- Rota ("The Oath") is an early 20th-century Polish poem, as well as a celebratory anthem, once proposed to be the Polish national anthem. Rota's lyrics were written in 1908 by activist for Polish independence, poet Maria Konopnicka. The music was composed two years later by composer, conductor and concert organist, Feliks Nowowiejski.
Konopnicka's poem came into being as a protest against the German Empire's oppression and suppression of Polish culture in German-occupied western Poland - lands that from the late 18th century after the Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to 1918 were under Prussian - and later, German - rule.
Rota was first sung publicly during a patriotic demonstration in Kraków on July 15, 1910, held to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Polish-Lithuanian victory over the Teutonic Knights at the Battle of Grunwald. The anthem quickly became popular across partitioned Poland. Until 1918, Rota served as the anthem of the Polish Scouting movement. After Poland regained independence in 1918, Rota, in 1927, found itself under consideration for a time as a possible Polish national anthem.
During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, on the eve of 11 November 1939 (Polish Independence Day), in Zielonka, a town at the outskirts of Warsaw, the scouts from the Polish Scouting Association put up posters with the text of the poem on the walls of the buildings. In reprisal, German occupying forces carried out an execution of 9 scouts and other inhabitants of the town. A monument commemorating the crime stands on its site today. In 2008, a film telling that story was made (11 listopada).
After 1989 Rota became the official anthem of the Polish People's Party. Until 2003, the melody of the anthem was played by the Gdańsk carillon tower and served as the signature theme of the television stations TVP Poznań and TVP Gdańsk. In 2010 Rota and its author Konopnicka were honored by special resolution of Polish Sejm It also served as the anthem of the Polish National-Territorial Region.

Unfortunatelly you had short version of the song. Origin of this song is based in partition of Poland, and it's voicing oposition aginst germanisation of Polish children. In the 3rd verse (not heard here) there is a sentence: "No German will spit in our face, nor we'll he germanize our kids". This is the true meaning of this song. Resistance to foreign powers. but You know our history.

Jest to dość minimalne jako program polityczny, oznacza to bowiem, że każdy inny może nam pluć w twarz, aby nie Niemiec, i że Niemiec też może pluć, aby nie w twarz."
@@maciekszymanski8340 Słonimski niewiele z tego rozumiał, możliwe, ze jako zdecydowanie pierwsze spolszczone pokolenie w jego bogobojnej żydowskiej rodzinie (w dodatku mieszkającej na Białorusi) nie do końca czuł nasze emocje, nie do końca znał zakorzenione tradycje i sposoby odreagowywania różnych rzeczy czy dodawania sobie sił. Nie czuł (bo widocznie tego w nim w dzieciństwie nie wyrobiono, nie zdobył tez stosownego wykształcenia akademickiego) skąd się bierze wyjątkowo silne wzruszenie Polaków przy wykonywaniu tej prostej piosenki z silnym, zamierzenie symbolicznym przekazem (możliwe też, ze nie przemawiał do niego XIX -wieczny symbolizm w sztuce i filozofii, albo go wręcz nie rozumiał).
Po pierwsze, melodia "Roty" nawiązuje do starych pieśni śpiewanych przez piechurów w polskich armiach od XV w., pomagających im znosić trudy długiej wędrówki, ale też pomagających im w walce, dosłownie, na polu bitwy. Na podobną monotonną, ni to smętną, ni to pogodną, koniecznie wzruszającą melodię, powstawały też ludowe pieśni pomagające chłopom pańszczyźnianym w pracy na polu (na czele z "Zachodźże słoneczko" z XVII w.), a nawet pieśni dziadów pod kościołem, chętnie słuchane po niedzielnej mszy przez wszystkie warstwy społeczne. Melodyka po prostu kojarzyła się z dzielnością, wytrwałością, jakąś jedna silna emocją, oraz wyrazistym przekazem: z budującą, pokrzepiającą lub pouczającą treścią.
Po drugie, wiersz nawiązywał wprost do buntu i oporu polskich dzieci ze szkoły we Wrześni, brutalnie bitych przez Niemców (niektóre skończyły w szpitalu), żeby w szkole mówiły tylko po niemiecku. Miało to związek z brutalną, szokującą wręcz (nawet w tamtych czasach) germanizacją, tzw. hakatą, którą w II połowie XIX w. wdrożył Bismarck i która oburzyła całe polskie społeczeństwo, we wszystkich zaborach. Bunt dzieci we Wrześni podziwiała cała Polska, to było wydarzenie bardzo nośne w tamtych czasach i generalnie w czasach, gdy musieliśmy bronic swojego języka czy tradycji, nie wspominając juz o państwowości, nieważne, czy chodziło o opór wobec Rosjan, czy wobec Niemców, komunistów czy wobec kogokolwiek innego.
Być może Słonimski nie odziedziczył tej "pamięci społecznej i emocjonalnej" i nie rozumiał, co to mit i symbol w tradycyjnym polskim, oddolnym przekazie, dlatego nie był w stanie współodczuwać z Polakami, idiotycznie koncentrując się na "jakości poezji" i dosłownie interpretując symbolizm. Co było tym bardziej głupie, że nie rozumiał chyba także znaczenia stwierdzenia "splunąć komuś w twarz", a jeśli rozumiał, to jego żart był cyniczny i podły, obraźliwy dla Polaków.
Nie rozumiał, że chodzi tu o jasny przekaz trafiający pod strzechy, z nawiązaniem do poetyki pieśni pokrzepiających na duchu (zarówno w słowach, jak i melodii). Konopnicko świetnie wywiązała się z zadania stworzenia takiego przekazu.

