Very happy to hear an unbiased review on this and thank you for being so up front about that part! Hopefully they can fix the mirrored design part in a future revision
Is it me or was the monitors' resolution never mentioned? Also, having more details about the (perceived) viewing quality, especially vs the embedded panel's, would be nice.
Was waiting for that as well.
Look at the Amazon link in the description: dual 12” FHD/1080p panels, 60 Hz, 72% NTSC color gamut, which is approximately 100% sRGB.
I do a bit of photoshop work. I wonder how the color correctness is on this
@@richardalbury Yes, this is accurate.
@@adamwrose The image is brighter, I guess the panel brightness gets through, the blacks aren't as black.
I actually have one already, Bought it on Prime day when it fell 200$ in price. Works for me as yours works for you. I to agree its kind of cumbersome to setup, but when you need it its quite handy... One thing to keep in mind for your Mac peeps, The Airs can only drive one of the displays not both... The MBP can drive both as you demonstrated... In my case its on my Legion 7...
The spring on the thing is really strong. You have to be careful not to sever a finger 😆
Exactly what I came here for as a MacBook Air user. Thanks for the info. This set up will be moot for my needs.
Would be awesome having this to increase my productivity Alex!!
I never even thought this was an option. Thanks for sharing, this is something I need to consider.
Great timing. I had just been looking at reviews of these and got a little lost in how many were available. Appreciate the detailed review.
I always use 3 monitor, one for e mail, one for my assignment dash board, and one for drawing. Since i am a building plans check engineer I really liked this specially for travel and even spending a night with friend. Thanks and will get one for sure unless i win one by my comment.
I have been wanting to get something like this for a while now (the kickstarter for Slidenjoy, etc.), but with the price point so high, I have traveled with two laptops quite a bit. It is good to hear that the prices of these are dropping! If I don't win the raffle, I'll definitely look into these again! Going from multiple screens down to 1 screen when traveling definitely feels cramped especially when I try to keep one screen dedicated to monitoring my T1D blood sugar levels! Thanks for this raffle!
I use an external 1080p monitor as well, but I find it hard to use when I have one with literally more than double the pixel density and way higher color accuracy
If you will connect your iPad via a cable there will be no disconnecting issues (just don't forget to answer that you trust your Mac when it asks it on the first connection). Sidecar is a great feature, the only downside is perhaps Sidecar's system requirements could be a bit lower - you'll need a modern Mac and a modern iPad for it work. It would have been nice if the older iPads were compatible as well, they have great screens, and this feature could have given a second life to them.
This was awesome. Please do more videos on portable monitors. Especially battery powered and wireless ones. And if you could also do more in depth tests - display quality/resolution, battery life etc... I think it would be awesome.
This review made me want to get a developer review of using an ipad as an external monitor
Thanks for taking the time to show us! Yeah….we’ve been indoors for a LONG time…but now I want to get out…but still work. This looks like a good solution!
This is a very cool device. It's definitely something I could see myself using when I'm developing on the go.
I use my iPad pro 12.9inch as a second display with sidecar. I use a cable instead of wireless because it disconnects on wireless. It didn't disconnect until I installed Monterey. I'd love to a have a multi-monitor setup for when I do dev work on the go. Using the iPad wired drains my laptop battery to charge the iPad.
I've always drempt of having a solution like this, would make app development on my Macbook so much easier!
Left one monitor for surfing, mid one for coding and third one for seeing output 😄
(@5:48) - I think that’s called a kickstand (like on a bicycle/motorcycle), not a footstool. Handy. 🙂
Thanks for the review. I have used multiple monitors in coffee shops (go to one of many in Asheville, NC!) or especially in coworking shops.
What I refuse to do is spring-attach this triple-system (actually dual) to a nice MacBook. The resolution of the LG Gram View is 2K (not the 1080p), lightweight, has mirrored USB-C ports on each side, and is very thin (easy to protect in a sleeve).
Thanks for unbiased review as I was about to buy two screen connection luckily I got one screen connection which is more than enough for wrk and in my budget as well 😊
This would really come in handy. I also have had lots of issues with Sidecar disconnecting. But those issues go away if I connect my iPad Pro directly to my Mac via a USB to Lightning cable. Keep up the great vids!
Seems like an interesting setup for on-the-go coffe-shop-programmers lol... Nice video!
I had a 15.6" external monitor while I was traveling for 2 years. Night and day experience with my workflow. I am glad I got a larger external monitor that was not attached to my computer.
To answer your question about more monitors, YES more is always better. During the lockdown I built my home work setup to SEVEN monitors total including the laptop screen. Going back to the office with only 3 monitors was hard and I do feel less productive in the office because of it.
I'm considering this setup for my work office to take me to six monitors, including a spare monitor I'll take into the office to setup in portrait mode for letter documents, a very useful setup I have in my home office.
That's quite impressive! Even though it's maybe heavy but it's quite useful ! Who doesn't love a triple monitor on the go?
