One sentence opened my eyes: “Online shopping became a hobby for this generation” and it’s so true. The amount of time i used to spend on shopping apps for clothes and cosmetics… like a hobby. Hobbies should be something creative, sporty, relaxing, something that elevates you.
My wife has this habit and my mother actually had to block such platforms for herself due to a diagnosed shopping addiction. It's really pernicious! I personally only get things I need but I would be lying if I said it didn't take a great deal of effort to get to this point.
My hobby is gardening - I do often buy things such as plants and tools, but the main joy is from the grow and results from the activity such as flowers and vegetables, rather than the act of purchasing
@@icytransfer9127 yes, after that I was embarrassed to go back because everyone knew me without me realising and I eventually stopped going to other shops too.
I was exactly the same. Buying the latest make up trends. Shopping on my lunch etc. I really feel like Covid made me change my spending habits. Working from home with no make up on. Not spending excessively and seeing my savings build up really changed how I spend my money now. I think twice before purchasing anything and spend on more quality items than quantity
Same! I used to be a makeup collector but after Covid, I realised I didn't wear half of what I had and that I only needed one foundation bottle, one or two blushes, one eyeshadow palette and so on... It gave me lots of anxiety! Now I only have what I really wear and only buy it when I really need it. It made such a difference on my monthly budget! I now try to apply the same process to clothing and shoes 😊
I realized the same thing about PayPal. Yes, it’s convenient but it was too convenient and I didn’t know what each charges were for. I stopped this immediately after realizing it. I now go back to entering my card number. I don’t save them on any site because the convenience makes me purchase easily. If I have to get my card out, it takes time and during that time my mind is asking me if I really want to buy it. Also, this helped with the late night web shopping. I would have items in my cart but not check out because I didn’t want to go get my purse to get the card. Basically, I made it hard for myself and I don’t mind it one bit.
Hi Sophie, good advice! Here's my bad spending habit: when planning for a trip, I start buying clothes, shoes etc. and end up with WAAYY more stuff than I could possibly pack or wear! Anyone else do that? BTW Sophie, your eyelashes look so nice, what are you doing with them?
I don’t think you’ll be alone on this one Wendy!! I bet lots of us do it! You’re so kind about the eyelashes, I actually had lash extensions a few weeks ago and they make such a difference! Hugs to you xx
@@wendycoles-littlepage1919 omg yes lol 😂! Trips and events. It was like I was packing for a weeks worth of outfit changes in a day. Lol I think it was all the daydreaming I did in advance of a trip as to how I would ‘feel’ in the outfit, I guess my brain forgot that I already bought lots of outfits that already matched that feeling, and it’s really easy to forget what you already own when it’s all packed away. I think until I’m fortunate enough to have something as luxurious as a walk-in wardrobe, I now use trips as an opportunity to Spring clean and inventory... Although eyelash extensions seem like a great treat and less time spent on makeup on holiday 😊, especially with how cute they look
I really liked this video. I usually think a lot before buying anything and actually I have many things from Zara and H&M that are in really good condition because I search for things and fabrics that I know are going to last a bit longer, and I hand wash a lot of my clothes. Many people don’t have the budget to spend 400 dollars on a coat or a pair of pants but you can buy quality that is not luxury. A favorite of mine is Levi’s also Benetton.
Yes! I agree with your last point. Spending alittle more on better quality/long lasting clothing and avoiding fast fashion has also really upgraded my style and confidence. I'm excited to wake up and select an outfit from my carefully curated closet each day. 😊
Social media is and was a huge issue for beauty consumerism. Most people don’t wear nearly as much makeup as any “influencer”. It’s just not practical for most day to day situations. Also why does anyone need 18 blush colors?? Don’t people read on the packages that these things expire? Gross!!!
Same. I have always kept my phone until it dies, which is easily 3-4 years even though I do not treat it with any particular care. But even then I do not see the point of a designer phone case because my cases always get dirty, looking used etc - which I don’t mind because to me that is why one has a case, to protect the phone.
your words on this one really resonated with me. i bought the most beautiful pair of boots that were so comfortable. the price was right too. after one week of wearing them to the office, they fell apart. no more fast fashion for me.
