    Of all the gardeners I follow, you and quite a few others, mulch is the answer! I always felt that I had too much space to mulch effectively, but I'm spending the winter gathering leaves and wood chips to mulch as much as I can. If my giant pumpkin weights go up I'll have all of you to thank for it. Mulch and no-till, let the soil heal and regulate itself.

    Right now I'm laying down many organic layers in my no-till lasagna gardening. I am layering fresh leaves, alpaca manure from a friend, compost, and wood chips dropped off from a couple of local chipping companies. It'll all create a very alive, healthy, no-till soil come spring! A lot of upfront work as I have a very large garden, but it'll give me so much in return as I won't hardly need to weed and watering will be very minimal 😘

    Thanks for the video.
    I love wild flowers, too. It's so amazing to see what comes up, and then to see the patch change year over year. I have one bed that looks different every year as the perrenials start to dominate.
    It's fun to over-seed an existing patch, too. A few years ago I had an area of annual poppies into which I sowed some perrenial Icelandic poppy seeds from a neighbor down the alley. The next spring the Icelandics, which I had forgotten about, were there just waiting to burst into bloom. The spot is now pure Icelandic yellow, red and orange.

    HI Cali, nice prep demonstration, though I do have some questions. I'd like to plant an acre or more of wildflower seeds. Can I mow it down close, till it under and then spread the seeds and roll them in? We generally cover them with fresh grass clippings because they stick to the soil and hold moisture. My second question is, can I do this in the fall and have them germinate in spring on their own, or do I need to wait until spring and do this planting/seeding process then? Thanks so much in advance :)

    I was worried it might have been too early, but we are just know getting our first frost since last Feb!! So i followed you lead and planted them in bulk!!! How much trifecta do you think you will need for a season???Getting ready to order more. i hope mine garden will turn out half as beautiful as yours last year!!!

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  8 лет назад

      +Kristy Dooley You will be loving that you did this once the weather warms up even just a tad! Mine are already starting to poke through the soil - it will be fun to have super early flowers. Depending on the seed mix you got, once they get established, they are pretty hardy, and many of them will reseed year after year. Hard to say on the Trifecta for the whole season - I might have used 4 packages last summer. It really depends on the size of your garden, and what you are growing. Container plants will need more, because the water and nutrients drain from them much quicker. It's pretty much the only fertilizer I use now. I've seen such great results, and really love the stuff! Let me know how your flowers do!

    If that's bermuda grass (it's considered very invasive and a weed in some regions), you'll need to keep plucking them every month from the spring until fall until they disappear. And it will take many years. They will out-compete and suffocate your flowers. The rhizomes are stubborn. Unfortunately back when they were building our hometown (Tulsa) they decided to use bermuda as the grass in everyones yard so it makes it near impossible for anyone to urban garden here. unless you're on the outskirts of town.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  8 лет назад

      Sorry it's been so stubborn for your community. I have already been working on this grass for a few years now, but have been successful getting some things to grow in place of it on several areas of my yard. Over the summer I had sunflowers and zinnias where that stubborn grass is in this video. As soon as those flowers died, and we got a little rain, grass crept it's way back in. I am hoping the windflowers get established and the grass goes by by. It's nasty stuff! thx for watching!

    I was thinking of putting out some wild flowers in my yard. I was not sure if i should try to just have 1 section of wildflowers or if i should try to put the seeds all over the yard. I'm afraid if i put them all over my grass that it would look funny. What do you think?

      +Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby Its so beautiful to have a carpet of color in your garden! But I would definitely recommend sticking to the border of the garden - as most wildflowers are quite tall and might look funny all over your yard. Let me know how it goes!

      +CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY will i start to have a caterpillar issue with all the butterfly that come or do they only eat plants like milkweed etc?

      +Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby Good question - I had a caterpillar issue this year - those little green ones on my kale and lettuce. These flowers are supposed to attract the beautiful kind of butterflies. Lets hope so! I need all the pollinators I can get in my garden - bees too!

      +CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Oh yes the bees live my limited amount of garden flowers i have :) but they are always on the flowers. I think my yard has a lot of weed flowers the attract the bees then they find my garden :) whatever works i guess :)

    The weeds and grass are going to sprout first and shade out your flowers which take about 30 days to germinate.

    You said you were going to pull up weeds by the roots--that looks like Bermuda grass, which does NOT come out just by pulling. If it IS bermuda, I guarantee your flower bed ended up back where you started, covered by invasive Bermuda. To eliminate it, you need to dig up the underground rhizomes, a very labor-intensive task.

    I'm going check my hummingbird feeder make sure its not frozen so the little guys can feed.
    check on my venus fly traps as they need a few months of cold every year or will not live.
    I'n other words i would take weeding over freezing ;)

    Let's see....what to do outside this week in zone 4a...hmmm...hmmm...I know!!!! STAY INSIDE!!! It was -4 today, tomorrow is supposed to be -17 and we are not going to get above zero until Wednesday....and then it'll be +2. LOL, quit rubbing your warm weather in our faces, will ya'! We can't even snuggle together to get warm because a certain wife hogs all the blankets 'cuz her feet are cold! It's so cold even ice melt won't work! BUT... the sun dogs are so beautiful; the sun columns are stunning; the air so crisp and clean it makes you glad to be alive! Just be sure to plug in the engineblock heater and wear sunglasses 'cuz the sun reflecting off the snow is so bright. Spring will get here by 4th of July for sure...(we hope)
    Kim, thanks for the videos. I sincerely hope every wild flower seed sprouts and blooms for you. You deserve it!

      +Chris Dahl Hi Chris, ha, ha, sounds like a good activity is definitely going to be stay inside for you. I wouldn't even survive there. Sounds like there are beautiful things there though that you do enjoy! Maybe you can do some inside growing? Hope spring comes early for you and you are able to get some flowers planted before the 4th of July!

    Dang! I got the trivia question wrong by thinking 'water'. Oh well, I should have known better. Guess I better go shovel some snow to clear my head. And it's funny how different we all are - one commentor said don't rub the warm weather in our faces but I see it as just the opposite - a little micro vacation to a warmer climate and a break from the zero degree temps. Even if only for a moment... Thanks kids! :)

    That isn't weeds - that is invasive crab grass and it takes over, chokes out everything. No amount of wildflowers will prevent the crabgrass from returning. I bet the crabgrass returned!
