Watching this in August 2021. One week after Robin's passing, and Gurney left us a little over a year after Robin filmed this. Merely two weeks before Robin left us, Bob Jenkins passed. Bobby Unser also went to the great racetrack in the sky a few months ago. Legendary titans of motorsport who survived what was the deadliest but also one of the most creative for car design are leaving us. As I go through at watch this series of Robin telling stories of these amazing characters, I'm glad he did so. Wish he was still around to continue doing it and share as much of these stories as possible. He was a walking historian, not only because he had a giant love of the sport, but because he lived through much of it and became good friends with many of these legends throughout his career. There are no replacements for these guys. Cherish them while the remainder of that generation are still with us. They are definitely a different breed.
Damn ! I have tears in my eye over watching this ! Two of many of my absolute favorite people in the World ! i know that you two are upstairs having one helluva chat ! RIP
I grew up 60 miles from Indy. Went every year to carb day, last day of qualifying & the race. Met Dan in CA at AAR when Tom Sneva drove for him. Very engaging man and one of America's greatest!
Robin - Great watching this! I don't know why I remembered this but, Kimi Raikkonen also entered Formula 1 with only 23 races under his belt. But, Kimi's experience was limited to junior open wheel races. Obviously Peter Sauber recognized in Kimi what Enzo Ferrari saw in Dan . . . Pure natural talent.
One tidbit of history on Dan the Man................he was born in NY long island and before the family moved to Cali he first races asphalt modifieds on short tracks.
Don't quiteknow where to begin, thanks for your insight, your knowledge of, and your history of our heroes Robin ! From one racer to another my hat's off to you ! Thank you again !
To be the "man", you gotta beat the "man"... I think that's where that saying got started... He's the best American race car drive in our history. RIP...
Thank you for posting this. When are you going to do profiles on Roger McCluskey,Lloyd Ruby,Jerry Grant,Greg Weld,Bill Vukovich,Jr.,and George Snider? Throw in Carrol Shelby.
On a 'What if' note, if the universe had evolved differently, one of Dan Gurney or John Surtees would have been the 1966 world champion rather than Jack Brabham. I believe that Jack Brabham was thinking of retiring if Dan had continued to drive for Brabham after 1965. Most cars of the first year of the 3-liter formula were very unreliable, whereas the Brabham-Repcos were not that fast, but boy, they were reliable. So Dan could have been the world champ if he had stayed with Brabham. However, Ferrari also had a very good car in 1966. If John Surtees had not gotten really pissed off with Ferrari politics and had stayed with Ferrari, there was a good chance he could have been the world champ. However, he quit Ferrari after the 1966 Belgian Grand Prix and that was that.
Yes, the key thing I’ll always remember about Dan is that he did everything his way.
Rest in Peace Dan and Robin!!
This was so good! We are honored to be caretakers of his Spa winning eagle and the Indy 500 winner that Bobby Unser drove.
I'm glad that you guys have that amazing Car and would to see it at Naples where I live about 2 Hours from there Revs

1962 - Indy 500 : he drove the Mickey Thomson Spl. a modern, rear engined car
I can't believe you haven't done a story about the legend Ziggy Snider yet.
RIP
You talked about all the eagles except the greatest one. The four banger Toyota mk3.
I never met Dan Gurney but I am still bothered by the fact that he died. It means my heroes are mortal.
He owned Riverside in a Stock Car .