So this is exactly why it’s good to talk about habits, debt and quality. I was in the same boat as you and most of us are at some stage. Even now I struggle but recently I spent a little more on lovely timeless tops that I can wear will jeans as an elevated outfit instead of just buying tshirts that never last more than a year. Both of these gorgeous long sleeve sheer tops were $130 each. I almost died at the price. But the 2 tops are stunning and fit my shape. It was a massive eye opener when making clothing purchases. I’ll have these tops for many years and finally dressing to my body type. I’m debt free now and will only buy what I need. I drink coffee at home these days and take a coffee in a bottle with me while I shop. Totally a game changer especially when you also take a coffee to work in the morning. You are so wise Sophie. This video is valuable information. 😊❤
ah the amount of money i spent on clothes in my early 20s!! Easily $600+ a month (living at home with no bills lol). I know why I went crazy (I was not allowed to buy or spend my own money as a teen cause i had to "save", so once i had control of my own money I went nuts). Dealing with that and FOMO has made a huge difference to how much I spend. I also have hoarding issues which makes not buying things difficult and its very difficult to de-clutter/sell items (been working on that for like 8yrs now). I have just built my first home on my own. Waiting to get keys in a week or two!! I was lucky to be privilaged and never be in debt for my spending. But its very important to analyse your mental state in regards to spending. Cause shopping can be just as much an addiction and be just as difficult to overcome.
For me, part of my saving money strategy this year has been forcing myself to not use food apps. No matter how many workaround discounts they have you're still spending a lot of money as they always come with the "when you spend" in the small print. I downloaded a few different apps that track your spending and started looking through bank statements and was shocked at how much money every month I'd been spending whilst wfh. I force myself to just walk to the stores during my lunch break and meal plan. Also, I relate heavily to working somewhere near a bunch of shops, it's worse for me as I have to walk past it to get home on the days I'm in the office. 😅 I've also not bought any clothes as I'm still losing weight and don't want to buy a bunch of cheap clothes that won't fit by the summer.
The food ordering is a real thing, we have made a conscious plan to only have a Deliveroo once a month. It’s easy to overspend on them!! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!xx
I love to watch someone who is well aware of their financial habits and spendings and are now trying to educate people in making better financial decisions. I too was once caught on impulse spending on games, tech-related items just because it look new and fancy
Thank you for this honest confession. We all have our weaknesses when it comes to shopping. Sometimes we buy because we feel uncomfortable and want to treat ourselves to something good.
Hahaha this is so me:- "I would never buy a Chanel cardholder for £400 because I'd think 'oh no that's way too much' and then go and spend £400 on junk." I do this all the time. Somehow spending £700 on cheap disposable tat in smaller increments just doesn't make you feel as guilty as spending £300 on one quality item that will possibly last a lifetime!
Totally agree with you about wasting money on your lunch hour. I used to work in midtown Manhattan right near Saks. You can see the problem there. And now I work from home. Much less temptation.
All great suggestions Sophie! I’ve learned to prioritize spending and focus on quality over quantity. What I cut out: no fast fashion; no junk jewelry; no make-up palletes(you never use all the colors); no ridiculously priced concert tickets; no stilletto heels (that you wear once a year)!
HI Sophie! I hope you and David are keeping well? I would love to see a video from you about finding confidence within the workplace , looking for new jobs and career advice! Wishing you a wonderful week ahead ❤
How can people upgrade their phones after 18 months?!?! Talk about waste. I keep my phones for 5 years. If it won't last that long, it's not worth buying.
Hi Sophie, Thanks for these great reminders of how to spend/save more carefully. It can be easy to slip back into bad habits sometimes. Hope you, David, and the bunnies are well. ❤ 😊
Super great video especially in the current financial mess we’re in. All very good reminders that we really don’t “need” much. I’ve been bringing my lunch to work every day forever n take advantage of the free coffee at work LOL.
Thank you for sharing and being honest about the pitfalls that are so easy to fall into. I do/did some of these things too, and it’s heartening to know it’s possible to kick habits like these!
I have had this conversation with SO many people! I think people take the 'avocado on toast' comment too literally when it's used as a reason people don't have savings now, but it reflects a lifestyle! I do enjoy luxury (be it clothing or even things like restaurants), but I'm very happy to compromise on frequency/quantity so I can enjoy the the luxury options responsibly. Keeping a monthly tracker of where I spend my money has been so valuable in highlighting this even more :)
Such a great set of reminders Sophie. The accountant in me cringed the whole way through this video. However it has started me thinking about having a closer look at my own budget, because there will always be something you can cut back on.
