I dont care for the neodyme but I like everything else. Well done BMW. Wasn’t sure where you were going with design over the past couple of years but its starting to come together nicely!
XM hugs my soul. Love the Cape York Green or Urban Green!
I agree 100% with you that a car this expensive needs a bigger battery pack, but that also means adding more weight to an unnecessary overweight vehicle. Being a dedicated ///M, why not compensate weight by adding more carbon? Those who will buy these, they can afford another $10-20K.
Making a plug in with 100 mile range is pretty wasteful. Just think, if you are planning to only use electricity and never plan to use gas at all, you are essentially carrying around 500-800 pounds of dead weight (the gas engine). Stagnant fuel will be burned up automatically regardless if people use it. I think 50 miles of EV range is perfect for plug ins. There has to be some balance. I still think range extenders like the i3 is a great option.
If a bought this car i would most certainly replace the hood and some other areas with carbon fiber, maybe the upcoming XM will come with better battery
I honestly don’t think there’s room to package the battery required for 100 mile range. A car this heavy is going to do maybe 2 mi./ kilowatt hour so we’re talking a battery pack with a usable capacity of 50 kWh whereas a car like the Hyundai ionic 5 has 77 kWh and it’s a full EV and that battery takes the entire floor pan where this car needs, driveshaft transmissions, exhaust, fuel tank, etc. And what is probably an extra 300 or 400 pounds of batteries pushing it over 7000 pounds which then just makes it less efficient and you need a bigger battery and this brings you into a never ending cycle, see Hummer EV.
Electric cars are like the propeller driven planes of the 1940s-Bigger batteries means more weight, which means an increasing diminishing return in performance and range. E.V.'s will be difficult to justify until a paradigm shift in batteries occur similar from prop planes to jets. Batteries will need to be lighter, smaller, more energy dense and cost justified with real world range of at least 500 miles and full charging times of 15 minutes for wide spread adoption. The average driver doesn't need 600 h.p. in a 7,000 lb car. They need 300 or so H.P. in a functional, reliable , easy to live with car that costs the same as a comparable ICE vehicle.
@@weirdshibainu I totally agree with you. A battery pack should not weigh 5-700 kgs and provide a 300 mi range. EVs will be equal to ICE vehicles when the combined weight of the electric motor and the battery pack will be the same as the ICE+fuel tank+transmission+exhaust system. Shorter charging times are coming, Porsche's second generation electric cars will supposedly decrease charging times from 22 to 15 minutes. Still, I have the feeling that we are trying to build a very large ladder to reach the Moon. I plan on keeping my Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 for 10 more years and reevaluate EVs in 2032.
@@tamasszabo8824 "that we are trying to build a very large ladder to reach the Moon"--an excellent metaphor. I'd own an e.v. when the numbers work and hopefully they do, but as of now, the tech in immature. I'd keep the Cayman even after 2032. Who knows, in 40 years, it could be a museum piece.
It's stunning!
this new xm suv is trully amazing only flaw is of course weight good video.
Totally agree!
Okay, I actually like the design of this SUV even over the similarly designed X7. I don’t know why anyone would want or need a full up M car as a large SUV, but obviously BMW has done their research and they believe that there’s a market for it. I’m not the demographic for this particular model, but I know I will see a bunch of these in the next year around my Houston area suburb.
Most beautiful BMW ever!!!
This thing is ridiculous but I'm sure will sell like crazy.
Bmw is doing it right! I don't want to go full electric just yet. I prefer a Sporty Hybrid/plug-in Hybrid.
Like you Motoman, I'm not an SUV lover at all! But I find this thing intriguing! I love the interior. I'll reserve judgment on the exterior design till I've seen more of it, as I've found I've changed my mind on the looks of some other vehicles over time. Didn't think much of it at first, but beginning to warm to it.
Two reservations: 1) the colossal weight of thing and 2) why did BMW make the second only dedicated M model in the M-Division's history (after the seminal M1) a large super-heavy SUV and not a proper sports car?
Regarding point 2, I had the same reservation. Sadly, the answer is this: Because that's what sells now.
@@MotoManTV Yep! No argument there!...
It will sure get a lot of attention without a doubt ohh
it wont get a bigger battery pack because in europe normal driving licenses are limited to 3,5 tons max weight
Finally a dual clutches in a bmw instead of a torque converter, its just a shame that its fitted to a house on wheels. 🙄
While they are the reference standard on doing Torque Converters in performance cars, glad to see them branching out.
Love it
I love that
@motoman
Glad you got to the XM. I wanted to ask you:
What’s your opinion on the 644 hp and 590 lb ft of torque? Is there a reason they couldn’t use the current generation M5 engine which already produces 600 hp then add the e motor to it to make 700ish hp at least? I feel that the label red should be making closer to 800hp; especially given the weight.
I’ve been waiting to replace my 2019 M5 with the upcoming M5 (which obviously will have the same engine and e motor mix as the XM pls correct me if that’s not the case!) however I’m just not thrilled to find out that at the base level it’s only going to be a 50hp jump but a whole lot of extra weight.
Awaiting your answer! Out of all the automotive journalists I think you are the absolute best to address my question!
Thanks sir

We drive hard out here!
I was surprised that you loved this car!!
Great video!
Me too:)
Awesome car, looks great in and outside.
Can’t wait for the CS version of it lol
It will have level red version later.
4:14 someone is in looooooovvveee.
Let's call it lust:)
Design is always subjective, what I don't understand is that that engine is capable of much higher power output. Considering the weight of this car more power would definitely come in handy.
