    How it should have ended:
    Burke: You should come along as an advisor, to lay your demons to rest. The company will reinstate your flight status too!
    Ripley: No way.
    Lt Gorman: Ok marines, make sure that if you see any aliens, you spray those armour-piercing explosive bullets into the fusion reactor above your heads. Boy, I really wish there were someone around to point out that that might be a bad idea.
    Ripley: I'm so glad I'm still alive, all the aliens evaporated in a nuclear inferno, and the only people who died are those who would have bought it by the start of the next film anyway. C'mon here, Jonesy, I finally got you a litterbox after 57 years!

    From what I remember NASA did a test with a ... I think it was a nerf football on the effects of popping an airlock. The nerf ball didn't even move. The report said the air didn't rush off at all but kinda just leaked out. I remember an experiment with a smoke filled chamber at pressure with a vacuum on the other side. Quickly dropping the wall between the smoke kinda just.... fell like a slow motion waterfall. I wonder if they still have the video from that (we're talking 20+ years ago). There should be some vids on that experiment somewhere...

    • @gimppower003
      @gimppower003 10 лет назад +10

      Actually, the dynamics of gases act similar to liquids. The amount that would leak out into said vacuum and at what rate would largely depend on how much is in the pressurized chamber. In this case a pressurized chamber the size of a football field with enough air to sustain human life would incur a considerable amount of volume of air within the area. It's almost like take cup of water and poking a hole in it. If you make the hole at the bottom, it will rush out faster since more water is behind it at the bottom. If you make the whole very big it's easier for the liquid to escape and will not rush out in the same sense, but merely ease out.

      Ive always viewed it as that there isnt a "vacuum of space" but a pressure inside the cabin. It should be the same as if you were in a capsule on earth with pressure higher than the normal outside atmosphere. If it is punctured you may feel a small breeze at best if you are near the puncture but otherwise youll just feel the pressure dropping. Your ears would pop like when you travel up or down a mountain. Star Trek Into Darkness was just dumb with that whole sucking a guy into space from across an extremely long room through a tiny hatch opening.

      The HaloForgeUltra Less G? Less gravitational constant (which is what G generally denotes)? Gravitational constant is the same everywhere, and gravitational force depends primary on mass.
      If you meant less pressure, then less pressure simply means diminished effect (so the decompressional "blowout" would be weaker). If the difference between pressures inside and out is *greater*, the "explosive" part of explosive decompression would be stronger, but will still be over in a matter of less than a second. If the hole is too small for air to go through quickly, and the pressure does not tear it bigger, the effect would be very underwhelming. Nothing much would happen.

      The HaloForgeUltra really?? there is gravity in space, it's just diminished because you're so far away from everything else. Your question was stupid "what if there is less G in the airlock", the "gravity" is going to be the same on one side of the airlock as it is on the other.

    • @sinine1100
      @sinine1100 10 лет назад +14

      The HaloForgeUltra Sorry, I am simply not following you. Of course there is gravity in space - as I said, gravity depends primarily on mass, and gravitational constant (the thing you use to calculate how much gravitational force an object generates, denoted G) is the same everywhere. I referred to that in the beginning of my last post.
      Gravity, however, doesn't affect explosive decompression much. Gravity is in general a *very weak* force, and therefore its effect only becomes apparent with very massive objects. At this stage, we also cannot affect the strength of gravitational pull an object of certain mass has.
      Explosive decompression is primarily a matter of difference in pressures, or how dense is the gas on one side compared to the other.

      Ripley has a flamethrower, and a pulse rifle with at least 3 or 4 grenades in it. How much ammo does she waste on the queen alien? Absolutely none. Instead, she decides to destroy all the eggs, which haven't even hatched yet and probably won't get the chance, since the whole place is about to explode. She wastes all the grenades on the egg sack, rather than the queen. The duo runs away, and yet the queen somehow knows how to operate an elevator. The queen hid inside the ship without it being visible to us as the ship took off. In the hole on the Sulago, there's a switch INSIDE the hole to open the gate, as if someone would actually be crazy enough to be down there when that thing opens up; good thing there was another lever on the FLOOR of the ship to close the breach. And as the queen is about to be sucked out, it is able to stay alive long enough by holding onto Ripley's foot until her shoe slips off; in reality, Ripley would've been pulled into the vacuum of space, due to both the strength of the queen and the suction power of outer space.

