Just finished watching that, yeah I think a lot of brickfilms have noticed a decline in their views but you have really cleared up why that as. I think while SW is in the hands of Disney it isn't making the greatest name for itself with so much content being released by them it is bound to be hit and miss. I think you are right in that because of that it takes away interest from brickfilmers due to this overdose of content. Excellent video btw, I saw Watermelon Studios documentary on battlepacks hey maybe documentaries might be the way to go next lol...

Absolutely incredible video blackbird this perfectly describes the state of the Lego Star Wars community and I hope that this video brings attention to why it is important to support the small creators since stop motion is not an easy hobby and that is important for our work to be recognized as an integral part of this community as it has always been.

Hey, I just watched your video and I can say that you potrayed the topic quite well. I thought about the question often too and I think it has a lot of reasons, why the community shrinks, gets less views and stuff like that. First of all, I´m from Germany and I mostly know stuff about the German community and I need to say, that it is the same pattern showed in your video.
I started with Lego YT around 2015 and created my channel in 2017. For me this was the Golden Age, with a lot of views and a still quite active community. After that around 2018-2019 people started to leave the community and views became less. I also know quite a lot of people in the Lego ww2/military Community (mainly MOC builders, like myself) and the reason a lot of them left was mainly life. The just became older and didn´t had the time or interesst anymore to create Content. Also at the time YT got a new Algorythmus that pushed questionable Content on the side and gave topics like LEGO Stop Motion and smaller channels way less of a plattform. The content was not as much suggest on people YT accounts then before. Another thought I have is that, kids today aren´t that much interessted in LEGO Star Wars Stop Motions then before, Gaming became more popular, LEGO even more expensive = so less people joining the Community or atleast became interessted in Stop Motion Content.
For me personal I lacked more and more motivation and the only thing that really kept me in the community was the LUGs (Lego User Groups) I´m a member of. For that reason I still built MOCs in the context of a Collab and even founded my own German LUG that got quite succsessful in the last two years. And even there I see especially people who are long members of the com start leaving or became less and less active. Again life, becaming older, stress in school, university, work or whatever can be reasons.
Another point I read in the comments here, is that since Disney overtook Star Wars, less good new content came out. I mean the stop motion community peaked with Star Wars The Clone Wars and since that is over the generation who grow up with TCW is way less active or just leaves the com after after another. And for sure the are still quite a lot of Kids who like Star Wars, but it is not the same vibe, energy and or time then like 5 to 15 years ago in my opinion.
I myself started to became more active again in September this year and I really see that even when I make more and better content like 2-3 years before, views and stuff like that are still really bad. I also have a ton of dead subscribers that doesen´t help too. Overall I continue, because it can still makes fun to build and being part of a LUG.
Thanks for reading and I hope everything was understandble. Greetings from Germany and keep up your Content! :D

Your points are very fair, although it may seem that these brickfilms aren't getting as much views as other stuff, they are still an important part to the community in exposing new stories and possibilities in Star Wars, that professional companies can't make due to Disney. Us brickfilmers can, and watching them are so cool to see stories come to life that some people only imagined might have happened commercially.

As a new brickfilmer, I totally get what you mean, I remember when I was much younger and I was watching fancy pants and all those popular stop motions. It was amazing and views were insane on all these huge battles and so on, I loved watching everything Lego Star Wars related back then. When I decided to upload I realized that a lot of the og guys were gone and there is not that many viewers anymore. Anyway we’ll have to support each other, even big or smallest creators. Wonderful video as always Blackbird. Although I haven’t been as active as I’d like in the brickfilming scene to see the effect of this, I have experienced the same thing as a musician. No one gets to see the WEEKS of hard work you put into your story or your song, they only get to see the 3 minute song or animation that you created. When you have content like leaks/reviews that pretty much creates itself, it starts to make sense why views are so down for passion projects and original content like Star Wars brickfilmers.
And while this would probably discourage most people, I think it will have the opposite effect on this community. The sheer amount of support and collaboration I have seen among the Lego Star Wars stop motion community is very inspiring, so much so that I’ve gone back and remastered a brickfilm I made 6 years ago.
Like you said, we definitely don’t do this for money; I think we do it to share our ideas and stories with people who appreciate and love it: this community.