I think clothing apps also… and don’t get me started on the unlimited next day deliveries…. I had that for asos. I’d be buying so much and ordering excessively. Terrible trap.
Really outstanding video. It is so helpful to be reminded that everyone makes financial mistakes, but fiscal common sense (and self-awareness) are skills that can be acquired!
OMG you sound just like me...happy to know I am not the only one influenced by all those influencers with my drawers full of makeup that I never use. Thankfully I now too work from home so now no more lunch time shopping but you are so right and very helpful. Thank you for being so honest. You are great.
This whole conversation reminds me of a visit to The Gap a number of years ago. I went in to buy two t-shirts. While there, this teen girl and her mother were on a shopping spree, they had a stack of clothes sitting by the cash register that was as much as I had in my entire closet! Unfortunately, younger generations are being brainwashed into thinking that it's about quantity, not quality. Great video Sophie!
i really enjoyed this video! give me comfort and now i know i'm not alone! would you like to make a video advising on a strategic plan to save up for a designer bag? especially for young women these days who just started their career xx
Thanks so much for this Sophie. I think we’re all guilty of most of these. I have THOUSANDS of pounds worth of makeup that I don’t use - I too was obsessed with the cute MAC collections. I am trying to be more conscious and switch stuff from my (full) IKEA Alex 9-drawer to my vanity so I can actually use some of it, but now I WFH full time I can go a week without wearing makeup, so it’s tricky!
I definitely think times have changed and people learn about their spending habits through experience. I remember a few years back (think 2015-2016) your style was more focused on luxe accessories vs clothing, and I know that's shifted over the years. At first, I felt the same - why spend so much on clothes??! But if you buy nice pieces, you can learn how to work them into different outfits and have them for a much longer time xx
You reminded me that i have to pass on my coffee at work today but i created a habit to buy coffee from the store close to my working place especially when i am in a night shifft and working till 1 am i need something that gets me going. Plus their coffee is so deli😋
i order a chai tea latte from ralph's cafe because there's like a punch card (buy 10 get 1 free) and i just love sitting there and being in the nice environment next to the ralph lauren store so i go before work at my retail job and just enjoy myself for 45 minutes max...and starbucks has a good rewards program so yeah, i would order a bagel and an orange juice
Read the book called The Latte Factor...it talks about everything that you are saying...the 'pennies ' we spend on coffee, makeup, etc adds up to big dollars that could be invested into something that gives you a return.
It's crazy how everyone spends their teens and early 20ies buying TONS of fast fashion before realizing how much money they've wasted. I had shirts that fell apart after the first wash. I had necklaces that stained my skin green, I bought terribly uncomfortable cheap heels because they looked cute....and the BAGS! Just awful! What was my 17 year old self thinking? Also, one does not need 14 eyeshadow pallettes and 56 bottles of nail polish in different shades of pink and red. Today I know my style and my colours, buy less and invest in better quality. And SO true about the lunch! I easily wasted 30 to 50 bucks on that every week. Crazy!
I over consumed on makeup to because of YT for a long time. I realized that I should buy makeup that I would actually use instead of buying it for the hype. I only go on YT for product reviews before buying certain item lol
I do not know why folks do not make a thermos of organic coffee in the morning and then take it to work with them, and they can drink it whenever they want instead of having to wait in line to spend a lot more money at Starbucks.
Generally curious - but do your H&M, Topshop, Forever21, Zara, and etc clothes really get worn after one wash? Mostly asking because I've had mine for maybe 2 years (possibly more) before they became rags. I have jeggings from Uniqulo that started to show wear and fade after 6 years. I hope this doesn't come off as rude, just genuinely curious.
it all comes down to how you look after them too. If you hang dry clothes they last WAY longer than putting them in the dryer, I've got a jumper from a fast fashion place ive had for probably 12yrs now easily and its still like brand new. The more you look after stuff the longer it lasts usually. (Do not put jeans in the dryer on hot either, it ruins the elasticity, thats why they get loose, hang to dry as much as possible. I hang mine inside under a ceiling fan) I've definetly had items that fell apart within months, but when you buy them you can usually tell whats SUPER cheap and wont last and whats just cheap. But yes if you look after it, it should last you years regardless.