    • @wtxcrazydonut
      @wtxcrazydonut 10 лет назад +29

      Tyrant Gregcag Ripley wasn't aware that the Queen could separate herself from the egg sack as she was being held up by all those beams and it was attached right at her private parts. The flamethrower didn't have the range to reach the Queen, clearly.
      And incorporate the fact that Ripley wasn't thinking straight (She sorta goes mental for a bit there) it's not beyond belief that she doesn't shoot the Queen DIRECTLY.
      "The duo runs away and yet the queen somehow knows how to operate an elevator. "
      A direct, famous quote from the movie can easily explain her use of the elevator.
      "They cut the power"
      "What do you mean THEY cut the power man?!? They're animals!"
      Do you have a problem with that too?
      Xenomorphs clearly have some sort of mysterious intellect. They aren't just animals.
      It wasn't visible to us because as the ship was stuck in debris, the camera only focused on one portion of the landing gear. It got up another one and hid inside in this space of time.
      As for the controls inside the airlock, I can understand confusion, but one can only assume the airlock can also be used to go directly into space to inspect the ships hull. Obviously in a situation like that they would close the door at the top before opening it to the vacuum of space (similar to when the Dropship leaves the Sulaco at the beginning of the movie.
      And of course the part where Ripley holds on to the railing while the powerloader and Queen are sucked out into space.
      First of all the Queen was only grabbed onto her while getting pulled into space for a brief while, I'd say if Ripley's shoe hadn't of come off Ripley would have eventually fallen with her.
      It's not like the Queen is pulling her with her power, it's just her weight. It's not beyond reason that she could hold her own for a mere 15 seconds or so.
      Why would Ripley be pulled into space as well? She has a solid thing to grip onto.
      And don't give "The Great Vacuum of Space" any credit here. It's not Space doing the work, it's the air being pulled in to fill the vacuum.
      So basically Hurricane Winds.
      I'd say someone would still be able to do something as simple as climbing a ladder even if there's a whole lotta air blowing in their face.
      I don't have a problem with you or anything so please don't make this aggressive, I'm just trying to logically explain these issues.

    • @tyrantgregcagkaiju71
      @tyrantgregcagkaiju71 10 лет назад +8

      You're probably right about a few things. It's just that I would've taken time to use at least one of those grenades on the queen, just to make sure I'll be safe. You never know what'll happen if something like that manages to free itself.
      But then there was also the first action sequence in the compound. Ripley finds out what kind of rounds the Smartguns use and realize it'll destroy the place if the marines aren't careful. So, they tell them to eject all their magazines, but never explain WHY they can't use them there. That doesn't seem like very wise instructions for marines. Vasquez could've possibly killed everyone, if she shot a machine powering the compound. And she does wind up being the cause of the death of one marine by shooting a neraby alien with it. That wouldn't have happened, if she took out her ammo.
      And when Gorman tells the marines to pull out, he decides, each time as he repaeats himself, to give out the instructions as long as possible. He could've easily summed it up with: "Cease fire and fall back!" As the captain was listening to his long instructions, he gets distracted and is attacked by an alien.

    - chuckles -
    There's so much wrong with that vacuum scene. Vacuum doesn't have any force; the air rushing out is only about fourteen pounds pounds per square inch, and it maintains that for however long the ship cares to keep pressurizing the room in question before it shuts off the environmental control so it can maintain pressure in the rest of the ship; a space fairing vessel (read, military) which can't do this on it's own is a poorly built hunk of tin. As long as you're able to do a chin-up, you can withstand the force of depressurization; Ripley's arm wouldn't have broke, her other hand would have let go first; there was a much higher likelihood of the debris knocking her out, but again, she was the one in the ventury, the rest of the room wouldn't have had the forces she was under, so empty cardboard boxes.
    I find it truly amusing though, that the movie had a manual switch in the danger zone; and that it pulled down to open, and pushed UP to close. Ahhh movie land and physics, they're in different universes.

    As much as I'm sure it's been said nineteen billion times: Holding onto something against the air leaving the ship should not actually have been very difficult. Even if you assume the ship had a LOT of air to vent (thus the decompression lasting for several minutes) you're still only talking about 1atm of pressure escaping at some rate that's steadily declining. They even have the advantage of avoiding explosive decompression by opening the hatch gradually, so the initial spike wouldn't be awful. It's effectively just a windstorm, so I think it's best to think of it like the kind of hurricane winds that can knock people around but if you've got a solid grip on something you're more in danger from flying debris than of flying away (or losing your gripping limb).
    Ripley's ability to hold on while supporting the mass of the queen is the real issue with that scene in my mind, but then we don't know how much the queen weighs or any of the other forces involved. I always thought Ripley's arm should have been broken and probably dislocated, but it seemed plausible that she wasn't ripped apart. Humans are pretty good at resisting that type of linear force, especially if your muscles are already braced so you don't immediately dislocate all your joints.

