made one heck of a difference
looooove night fishing..3 of my pb's were caught at night..for me anyways, i feel there are certain windows throughout the night better than others..2 of my fish were caught at almost the exact same time 1 week apart..both were a pb..i know every body of water is different but I just found that interesting..i had both those fish dialed in to like a 45 minute window of them feeding..after that they were ghosts..ive caught ALOT of quality fish at night..actually pulling an all nighter soon..sundown to sunup..one of my favorite sessions to do..awesome video Matt as always
great video as always fellas. I've caught a lot of big big fish at night. good info.
You guys are awesome. It is my yr maybe not fishing 100% but buying a house. Once that happens (2weeks) fish on! Great job Tim n Matt. Let's get those subs up!
finally someone agrees with me about the full moon thing. I've done my best in the lowest light at night. a lot of people don't believe the whole "color makes a difference at night" but it really does. I am going in 2 weeks on a Friday and Saturday night. Have to find some fish Friday night and tournament Saturday night.
Awesome man, have a blast out there!!
I was hoping you guys would make a night fishing video. After you answered my questions about it a while back I've been out twice and did very well. Thanks again!
You're welcome, great job!
Excellent info bro. Thanks for education. How do you orient yourself at night when you can't see? Do you navigate by gps charts or do you use lights?
Good advice... Caught my PB on the full moon in a stained fishery on a white Tommy popper!
Awesome!!
I've been preaching day and night fish for years...my buddy's think I'm crazy. Awesome video.
great video gentleman doing some night fishing this past year down here in Florida I fish a lot on my own going night fishing it's a little sketchy definitely something to get used to some of my best fishing has been at night
Do you use the IR light just to illuminate the boat or do you use it to illuminate where you want to cast ? Such as illuminating flooded bushes/tules?
I notice you brought up conventional gear for night fishing but do you toss the big swimbaits at night? If so what's some of your favorite ones to toss?
Great video!! Hands down the most informative youtubers.
I have said it before and I'm going to say it again. Absolute most informative fishing channel on youtube. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Can you give us a link to the infrared lights you recommend?
Thanks so much Paul! Its more than lights, the camera had to be completely rebuilt into an infrared camera.
Tacticalbassin you are hands down the best big fish you tube Channel out there keep up the grate work
Thanks Cole!
This is the Real Deal - Night Bassing Info - It's a whole different world at night & an Amazing experience. Takes fishing to the next level ~ When you get good at getting bass in the dark, daytime almost seems like cheating ~ Nice Job. btw - what's the infrared light you're using ? I need that
I LOVE night fishing! Caught my pb smallmouth night fishing. Do you think smallies would hit topwater at night?
Such an awesome video! Ur a natural Matt! I could watch you guys all day. Take care buddy.
I've always heard the thing about dark colors. But recently I have been fishing a small pond in the middle of my town with crystal clear water. Bc of the location, it's extremely pressured but has a few very nice bass in it (It's stocked with trout in winter). I doubt the moon is a factor, as street lights provide light every night. The few times I fished at night, I tried dark colors and had no success. But I did well with a gold crankbait and a small worm in green pumpkin. Will have to try whites and other natural colors.
Awesome thanks for sharing your knowledge Matt!!!! Great video and some solid tips.
Great video, and I couldn't agree more in regards to the new moon. I fish mostly on lakes with 10+ feet of visibility, and have had much better results in the pitch black. Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Its amazing how consistent that is
We fished at Tobin Lake (which is one of the great fishing spots of South Saskatchewan) and obviously we were after walleye and we fished all night until about 4 a.m. when the sun started coming up we were using the 13 p floating Rapala and we painted the belly with fluorescent paint and charged it with the flashlight that was working great and a steady catch of a round 8 pound walleye which were all released cuz we were after the big one but never caught one
great video and perfect timing for this I just recently started bass fishing at night one question is it the same from the bank as I don't have a boat thanks for all the helpful videos and information you guys are the best
100% the same
Great Video long time subscriber! TB in your experience when is the most productive time of the night to fish? Do you work from the evening on? or do you look to start a couple of hours after sunset?
Man it's really awesome what you guys do relaying so much information
Matt and Tim I was wondering if you guys could do videos in 360 please it would be awesome to watch good job thumbs up
Awesome video, can't wait for the follow up!