  • @PixelPieceProductions
    @PixelPieceProductions 2 года назад +5

Good points man. Not sure if I’d agree with everything you said, but probably the majority.
From my experience and releasing Escaping Utapau, I found that advertising the brickfilm before it’s release date on my Instagram page really helped bump it up on the RUclips algorithm. Most of my traffic for that brickfilm comes from RUclips’s recommendations now, so it’s obvious that RUclips has (what I think) too much control over what people are exposed to in terms of videos they’d like to see. Social media has changed a lot since I started making brickfilms (2009), it was a lot easier to get views and subscribers then.
There was definitely a dark period for the brickfilm community (2012-2015 roughly?) which could have possibly played a role in RUclips’s decision to not expose brickfilms as much because they weren’t gaining traction and major brickfilm channels were going dark. But I think over the years, it’s grown. We have newer and younger creators rising that I think could help make brickfilms great again. 😉 haha

It unfortunately seems the LEGO SW community is losing interest in stop motions (unless they’re absolutely phenomenal) and instead going for set reviews/LEGO rumour vids. Also, fewer people have been surfing youtube after the pandemic ended which is a shame. Insightful documentary, Blackbird!

I was talking about this with one of my friends the other day. I think now with the lego community in general its now more about reviews and leaks rather than about actually creating. But I feel like for SW brickfilms and mocs even tho views may be down theres always something special about them when it is made by fans and a lot of effort and love has been put into it. Theres still so much to explore from legends and canon that anyone can appreciate the work that goes into it. From a fellow animator those vids may not generate the most amount of views but at least its something for someone to enjoy and then go back to like all the SW films. As long as we have fun making them and it makes someones day a little better it's all that matters in my eyes. With that great vid as always!

Really interesting video and you make a lot of good points.
I think Brickfilms/Lego Stop-motions will always be around for as long as Lego Star Wars is kicking as there will always be people wanting to try their hand at making their own fanfic/stories/creations.
However, it does seem like Animators get significantly less recognition than Commentary or review channels do, which I suppose in a way makes sense as people will want to know what is coming out next wave or research a set before buying.
Still, it would be nice to see the talent that exists in on the platform be recognised as there are a HUGE amount of smaller channels who are of making some really impressive stuff.

All of you guys have been such a great inspiration for me and probably a lot of other people out there. You should neer be forgotten as it is also you guys who shape the LEGO Star Wars community in a way no leaker or MOC builder can do as you literally bring the minifigures to life and tell stories with them that no MOOCcould. Amazing video!
I'm hopeful that the brickfilm community will continue to be relevant. Sorry for the egotism, but there are projects I want to make and be able to share with the community. The only obstacles are time and our lives outside the platform. Not everyone makes money on RUclips full time nor believes in the immoral practice of crowdfunding like Patreon (I know I hate it with a passion). When I look at your content, AJV's, Doodledood, ASAP Animation, Utty L, EndFlight Productions to name a few, the Expanded Universe of books, comics, shows and games we grew up loving alongside the films (which I still consider canon in my honest opinion, screw Di$ney), you make it relevant again. It reminds us all of the good content and shows the love we have for the material. Don't give up on that, mate, your content is epic.
I'm gonna end with a bit of a rant there, I apologize but Ryan seems really hypocritical to me when I hear this statement... I just *can't* stand this guy, Just2Good, Republic Studs and other Lego influencers/commenters like them... They don't represent us, period. I don't care what people say on that matter.

I’d say one of the problems stop motion creators make is making unoriginal content. There are tons of animations that are just simple battles without any real story or characters. (If it’s your first animation then that’s fine, but it gets boring after a while). My advice if you ever want to make a battle: have characters with dialogue, and a story to go with it.

Agreed and now your wondering why I'm making a Star Wars Story in the Sequels instead of the Prequels because most Prequel Era Lego Star Wars Stories sometimes follow the Same format as Pizzamovies, regardless how you feel about the Sequels 2 Years after it gave us a unsatisfying ending, there are people in this community who aren't afraid of making a Story in a Era everyone looks down upon, and here's me Experimenting 20 plus minute Episodes for my Forced Campaign Series trying to do a style of writing that the Action Figure Stop Motion Community does, or adapt Story elements from other Media I consumed.

To be fair MandR has a point, the Lego Star Wars stop motion community is no where near as big as it used to be