    Since all that pressure difference can only be relieved trough the
    airlock, it effectively would become an wind channel. The force applied
    on Ripley is not a matter of the force applied on the hull of the ship
    by the pressure difference, but by the wind speed and density of the moving air passing trough the airlock.

      The aliens are not affected by the vacuum of space and can survive in it, they don't necessarily need to breathe air. Remember, at the end of the first movie, the alien also tried to climb in the engine of the escape pod, Ripley had to kill it by firing the engines, otherwise it would have just hanged there forever. In 'Alien Isolation' are some sequences too where u can see active aliens in outer space at Sevastopol Station ...

      Steven Cohen Hicks is canonically alive, thanks to the god awful Aliens: Colonial Marines. It was written terribly, I literally came up with something better in ten minutes that explains both how he's alive and makes Alien 3 make sense (which is what they claimed about Colonial Marines, but that wasn't true) but it doesn't matter how terrible it is, because Fox wrote off on it and made it canon.

    • @stevencohen624
      @stevencohen624 9 лет назад

      IllCaesar From what I've seen Aliens: Colonial Marines does indeed look terrible. It asks us to accept certain things that don't make sense. For instance, in Aliens we saw Hicks get splashed with acidic blood, blood that could eat through several levels of a large ship. He could barely move. He was in no condition to walk, never mind go on another mission. Also, there is no way that colony could have withstood a nuclear explosion.
      You mentioned that you came up with something better. Is it on Fanfiction.com? I'd be interested in reading it. :)

    • @QwertyCaesar
      @QwertyCaesar 9 лет назад

      Steven Cohen Eh I ended up throwing it away, but it wasn't difficult to come up with somethign that made more sense. You know htat prison colony that Ripley ended up at? Well in the story WeyYu ejected Ripley and Newt to there with a queen facehugger in the hopes of it being turne into a hive. The colony is unarmed, after all, shouldn't be much of a problem for one or two xenomorphs. This was after they woke Hicks, the lone surviving military personnel, from cryosleep for the sake of interrogation. Being an evil heartless corporation, they replaced Hicks in the pod with some redshirt that nobody would miss and made sure that his corpse would be unidentifiable prior to being jettisoned, that in case Newt or Ripley survived the crash that there would be no suspicion. Hicks of course would be kept around by the company for the sake of interrogation, as his information would be valuable while he's low risk to keep around - a crippled man isn't able to put up much of a fight, after all. This explains Hicks being missing without a handwave, it explains why the egg was present in Alien 3, why the company was so quick to respond in Alien 3, it explains how it gives more meaning to the events of Alien 3 and Ripley's sacrifice, and it took about ten minutes to come up with it. Its not Shakespeare, but what I metaphorically wrote on a napkin makes more sense than what made the final cut. Honestly I think it would've been better if they weren't trying to save Hicks, but I kept with that intention, as Fox probably wanted that specifically. Again, not Shakespeare, but a hell of a lot better than what we got.
      There was more regarding stuff specifically in the game, such as after the prison colony failed to become an alien nest, the company decided to use the Sulaco as a new alien nest, which explains both their presence there and the alien hive without much contrivance. After all, an isolated ship isn't a bad spot to set up hive, as the xenomorphs can't exactly escape the confines. The Sephora is just more cattle to the slaughter for the company, which is why they didn't worry about the USMC sending in reinforcements and try to do anything to move the ship. Mostly stuff like that. I can't remember it all now.
      I'm not much of a writer, but all of this stuff was basically just ways I could rewrite the assets that were already there in the game so it would've made more sense - basically the most simply stuff one could've done. The game still would've been crap because its a bad game, but at least the canon left with us wouldn't be god awful. Honestly I think that is the worst part of it - not just how irredemably bad the game is in itself, but the fact that the terrible story is canon. If it weren't canon, I don't think people would've been as upset with it as they were, myself included (pre-ordered the game)

All the items inside the building really would have only experienced hurricane force winds, which may have caused damage, but which you can resist just by holding on to something.

    So let me get this straight, the xenomorph queen and the predator fell in love, did not see that coming.

    I'm sure I'm 13 years late, but still have to point out that it wouldn't be too crazy hard to hold on against decompression like that. And it likely wouldn't be able to throw people out. Strong winds, sure, but not arm ripping.

    I gotta say, picturing Newt with that bigass gun in the actual film shooting F00k outta the queen is just adorable and funny ;]

      No, they took a swing at Avatar. Though it easily applies to the stupidity that is deadspace 2 and 3.

    You know that space doesn't suck you out, right? You're blown by the air rushing out of the cabin, so the force comes from how big the compartment you're in is, not how big the vacuum is. One small compartment of air isn't honestly that much wind.