These sorts of folding external monitors (there are several "brands" selling what appear to be the same panels) are something I've toyed around with getting, but haven't yet. It seems cumbersome for everyday use, but I could see them being useful when you're called in to work on something on a weekend when you're away from your main setup.
It just takes like a minute to setup.
I wish i can get this one, been strugling to work without an extra monitor
Pretty cool, I wonder how many people would be looking at you wondering what this is in the coffee shop, could be distractive.
I’ve been using an 10.5 iPad Pro as a 2nd monitor on the go with an 11” Air for years. Mx Air and a 12.9” iPad Pro would be an upgrade. The external display looks cumbersome. I just want to flip 2 cased devices closed, throw them in my bag, and go.
It would have been nice, if you could somehow adjust the tilt angel of monitors. When you tilt the laptop monitor, the other monitors will look horizontally tilted. In comparison, pay attention to the way an iPad is tilted by Alex.
That's quite impressive! Even though it's maybe heavy but it's quite useful ! Who doesn't love a triple monitor on the go? ^^
Would love to try one of these. Ive been looking at them coz working from home has distractions, pets and family wanting attention etc but can't live without my extra screens and I ain't dragging.
I got one for free to review.
I always wanted this but didn’t want to spend the money.
This really comes in handy for traveling.
Stock investors and content creators will love it
This is actually a really cool thing, I saw this as a concept some years ago from razer in a LTT video and I think this can be very useful
Maybe consider a ultrawide
This is an excellent video!, all respetable developer has to have at least one extra screen to carry stack-overflow everywhere.... Thanks!
Finally, work station on the go :). I enjoy your videos, keep’em coming.
Want to thank you for all of your work on this channel. As a die hard windows user, I have enjoy seeing the work that you have put in to show the Mac as both a valid choice for development and the this is why I choice a PC :). As a windows developer, I have sat in my truck at a client site with a single monitor and would have kill for a second monitor. Thanks again for all of your hard work.
Send me these monitors please, here in Brazil these set UP cost a Fortune... I AM always travelling and 2 extra monitors Will be Nice! As always great content chief, keep It up
Hey Alex! Thanks for reviewing this product, I was looking into an extra monitor on the go.
I like the idea of having 1 or 2 monitors added to the laptop, my concern was always the weight of the unit. I might toy around with a set up for my music programs
I’ve been using my iPad as an extra monitor on the go, but to have 2 extra monitors on the go would be nice.
I think a wired ipad is all I'd consider just for the one screen. The lower priced ones could be great for people with less space to leave at home as a dock, choices.
This would look amazing in a meeting room. I can just see myself being THAT guy
I am only starting to learn code, so I don't know if I need this setup, but I know someone who could use this one at home.
Nice review. I've been looking for something like this to expand my workspace outside.
Would like to have these while working on the road between customers and always missing two screens.
Looks very neat however not very bright. I hope I can check it out
This looks cool. I would be interested in a single monitor unit but this Is cool. Especially if it expands the port options.
Niiiice. This or one like it will help me get out of my wife's hair while remote working. Might be critical for when the baby comes. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for this great video ❤️, I would love one of this ones!!!!
I would like to have this kind of setup when I was working with a client using my laptop, this would help me in coding
It would be much more interesting if the portable monitor was a bit brighter and was the same size with the main screen. But it does the job. So, great in the end !!!
nice! i sometimes work travel for a couple of weeks, where i could really use this
good to hear that it does not drain that much battery on the apple silicon macs. that is always my concern when shopping for these. now i'm interested!
I have being the DUEX since they were a kickstarter, and recently got my new larger one. Monitor setups like these are the greatest thing since sliced bread, if you are a mobile ( on the go ) developer. I won't get into the reviews and all that stuff, but I will say that as a developer that also finds myself at the Library, or park, or coffee shop, to get out of the house ( I work from home ), these things are a GODSEND
@Alex Ziskind, Thank you for hitting on this topic.
haven’t seen the duex before, but looks pretty good.
@@AZisk I have the duex Trio. It all fits with my MBP 16 in my backpack. It is a bit heavy, but it works well
As i you say, pay a little less to have just one monitor would be the way, but overall seems to be a good gadget too!
Didn't really see if the screens didn't reflect too much and if the brightness was good enough to not be too dark when used in a bright environment (let's say you have your back against the window and it's very sunny outside ... I mean, we don't have the chance to pick the perfect spot at Starbucks every time right 🤣).
Thanks for the review and video as always.
Thank you for the reciew, it was very complete and useful 😁
Looks like a neat little device!
Would be pretty useful for the learning environment. I start my postgrad study in the university, so the timing to win something like that is perfect 😁
I never knew they even made monitors like this! My mbp basically never leaves the desk because just the laptop monitor never seems to be enough.
5:19 - I also noticed frequent disconnections from iPad running Universal Control/Sidecar. Honestly, this is one of these things which causes that - after initial excitement - I don't use this feature anymore. Shame on you, Apple!
We seem to be having the same tech needs
I definitely need this kind of monitor, living in Africa where power is always a big issue.
