- Did you know that this S&S Worldwide conversion of the former Premier Rides BuzzSaw Falls water coaster uses a compressed air launch that goes from 0-53 mph (85 km/h) in 2.8 seconds, but the actual top speed is 64 mph (103 km/h)? Like all the coasters at Silver Dollar City that take full advantage of the surrounding terrain, this one has a 110 foot (33.5m) drop in spite of being 98 feet (30m) tall.

It has to be mentioned that this ride is weird as it is for a few reasons.
Powder Keg used to be a water coaster. Along with the station building, the final helix (where the track changes style from center-spine to crossbars) and lift hill were retained from Buzzsaw Falls. In fact, one of Buzzsaw Falls' boats sticks out of the station roof. The lift hill functions to save money on track, add extra height for the final turn, and as a block section: once one train has cleared the lift hill, the other can launch.
The transfer track allowed for fitting the coaster in the existing space and it gives the launch additional safety in the case of a rollback. The vertical section of track before the launch isn't cosmetic. I'm guessing the spike allows for the train to be slowed down more gradually in the case of a rollback. Whereas a LIM/LSM launch coaster can use the motors to slow down the train, and an Intamin accelerator like Top Thrill Dragster has retractable magnetic brakes all along the launch track, Powder Keg has very few brakes along the launch track. This is a very short distance to decelerate from 50 mph. The transfer track also allows a train to load while the next one launches. In the case of a rollback, a train has zero chance of rolling back into the station.
It cannot be denied how strange this coaster is, though. Silver Dollar City has a thing for "experimental" rides. Powder Keg was S&S's first air-launched coaster ever, and since Hypersonic XLC was dismantled in 2001 it's the only air-launched coaster in the US--until Maxx Force opens.

@@Gigidag77 Actually, that concrete basin used to be part of a water feature that Powder Keg had briefly after it's conversion. You can probably still find photos of it online. It used to be painted blue and there was another one on the left side of the track and they were both filled with water. I'm not entirely sure why it was removed but I know that this ride is very sensitive to precipitation so it probably has something to do with that.
Powder Keg also wasn't the first air launch coaster, Hypersonic XLC was
One of the most underrated coasters. Super intense launch, fun turns, and decent airtime plus it’s glossy smooth. Most people say it’s not that good.

I didn’t expect much, honestly went into thinking it would be more like a family coaster but was definitely proven wrong. The launch was way more intense that I imagined and I thought I was going to be shot out of that top hat. Awesome unique underrated ride. Have you ridden time traveler yet?

You are so right! From the first time I rode this year's ago it became my favorite! I know wildfire/ outlaw run is everyone's favorite but it has gotten unessisarily forcefully jolting!!

I love that it starts with a launch and then has a lift at the end, which btw is followed by a single down-spiral and then the ride ends XD
I suspect this was done because of the terrain and block sections. The lift hill was to get the train back to the station but it sucks to end on that so they added the helix and the drop. They don't want a launch for that because it's too much speed and this allows them a block section without brakes
@@joseeinthewild they did it because the lift hill and drop where all ready there when it was a premiere rides water coaster before the converted it to an sns air lunched coaster is you look carefully right before the lift hill at 1:26 you can see where the track switches form the sns to premier track, they where just using what was all ready there to Lengthen the ride

This is hands down my favorite rollercoaster. Sure, it might not have inversions or high intensity, but it has some amazing floater airtime and smooth turns. It's a lot of fun.

I rode this for the first time last Saturday. I didn't expect much because it doesn't really get much love from the coaster community. I thought it was great & highly underrated.
also rode this coaster today. absolutely terrifying i do not ride coasters often but wanted to try them all today. this ride cannot be described. no matter how many times you watch this video or watch your friends get launched from the viewing platform it’s will never prepare you for the intensity it brings. one piece of a real solid advice for when riding this, keep your head back at all times. this coaster is fast. not like fast but FAST. the initial straight away is gut twisting. that drop does not look that bad uptick it’s on your horizon. this coaster is all speed and it your head is not where it’s supposed to be you will most likely get a minor case of whiplash or other injury. i appreciate this coaster for the simple design. it was look boring and unexciting but the pure speed it brings is unparalleled to i have experienced. 10/10 would ride again multiple times.
You will not get a injury or whiplash if you don’t keep your head back I’ve been on way more intense launch coasters. Did you ride outlaw run or time traveler in the same park because those are far better rides than this
This looks like a great way to get young coaster enthusiasts in the making a feel of bigger and faster coasters. even with that, its history makes the ride unique. This is a awesome ride and I'll totally ride it whenever I go to Silver Dollar City.

