To me it just depends on whoever rights the story. Their been some animes, manga, comics, cartoons, and films showcasing modern military cant do anything against fantasy setting forces. But then some that showcase they are more match for them. Magic users and monsters/creatures that are powerful enough probably be more difficult for modern forces to deal with. But common foot soldiers not so much. I wonder how heros and adventurers who skills and magic abilities far surpass common warriors would do against modern military. Again depends on writer and how powerful fantasy characters, weapons, and creatures are. Thats just my opinion.

Japan and the EU are probably the only safe places in the entire world the gate could've opened in, two relatively powerful country/confederation with pacifist intents, I'd really see Japan and the EU working together to secure the special region, after all the two ate kind of close allies