@@Darwidx Zaśpiewaliśmy kiedyś (1979) całą klasą Rotę przed lekcją rosyjskiego. Potraktowaliśmy ten utwór instrumentalnie żeby wkurzyć nielubianą nauczycielkę. Ale tak naprawdę to walczyłem właśnie o to, by takich piosenek nie było w polskim repertuarze. Bo to żenada, kicz, Zenek Martyniuk.

Wiem, że teraz czasy się zmieniły i Niemcy są bardziej "cywilizowane", ale to jest historia i o niej nie można zapominać.
This is shortened, cut out version. Rota- the " Oath" was very patriotic anti- german poem that encouraged people to fight in uprisings against occupants of Polish land.
Others has written the whole text, however it is important to mention that when Poland was under partitions, the children has been tried to be germanised/ rusified and being a patriot meant for many horrible reppercussions, emigration, sending to Syberia or even death. Mickiewicz, Słowacki, etc. Any Polish writer that mentioned the truth about history and about being a patriot was censored. Germans even tried to make children have a religion lesson in German that was even protested by children in Września (1901-1902).
Unfortunately, the majority of the Polish population managed to be germanized and to this day, living in east germany, they think that they are germans.

It used to be an unofficial anthem of Poland, I sang it (1st verse+chorus) with the school choir during the school assembly on independence day, it gets ppl into the mood
this is a 1908 poem, later made into a song. Rota means "Oath" and is a patriotic poem from a time when Poland was still divided under three occupiers (until 1918). the video you saw is somewhat "conveniently" omitting the final verses of the poem that go something like: The German will no longer spit in our faces, nor germanize our children. Our regiment is bravehearted, led by the Spirit. we'll rise up to the song of the golden horn, so help us God!" very anti-german, so no longer kosher nowadays. the golden horn is a reference to a 1901 stage play "Wesele" (The Wedding), where a golden horn was supposed to wake up the subjugated Poles and bring about a rebellion that would won them freedom.

Read the true history of Poland, who was Pilsudski (Jewish surname - Selman), a German agent, at the same time an agent of Rothschild, brought to Warsaw from Germany in 1918 in the same railway wagon that the Germans had transported Lenin to Russia a year earlier to start the Bolshevik revolution.
To understand properly this song You should find out more about the tragic period of the Partitions of Poland and how people were treated by the enemies occupying the country for 123 years. They were persecuted even for just speaking Polish. So this is a patriotic protest anthem, to sustain the people's spirit and to oppose the aggresive germanization, especially of the children, in that time. The author of the lyrics was Maria Konopnicka, a famous Polish poet and novelist (there are a lot of streets or schools of her name) and the author of the music was Feliks Nowowiejski, a well known Polish composer of that times.

There are millions of people thinking, this should be our national anthem. It cant be (for obvious legal reasons). But it is unofficial anthem of Poland. I would always stand up with my hand on my heart when I hear this
Listen to the song of the Polish knights, considered to be the first anthem of Poles from the Middle Ages, which is still sung in the Old Polish language, "Bogurodzica". It is a religious song, and when Poles listen to it, they get chills, knowing the historical baggage of Poland behind it.
Many people here suggest in their comments that "Rota" should be our national anthem.