I put my 10 yr old on it thinking the same thing... that was nearly 7 years ago. She loved roller coasters at the time, but after riding it I was horrified I put my child on it. It is MUCH more brutal than this "peaceful" video looks. 🤣🤣
A lot of fun, but I would have never put my 10 yr old on it had I known how fast that thing REALLY goes!
Yeahhh... This is one of the "craziest" coasters at SDC. Probably my least fave of all.
From that launch on, it's non stop and there is never really time to prepare like traditional coasters that slowly "click-clack" up to the big drop. You sit and watch the red, yellow, yellow, green light and you're tensed up from there!
It's short in time, but fast in everything else.
Just rode this for the first time today with a friend and loved it! The launch is extremely fast, and the rest of the ride definitely has some intense moments! I enjoyed it so much that I rode it a second time!
Just rode this a few days ago for the first time. Wow this was a thrill. I thought it was going to be a lightweight. The negative G is unlike any other coaster I've been on. Only problem is they were only operating a single train. So the line was about 1.5 hr. Worth it for sure.

Just rode it for the first time an hour ago in the pitch black night sky. The feeling going over the from launch up over the hump into the black sky was insane. What a rush.

i like the effects that happen on the other side of the launch building although there is a loud boom just before the train gets launched

The second lift only enables one extra element. If the initial launch was faster the lift could be eliminated. The site must really not have space for a faster launch.
just make it more powerful... 2.8 seconds is a lot of time spent on the launch track. No need of more space
@@HahnValentin the speed after launch is the problem. Either the g-forces are too much, or the elements need to be stretched out to adjust for the speed, and maybe the site doesn't have enough space for that.
flinx They reused the lift hill and the turn before the lift hill from the old Buzzsaw Falls ride, probably to save money
@@LUNCHMONEY4numbers I feel like if they had made the turn before the lift a bit tighter and followed it up with a couple of airtime hills that the train could have easily made it to the brake run without the need of a lift hill that is only followed by Helix. It would probably even make it back with the turn as is, it has plenty of speed left when it hits the MCBR / bottom of the lift. It kinda feels as if they only used the old lift structure to get a additional block section into the coaster.
Yeah that second chain lift for such a short ending really seems to mess up the flow of it. A Themed chain lift to get back to the station is less disappointing than a just a few more moments of ride time. The second half should have been just as long as the first to make it more satisfying.
I tried riding Powder Keg with my best friend and her little sister today while we were at Silver Dollar City.. It did not go well for me. I've always had a fear of roller coasters but the only one I can really handle without freaking out is Thunderation. Powder Keg had me sobbing before it took off. Thank God the people in front of me didn't judge me for it. Thank you to whoever those kind ladies were by the way. I ended up closing my eyes the entire time.. And I think I worried one of the operators while I was getting off (I was still crying a little)..

It is if you go on a week day during their Christmas in midtown event and you ride this at night you get a great veiw of all the lights in the park from the top of the hill
I hear a lot of people say that this ride is super awkward, but it’s honestly a really good ride and the launch is definitely more intense than most others considering it’s an S&S. Also you get wild airtime.
The zero G’s you feel going over that first hill is the scariest. You literally feel like you’re going to fly off the tracks.