Are you using a filter on the GoPro when filming at night like this?
Its a lot more than that, its a completely modified camera
TacticalBassin It looks great whatever you did!
What's up Matt? I'm a huge fan of yours and watch you all the time but, I wanted to ask you what braided line do you use for as the name of the braid or what's the best one? You produce videos. Keep up the great work, you're awesome!!
MrJdubb80 look in the description he will post every thing he uses and it takes you straight to Tackle warehouse site where you can buy it.
Hey tb this might be a little dumb to ask but can you do a video on different structures in the lake? For example like a point or bluff wall and why it's important to fish it
Yes we can
great video, must try these suggestions one of these days
Good video. Gonna go fishing tonight and order IR lights tomorrow!
Thanks for posting, keep 'em coming!
Hey Matt, love your videos! How are you getting infrared out if the gopro?
Do you fish the jig without a trailer? If not any suggestions?
If your night worm or gig fishing use black lights and fluorescent line. It will look the size of water hose and you won't miss those subtle bites. I like Ridged Industry, but any 12 v. UV light will work, and use Nano fluorescent green 14 lb. line.
Very informative videos ! Keep it up thanks!
Awesome video! Thanks!
Great tips. Thanks
Awesome video Matt! Would UV colored baits or glow in the dark baits be effective?
up to 66K half way through the year......100K around the corner. i haven't gotten my 5lb SM but i did break my PB SM on the S waver in a lake where my club buddies call me crazy for throwing everything bigger than they do. if they are throwing a 4 in swim bait i throw a 6 in, if they throw 1/2 oz jig i throw opposite direction and 3/4 oz. haven't finished less than 5th this year. and I'm willing to give credit where its due, keep putting out the videos guys.
That's awesome!! Thanks Bud!
As a person that fishes at night ALL the time in the northeast...I hate the full moon. Sure I have caught big fish during the full moon...but I find topwater to be tough during the full moon. I love the new moon.
was it awkward recording yourself when it's pitch black? lol how were you able to keep eye contact with the camera or know if you were in frame lol! Great video!
Nice vid! In one of your old night fishing videos you showed a 10 inch spear worm. I haven't been able to find it. Do you know where I could find them or something close?
They're discontinued :-(
I agree. .cause I fish night on super clear water & I stick with natural color...@about that white color it's true what u said..
perfect timing. since I work 3rd I wanted to get out and do some night fishing.
just not sure how hard it is to see were I'm going as I have never done it lol
Oh its hard to see just go slow and fish your closest spots and you'l be just fine.
I am the king of backlashing a bait caster while fishing at night. I don't know why, but my casts are all kinds of jacked up. I don't know if it's because I can't judge the distance to the bank, or I just lose the feel of the spool in my thumb. Looking forward to your next night time bass fishing video.
Fischize I used to have the same problem. You are probably over thinking it. Look at your target, don't think, and cast. Your brain knows what to tell your body to do. Practice it, bet you'll find it works:)
Just start stopping the lure before it hits the water to be safe lol
Great info gentleman like always.
i have a question. you say the power Worm is one of your first choices. do you think the Berkeley sent that they put in there has anything to do with it especially at night. or is it one of those things that don't matter at night?
I think its a factor although as a whole I don't care about scent... that one is an exception.
Jitterbugs at night... Tough to beat. I'm gonna have to try a white one now though 🕺
Nice video man!
You think you guys could do a bait caster maintenance / tare down of the higher end Shimano? You guys are awesome thanks for this video!
Do you have any advice on how to film catching fish that nail the hook and jump out of the water at night
what lures or jig do you recomend in sea inshore night fishing?
I've always felt like the fish shut off on lighter colors once the sun gets so low. Switch to a black spook and it'd pick back up. I noticed the same thing happening in the morning in reverse. My light color spook is a G Finish Shad. Low light im tossing black spooks.
Hey matt is small mouth aggressive enough to hit top water lures?
I’m fishing the “new super moon” In Oklahoma this Friday night, does the “super” moon change anything when it comes to fishing tactics
matt when you say clear water how much visibility are you talking? my lake has about 5' visibility with a slight brown tint
love fishing braid at night!