Znam całą treść Roty jednak jeszcze nigdy nie udało mi się jej całej zaśpiewać. Gdzieś w okolicach trzeciej lub czwartej zwrotki zatyka mi gardło a oczy dziwnie mokną ... Pełnię wymowy tej pięknej pieśni może zrozumieć tylko Polak lub człowiek, którego historia narodu jest porównywalna z naszą. Myślę, że odpowiednikiem Roty w pieśniach kościelnych byłaby "Boże coś Polskę" ale to wyłącznie osobista opinia.
The part with a priest on a battlefield was about Ignacy Skorupka, a priest who without weapon lead polish troops during polish-soviet war in 1920.

The words to this song were written by Maria Konopnicka, a poet and writer who is very appreciated in Poland. In the second half of the 19th century, she wrote and published in the Warsaw press a poem inspired by the events in the town of Września (located in the German partition - part of Poland occupied in the 19th century by Prussia and then Germany). Children there were beaten and forced to speak only German at school, but the children rebelled. The melody for this poem was created very quickly, and even more quickly the song began to be sung at social gatherings and during patriotic events throughout Poland, in all three partitions.

Rota was an answer for trying to force german language and culture on Polish people under the partitions (the children of Września - you can check it out). Unfortunately that was not the last time, during the PRL period children had to learn russian language at school

Hi Rob, sorry but it's not the whole song, you can't properly react to it as you don't know what it means and what is about.
It started as poetry under German occupation after murder on Polish kids for learning polish language. Can't remember from the top of my head name of that place, I think it was Brzesc in Wielkopolska and author was Konopnicka. Music was added later and for many it was Polish anthem as it was wrote earlier. Like I said I can't get all information for you now, as I just woken up after my beauty sleep and still don't fire on all cylinders.

Lyrics written by Maria Konopnicka were published in 1908 for a first time. I think, that interpretation of this song you've choose is gutless. You may also try "Boże, coś Polskę" in a full length film "Hubal". Easy to find.

Rota pełniła kiedyś funkcję hymnu, a jeszcze wcześniej była Bogurodzica, zachęcam do wysłuchania. Rota jest przepełniona patriotyzmem, bo powstała w czasie zaborów, więc we wszystkich pieśniach patriotycznych mamy bardzo bogate tło historyczne i podkreślenie że do XVII wieku byliśmy potężnym i najsilniejszym państwem.

Honestly, I feel Rota should have been chosen over Mazurek Dąbrowskiego as the country's anthem. Where Mazurek doesn't really resonate, speaking of events long past and people long dead, Rota focuses on the struggle to preserve our identity and our refusal to surrender - it's not only timeless in that manner, but also far, *far* more badass.
I see your point , but due to the reference to God these days it might be considered exclusive by some of those who are not believers....of course the reference to God could be considered metaphorically as a symbol of "fate" or "force majoure" (?)...but 🤔🤔
Though this song is quite traditional, Feliks Nowowiejski was actually an avant-garde composer for his time(he could be considered a Polish counterpart of Richard Strauss).

The words were composed by a woman, Polish poet Maria Konopnicka, very famous for her works for children and many socially engaged poems. In the second part of her life she was associated with a woman. A very interesting character, remembering that she lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
There is a third verse in this song, an anti-German one, starting with the words: "No German will spit in our faces...".

I think that this song is quite in the same style as "Rule Britannia" in the way that it should be sang with very good, orchestral music. But the difference is this, that "Rota" was written by Polish poetrist: Maria Konopnicka in response to Germanization of children from school in Września, while UK didn't have that kind of existential struggle

That song was written in speciffic time. It was the beggining of XX c. Polish lands were divided to three other countries: Russia, Germany and Austria. In German and Russian schools Polish children were punished for using Polish language (even if they were majority of people there). In Września town children were forced to pray in German. When they refused, they were beaten. So they parents came to school at first to protest against beating of they children. Those parents were arrested. That was the beginning of school protest in all over Great Poland region. The protests had place in 800 of schools and 75 000 of children. First, brutal reaction of German country coused reaction od Polish people in other countries. And that is why (and when) Maria Konopnicka wrote "Rota".