This video doesn’t do the ride justice I got of it like 3 hours ago and the launch,launched my brother,s beanie off. also we can’t forget about the other to amazing coasters there ,Wildfire and Outlaw run.
I’ve only been on a few roller coasters (im 13) it’s not bc im scared on the rides it’s just I haven’t been on many and my anxiety getting on them is really bad- I’ve so far (out of the 4 at silver dollar city) road this and time traveler. I was gonna ride wildfire but my anxiety couldn’t get me on it and then after I rode the others it closed- I think I like roller coasters a lot I just can’t get myself on them. I loved this ride so much and the launch was my favorite part.

I’m actually weirdly afraid of alarm sounds so I would be terrified before that launch between it’s power and the alarm sound
My 6yr old niece was scared to ride it the first time we went and after I showed her this she is now no longer afraid and is more than excited to ride it with me.
Powder Keg is an interesting coaster. Silver Dollar City has a lot of interesting rides, but this one is a near classic. I think I might go there next year.
I rode this ride as my second ride and it was almost like riding another coaster in Colorado where I’m from. I’ll say it’s my favorite ride.

Awesome video! This is my favorite coaster at SDC. I love the view from the top, but the takeoff is my favorite part. I do a lot of Branson videos for my channel. The family friendly atmosphere is what I like most about the area.

In my opinion, this is the best ride here. It’s not too jerky and fast but boy does that launch just send adrenaline right through you. The 2nd drop is also a lot worse than the first drop which surprised me
outlaw run is the best. powder keg is awesome though

I love Powder Keg so much, it was my first coaster with loops or spirals. I remember back when I rode it for the first time they would play dialog over the load-speaker right before the ride actually starts and takes you to the light. I wonder why they eventually cut that?
Haven't been to SDC in YEARS, might go next year though! Really miss Powder Keg and Thunderation!

I thought this was the next ride above thunderation (I was wrong) if you want to go on a big ride at silver dollar city I would say go on wildfire first then powder keg. loved the ride tho I do highly recommend this ride if you are prepared. Also keep your eye’s open on all the ride’s at silver dollar city it’s beautiful.
If that final helix was a double helix this would unironically be a perfect ride

Right before closing time on a Thursday with a 70% chance of rain, it had a station wait!
This ride isnt for first timers this was my 3th rollercoster ever on the same day, the beggining is so quick and the up and down part and basically the whole this is scary. Camera doesn't do it justice
While u was getting in the ride the guy helping with the seat belts saw me put my phone in my pocket and told me to take it out bc the launch of the ride calls the police because it detects a car crash, it was then when I noticed how bad it was actually gonna be

Fun fact: the seats on this ride are amplifiers if you need to break wind. I know that now. In my defense the crammed that lap bar a bit tight. Something had to give. Btw this video doesn’t do the ride justice. I mean that in the best way.

Tbh it looks so fun but the post lift hill section could have been much better. You have this incredible launch and layout, then approach the lift hill which is followed by a drop & turn. They could have added so much to the final bit but nvm it looks so much fun!!!

My parents are extremely scared of roller coasters and will only ride the family coaster with me when we go to parks. How do i make them not scared of roller coasters at all like me and roller coasters don't give me any adrenaline anymore and my intensity tolerance is way too high. Can you help me with this so rollercoasters are thrilling again? And when I went on the Falcons Fury at BGT I got barely any adrenaline. And on the second and third rides I had a straight face (Please don't recommend another thrilling activity that isn't coasters.)
I wish I could redesign this..... great coaster however....with 2 or 3 added elements, this could be A++

The ride after the lift hill was so short. I wonder if they originally planned for it to be longer.
This coaster scared the shit out of my cousins and I when we were little. When we were like 12 or 13 my dad told us this was the safest one to go on and that it didnt go very fast. So my cousins and I ge tthe bright idea to take the front row. Big mistake. Well, the front row is the worst because of that stupid light. You see they programmed it so that it doesnt shoot off at the green light it gives you a couple of seconds to think about your life. So you are just sitting there dreading it and then out of no where BOOM. Also the tallest point on the coaster how you slowly get to the top of it you will feel the full force of the coaster. It is a lot of fun though. This one I just dislike because of the stupid light lmfao. However my cousin and I got the mega ride skip the line pass a couple of years ago and we kept count of how many times we rode the Wildfire. 32. 32 times. Crazy.