I feel like this is a video targeting me from a couple of years ago 😂 Thankfully I'm not really into fast fashion so I dodged that bullet but shopping on your lunch break or buying lunch out omg!!! I stopped buying lunch out during my long break between classes at college, factoring in a sandwich, drink and maybe a little treat such as a bar of chocolate (all to take back to college too) I was paying upward of €12 each time and god forbid if you wanted to sit in somewhere, double that amount!! Idk if these prices are because we are in cities? You're in London & I'm in Dublin, but it is at the stage where me maintaining being a smoker is cheaper than being a functioning human who has lunch LOL
This is really good advice the one I relate to is definitely coffee I love my coffee I probably need to get a latte or espresso machine instead of going out but I love going out to get a cup of coffee… but I’ve been trying to make less impulse buys and really focus on what I’m getting it’s a great habit to incorporate in your life
Can I ask what happens when you spill a latte on a $1000 sweater ? I dress to mess ( clumsy) so I am just wondering . I have nice things that I don't wear because of this .
I’m looking for a really good quality tracksuit, like a hoody / sweater and jogger set. Any recommendations ? I am sick of buying clothes that don’t last so happy to spend good money on something that will last for years and year! Xx
I love this woman! This video stopped me from going to the shops on my way home for some impulse buys. Thanks Sophie! Also the coffee and make up is definitely something I used to waste money on.

I think I had like 80 Mac eye shadows at one point. But I don’t regret it; it was so fun for me and a small indulgence comparatively. Thankfully I’ve rarely had a job where I’ve had a lunch break, and it wasn’t near w shopping center! The chocolate shop problem sounds fantastic actually 😂

But if you buy nice pieces, you can learn how to work them into different outfits and have them for a much longer time
xx
You sound just like me back in the day! It’s all a learning experience with fast fashion! Thank you for a great video!
You reminded me that i have to pass on my coffee at work today but i created a habit to buy coffee from the store close to my working place especially when i am in a night shifft and working till 1 am i need something that gets me going. Plus their coffee is so deli😋
I agree with everything you say, and have cut down on so many pointless buys lately, but i can't give up my Costa coffee ❤😂
lunch time shopping or after work shopping was one for me ^^" and my goodness the coffee was also another one! great video sophie! xx
You and I are too alike!!xx
i order a chai tea latte from ralph's cafe because there's like a punch card (buy 10 get 1 free) and i just love sitting there and being in the nice environment next to the ralph lauren store so i go before work at my retail job and just enjoy myself for 45 minutes max...and starbucks has a good rewards program so yeah, i would order a bagel and an orange juice
Hello Sophie, thank you for the video! More of these would be appreciated. Greetings, Monika.
Junk clothing, yeah… I do agree with you.. they don’t fare well after a few washes. 😢 Time to buy better quality ones that last longer
Such a good video Sophie! Could you do one with recommendations on which shops have clothes that wear well? Like your jumper?
Half an hour lunch would be best for me if I worked near shops. An hour for lunch time would be tempting for me to shop.
You’re so right, an hour is a killer when you’re in a great shopping spot! Hugs xx
What keeps you poor? Farfetch and Lilly Silk!😂
Somehow all this reminds me of Sophie Kinsella's "shopacholic series" 15 years ago.
These are my favorite kinds of videos
Writing down all of your points on my phone notepad to remind myself not to do them!!! Huge thank you for these tips ❤❤❤ Love you Sophie!
I hang mine inside under a ceiling fan)
I've definetly had items that fell apart within months, but when you buy them you can usually tell whats SUPER cheap and wont last and whats just cheap.
Totally agree with everything! Another great topic. 👍👍
Thank you, very much.
Excellent topic and well delivered. Thanks.
H&M's environmentally friendly line is actually just marketing, they were busted for that a little while ago. I wish companies weren't so scummy :')
I need to see this video! Thanks for sharing
I’m looking for a really good quality tracksuit, like a hoody / sweater and jogger set. Any recommendations ? I am sick of buying clothes that don’t last so happy to spend good money on something that will last for years and year! Xx
I am laughing so hard, just because I used to do so many of these activities.