According to BMW XM Project manager it’s 3 inches shorter then X7 and 0.25 inches wider, slightly higher and sits lower.....
It should of at least had range equivalent to the X5 45e
🔥💥🔥
HD Buttercup is the name.
Thanks . . . had a brain fart there.
Would there be engine issues long term if you were only ever driving on electric range 95% of the time? I don't think a vehicle like this makes sense to have a battery big enough to do any meaningful electric only range, it would be sort of a waste of the performance engine and just add a ton of weight and cost.
I can't agree that it's a good looking car. However, I totally agree with you about the range. For that price, 50 km of range is not acceptable.
At that price, and at that weight, you might as well just go full hog, and put a larger battery pack in it. Hell. Instead of making the structure out of steel, or aluminum, why not just make more of the structure out of CRP? They're doing that already with the iX.
You forgot to show us the lift gate storage…oh, bmw had to take it for an oil change after the thirty mile electric range ran out- right. 🙄
I love everything about this car. It’s just outrageous. We more of that in car manufacturers. Things have been too safe.
Lotus Eletre R
They call this a a standalone M car and cap the top speed at 160mph? That's laughable🤣. An X6M or M8 Comp can top 180mph and have essentially the same hp/torque rating as this car. They should have at least matched this. No reason to choose this over an
X6M Comp which has essentially the same power but costs much less
The only real market for this car are US entrepreneurs seeking a 25k write off based upon the over 6,000 pound GW IRS guidelines.
Hybrid don’t make sense to me, 30 ml on battery witch creates more weight + a combustion engine #moreweight.
Beautiful design, but yet another example of German unobtainium.
I love the look, it's ugly in the way an Aventador is ugly: It will elicit mesmerized expletive-filled reactions when people see it parked or pull up. But she's not powerful enough. Mercedes' C63s/GLC63s has 680hp and 725lb/ft for half the price (and 3.4 second 0-60). The output of the XM is borderline embarrassing by comparison. They should have aimed at matching the acceleration of the Urus/Bentayga/RSQ8 set with such a high price point
ALPINA XB7
This will be the first car in history that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and beyond buyer will each be successively wealthier than the previous one. They'll have to be to keep it on the road. By the time you see this at the "We Finance Here" car lot, the buyers will be billionaires only. BMW will probably just send these to the crusher after getting them back in 3 or 4 years after they are first leased.
I don't think I'll ever get it.
1. oversized, i'm not a megalomaniac.
2. overweight, takes its toll on tyres, suspension, brakes and road itself
3. i wonder what we'll do with all the materials of its battery once it's done
4. it's ugly. you can disagree, but this is just another ugly suv in my book.
I guess it must be just me, that I'd rather drive an "old" M2 or M3 rather than this monstrosity...
I agree with everything except #1. Not only do you not need to be a megalomaniac to want a car with some utility, but its not even that big.
@@cwx8 You do realize it's over 5m long and over 2m wide? How is that not a big car?
Also, what utility do you get with that ridiculous range?
Sorry, I thought you said 6600lb?
Plastic oil pan in a 6600lb vehicle... I can see that shattering on the streets of Astoria.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry.... "off the plantation"? Are you serious?
this is not comparible in any way to urus you do not even consider while buying an urus urus changed my life the moment i got behinf the wheel best car in the world
Basically you’ve got an Audi not a Lambo!
@@joebloggs4191 if you can afford to drive it u won’t be saying that its just a poor man constellation
@@Tony-hj7bm Not saying it's a poor man's car since well the Audi it's based on also isn't a poor man's car but it is still basically an Audi just re-engineered a little. I wouldn't be driving a Urus because I don't like SUVs would much rather have the Hurrucan Aventador etc. but if I was going down that path I wouldn't have a Lambo, I'd have a Ferrari. This XM though is the only SUV that I actually think I would (funds permitting) add to my fleet, well this and the new Purosangre.
@@joebloggs4191 I'm saying that saying urus is rsq8 is poor man constellation its not fell the same they re very much different and this XM is just bogus
@@Tony-hj7bm How is the XM just bogus?
It’s a miss for me on various different levels. The cheap looking horizontal display screen is such a let down in design I can’t believe it was authorized. The interior looks like they took cues from an 80’s Cadillac??? One gimmick after another for how much did you say??? Hahahaha BMW must be laughing all the way to the bank!
BMW got like a hundred models now smh
I don't care what kind of various lights that BMW spent days deciding on the exact locations to place the lights, it's still hideous. Also even the so called label red version will be slower than the current X5M COMPETITION. I also wouldn't care if it was the same price as the X5M, it's a no sale for me.
BMW is just throwing crap styling on the wall to see what might stick.
The interior looks awesome and the engineering is fantastic. But, for me the exterior is just plain fugly. Is this like those ugly dogs... so ugly they are cute?
PLASTIC SUMP? 😂
I sat in one of these. It's smaller inside than an X5, and significantly more expensive, which is a fail in my book.
ok well dont sit in any ferraris or porsches then going by ur "standards"....
30 miles of range is criminal
The Urus is the only car my wife likes. I like a lot of cars but this one. It looks like a Lexus on steroids.
Hmm, this is incredibly exotic. I hate it
I hate the exterior , love the interior !
Still too expensive for an EV SUV IMHO.
I'd get a Lambo Urus instead , until the electric range is much larger.
It's ugly to me. But the future isn't getting prettier.
BMW should fire their designer team. Horrible car
this car is absolutely disgusting