Matt I found a big school of fish caught 16.25 with 3 fish in 20mins, 19ft of water slow rolling a spinner bait and then nothing. I tried numerous other baits but still nothing. What would be your top 3 choices to get them to bite.
They were sitting under couple big groups of shad, but not feeding had the occasional blow up but no streaks on the graph
Thanks for the info Matt I'm a huge fan of your videos.
What is your take on luminescent baits for night fishing?
Over the years we just haven't had the success we expected to have
TacticalBassin I haven't either. It is good to hear your guy's take on the matter. Thanks for the reply. Gonna paint some white bellies on my black night baits now.
AWSOME VIDEO BUDDY. what kind of lights do u have on the bow of your boat. spotlight wise.
None at all, we fish blacked out
awesome tips going out tonight!!!
How many feet of visiblility would you conciter clear and visa versa for stained water
whats your lake like... thats what i consider clear to stained... if it is normal for you its probley clear to your fish... then of course from there its stained or dirty.. that is a common way to estamate your clarity in my opion
Perfect time to make this video
Do fish move from their daytime areas at night? Like do you fish the same spots where they are in the day time?
Sometimes we fish the same spots but often we have day spots and night spots that are completely unrelated.
What action/power rod do you use for throwing those 10xds and will it also effectively handle smaller and shallower divers as well?
We're using the Shimano Zodias 7'6" Medium heavy and it will throw both with is, its a nice "in between" rod. Here it is... bit.ly/2cgmMAe
TacticalBassin First off, thank y'all for replying as I have asked several of the other popular RUclips bass fisherman the same question and none of them responded with an answer. Secondly, thank y'all for putting out what I consider to be the absolute best bass fishing tutorials as the whole video is packed full of useful information (a lot of which I have employed with great success) and not a lot of the fluff that a lot of the other guys use. So thank you for that, but I assume that you are using the glass model? Just looking to get into more cranking as I'm about to start at NC State and hopefully join the BassPack which is their bass fishing team that competes in the bass master college series
Wow. Gr88 information as always. Thanks. Got a Question. I have tried braided line in my bait cast reel never works nots up fast. But I use 20lb which does great on my open face reel and holds up fine on the catfish / gar I catch from the river. And they weigh any were fron 1lb to 80lbs. I'm so confused on this. If yall have time to help thanks
Matt do a video on eclipse fishing it coming up in August
I skunk during the day and I skunk during the night the only time I don't skunk is when there's a eclipse
lol thumbs up
Is that a GoPro you're using and what setting do you have it on. My brother was home on leave from the Navy and gifted me a couple of tactical flashlights with IR options.
Its a GoPro but its been completely disassembled and built into an IR camera.
TacticalBassin well ain't that fancy.lol
I have a GP Hero 4 Silver and I thought maybe it was "Night" mode with a certain frame rate or other setting.
Tactical bassin would you throw a big swim bait on a heavy rod with a soft tip or not plz answer
TRUTH! Night time IS the right time!!
Would you fish a senko at night
Great video, thank you!
how do you feel about brush hogs at night? either texas rigged or carolina
They're great. Kind of half way between the jig and the worm
Thanks for the tips awesome video
Hey Matt & Tim! Do you guys follow the Solar lunar calendar?
night fishing i do good with green pumpkin black flake and watermelon black flake senkos at night 6 inch
how do the glx heavys compare to the dobyns heavys I bought a 7'3 heavy fury just to get a feel for the brand but I've been wanting a high end jig/Texas rig/worm rod and maybe heavy swim jigs just not sure which to get
Very simlilar powers between the two.
ive been using lights mounted on the side of the boat just so i can see where im casting and cover position etc. and i have been told that lights spook the fish and that i shouldnt use any lights at all, what are your thoughts on this?
You won't scare all the fish but you'll potentially scare the right ones... the ones you really want to catch. We fish completely blacked out.
Personally Ive had most my success on black and blue but I have also had success on white too
I fished at night for years here in Ohio, and also New York and Ontario Canada, a few things I have noticed over the years. Some waters, whether they are lakes, rivers, or farm ponds have a much better night bite than others, on some it seemed like a wasted effort to bother. Bass can find an awful small lure in the dark, 4 inch worms and a 1/8th ounce hair jig always seemed to work well, day or night.
Great tips