I just got an ad from Shein while you were talking about wasting money on fast fashion 😅😅
Sophie, could you make a video about old and new money. I am curious about your opinions. I love your videos so much! ❤
Can you make a video in good quality clothing that is not designer? 🥰
I love this woman! This video stopped me from going to the shops on my way home for some impulse buys. Thanks Sophie! Also the coffee and make up is definitely something I used to waste money on.
Ahhh, thank you so much for the love my friend! I figured that sharing my old spending habits would be a bit entertaining 😂 those work shopping sprees were prolific! You have a great evening xx
Hi Sophie. Thank you for sharing. I like your opinion and absolutely agreed. It’s gonna be my inspo to be more aware with my spending habits. Love from Indonesia 💙💗🤗
I bought a $300 Gucci iPhone phone case, it peeled in 2-3 months. I called Gucci and they wouldn't exchange for another case or repair it.
The only time I use paypal is for my work pants. I work construction, and I gotta get new work pants every other year. Otherwise, I won't use paypal unless I already have the money in my account for frivolous things.
Hey Sophie! Would you be able to recommend brands for clothing that are good quality (that is accessible as in I can get in the States and isn’t crazy expensive)? I try to stay away from fast fashion but have not found a good go to place for quality clothes.
Love listening to you Sophie! Are your Urban Revivo items doing well in the wash? I think that brand is a fast fashion brand because they come out with so many pieces each week. Thanks!
Great topic!
Love this kind of videos, thank you so much❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching!🙏💗xx
Oh my gosh I can soooo relate! This was a funny video even thou I feel bad for all the money we’ve wasted lol
Love it so true ❤. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips Sophie 😊❤
I like PayPal for its convenience, Sophie was a compulsive shopper lol
As a result of the RUclips influencers of the 2010s, I have a Pavlovian response to the word "Palette".
I buy phone case at Amazon.
Sophie you're a gem. Love your videos 💓
What brands do you recommend buying from? I lost trust in any big names, even Chanel is lacking in quality these days…
I’m off on holiday tmr and I’m hyper waiting around. Looking forward to this video so much to try and distract my self. Also specific Q Sophie. I used PP for a 7 day trial for an editing tool they charged me like €90 right off the bat. I disputed, had you ever had this happen? Did you report and win?
I hope you have the BEST holiday, I’d be so excited!!! 🤩 PayPal can be the worst for subscriptions that you didn’t know about. Yes, it’s happened to me before. I’ve never won a case against it personally xx
@@SophieShohetOfficialDamm, it’s so annoying. My dad wanted me to touch up some photos before we meet some relatives so got a photoshop type thing 😭 they did have a “charged for free trial” option. So let’s hope!! Yes, thanks, America here I am come…I’m excited to see your travels this year
I think I had like 80 Mac eye shadows at one point. But I don’t regret it; it was so fun for me and a small indulgence comparatively. Thankfully I’ve rarely had a job where I’ve had a lunch break, and it wasn’t near w shopping center! The chocolate shop problem sounds fantastic actually 😂
PayPal is so tempting and dangerous. I’m still in PayPal hole and trying to claw my way out
It really is a danger! Lol! Xx
I hear ya!!!
Especially with the Pay in 3, by the time you know it, you have bought many things using Pay in 3 and several months later, you look at your bank statement and you see all these "PayPal " PayPal, PayPal" coming out of your account. Thank God I have cleared my final installment. I hope it stays that way for a long time.
Buy good Specialty Coffee to make home 🧡
You will get away much cheaper with the choicest yerba mate. 🧉
Thank you thank you thank you for your great video ❤
Well-said, Sophie! 👍💕

Hello lovely Samantha! I do still do these types of videos, although I normally put them in vlogs. If you want to watch a makeup tutorial with some skincare, you can check out my last Vlog. I will definitely aim to do more!🫶🥰😊xx
Ahh thank you so much for replying lovely 😊. I have spent rather a small fortune on Charlotte Tilbury this weekend after watching your video 😂. Love watching you. Hope you and David are well and enjoying your weekend xx
@@samanthalouise25 You and I are so the same, I am a huge Charlotte Tilbury fan - I dare not go on the website!😂😅 The weekend has been so nice, thank you! We’ve had lots of time with the family which has been lovely 🥰 I hope you’ve had a nice weekend too, and I wish you a great week ahead ❤️🫶xx