Wow.. great idea for gaming…. Train simulator… main screen for train’s front window, left and right screens for the train’s side windows. 😀
Been thinking about them a lot quite recently but the weight issue on the monitor hinges have stopped me from buy in them, the foot that this include seem like a really good option to avoid damaging them, thank you for the review 🙂👍
These monitors will help me a lot in my day to day work since I use a laptop as my main computer and unfortunately has a limited space to get another monitor setup on my desk. By the way I'm not in the US, am I still qualified?
I had two monitors until work sent me two to work from home so now including the laptop I got 5. Instead of switching windows you just look at a different monitor I like it :) You can also put one vertical even if you don't need that all the time since you got so many.
Nice review. I would go with the extra expense of two screens as traveling such as on a train, or in a hotel, you would want the extra screen space
Nice device, would be great trying it out. Although, I'm working in front of my two monitors most of the time.
Thanks for the content.
I think its will take not long time before we will be able to use compact vr glasses to work with extra monitors.
Maybe two half Sized Screens would be the sweet spot to work with. It could be folded space efficient - no double whopper. And enough space for some more windows.
Those are very useful monitors So Cool !👍
I was wishing for something like this last week. I was with my mom while she was in the hospital, and I could work on just the one laptop screen but I really felt the lack of my multi-monitor setup at home. Web development on a single screen is maddening.
I kept buying more. I have 4 currently but honestly, I never use the 4th monitor. 3 would suit me just fine.
I always use my iPad Pro as secondary screen, the laggy connection becomes stable when plugged with usb-c. This concept of screens on the go seems appealing, but the resolution (specially vs a MBP 16” M1) it should be good if I want to work for more than 30 min (becoming picky with age 🤣), care to mention? Didn’t seem great in the video…
It looks dope. At lease looks super useful. I can image the people's faces if you took this on a plane. Awesome!
In the video, the screens' brightness seems to be very low. How is it compared to the MacBook screen?
Neat idea! My father would say, pretty Slick. I wonder how well it would work with a Raspberry Pi?
While having a triple monitor is very addictive, I am not sure whether I’d like to carry it on long trips. I got a single panel which is not that heavy and an iPad which is a very reasoble alternative.
Funny, I tried to build one of these while in China 4y ago and the monitors were dirt cheap. Finally gave up and used only on additional "Lenovo one" tablet as secondary monitor
Thanks for the video! I’ve been very curious about these as well. Would love to be more productive while not in my office. And of course would LOVE to win that one. :)
I think the best option for Macbook Pro 14 and 16 users are the Monduo ones. Very good quality displays that really extend your main displays to the sides with the SAME resolution!! Expensive, but the best!
Hi, you know I was just watching your other video comparing the M2Air 8GB with 24GB RAM, you sure stacked them, racked them and packed them. Thank you for that, now I’m much happier with my purchase and I can’t wait for it to arrive. I’m replacing my MacBook Pro 14 which I bought in 2011 with M2Air 16GB RAM and I also spect up the SSD. Hmm I should start my RUclips career with a video about my Pro since the only thing wrong with it is a buzzing speaker and a 4 hour battery. 🤣
yeah, just one extra monitor sounds like a good option when you're not in home. Nice review man!
Does it work with MacBook Air? Since there are two screens...
Thank for sharing a nice equipment. Nice job, Alex !
Ironically I have looked at them, but had concerns about hinge stress on the main display.
My setup has 3 monitors, I use 1 34 inch LG Ultrawide as main and 2 Phillips 28 inch as secondary, one on the mac mini and one on the extra machine that is running little servers for me. Depends on the project I use I only use the ultrawide. This extra side space is really handy. I would never carry something like this you shown, is kind ugly...
are these 3 monitors connected to your laptop (as a 4th monitor ) and is there any lag?
@@dr.strange6458 2 on a Mac mini m1 (ultrawide + phillips) and one Philips on a mini pc. No lag whatsoever.
Once you got used to with dual monitor setup, it's really hard to go back to one ......!!!!!
Does it work when my MacBook Pro is on a laptop stand?
I've been using iPad as sidecar in Starbucks for long in different countries. No one deems me a weirdo yet. It is a good idea to have an extra screen on the other side the primary screen, at least for balance reason, but I won't go for such visual quality unless they get upgraded to at least 2.5k resolution with 99% adobe rgb color gamut. It would be a huge contrast to the retina screen of my MacBook Pro, in terms of both clarity and color.
oh man this is awesome i'd love to get one of those, video editing and coding XD
I wonder if it works on MacBook Air m1/m2 for two external monitors?
Sidecar with iPad disconnects when streaming videos on it due to some copyright issue playing media on a secondary device. It also freezes when a RAM intensive app window is displayed on the iPad. My guess is bluetooth's limited bandwidth can't handle the data transfers. Other than these 2 limitations, the iPad makes a really good companion for a MacBook on the go.
Nice vid. I was curious about this gadget. Seems a nice workflow improvements. Although I'm not sure about the weight
Great video, Alex. I am still undecided on whether to buy. I may wait for cheaper, lighter and bigger.
I normally use side car but this would be cool for dev
