    The awesome part of this game is how you can choose which elements of Jins fighting abilities you want to focus on and what tells your story. For me, I very much abandoned the way of the Samurai in favor of the Ghosts assassinations. To Build this, I would re-skin a Paladin as a samurai, especially if you've gained the Heavenly Strike, for anyone who can't visualize the divine smite as one of his abilities. Lay on Hands can be re-skinned as his resolve or his ability to quickly revive allies. Find steed is funny, but accurate to what the gameplay is like. Then once he becomes the Ghost you can switch that into an oathbreaker and take 3 levels of Rogue to get assassinate. Divine Smite + Assassinate will give the perfect feel of an honourable warrior turned assassin and deal crazy damage with guaranteed crits that will double sneak attack and smite dice.

      @@MoonIllusionOfficial I'd argue ghost stance here. I've seen someone on reddit argue makig him an oathbreaker paladin, which you could roleplay really nicely too. Maybe he was crown paladin before but then, when he multiclasses into rogue, he breaks one of the tenents, becoming an oathbreaker and adopting the whole terror tactic. then you simply reflavor some of the spells as jin's abilities and weapons

    I’m a little late to this. Awesome build, just wanted to ask a couple questions about other options that you may or may not have thought of and tried.
    - I made a test build inspired by this, but I went only 3 levels in monk, 7 levels of fighter and 10 in rogue. Went the inquisitive route instead of thief for the Eye for Detail and Insightful Fighting abilities. I lose out on the third attack due to less fighter levels, but my sneak attack dice are 5d6, so I’m thinking in my head that it would at least even out with this build. I’m inexperienced with rogue, so I was wondering if it’s better to hit with less attacks and have a beefier sneak attack or vice versa.
    - I’m also looking for bomb options (smoke bombs for hiding, then a standard, small explosive bomb). Do these exist in DnD 5e? The sacred flame is a good option that I might go with but wanted to see if I could pull it off without magic.

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  2 года назад +1

      It is generally better to have more attacks then to have one stronger attack. 5d6 isn't the most when it comes to damage, thats only an average of about 17.5 damage if you are able to hit the target. That being said its your character so if you like that playstyle more thats totally fine and you should go with that. I will say Inquisitive isn't the greatest subclass, you should instead just pick up expertise in investigation, I think assassin is the best choice just to match how good the Ghost is able to assassinate people.
      In the players handbook or dungeons master guide (I forget) there are bombs (I think they are literally just bombs that deal like 2d6 fire damage in a small radius and thats it) and smoke bombs. It may be locked depending on your dms allowance of them in their setting, but they are there nonetheless. I wouldn't worry too much if you cannot get them though because they are expensive and are consumed on use so it might be hard to justify using them. If you want you can pick up smiths tools, and on downtime craft them instead if your dm allows it.

      @@MoonIllusionOfficial thank you for the advice! My usual play style is standard Paladin, aka: slap on the chunky armor, grab the biggest hunk of metal with a handle, and press the divine smite button repeatedly. In other words I’ve never gone the sneaky route, so the feedback helps a lot. That said, it sounds like more trouble than it’s worth to grab the items as opposed to taking one feat.
      Thanks again for the help!

  • @C4MG1RL
    @C4MG1RL 4 года назад

    I get it's for stats but Jin is pretty smart in the game... At times because rushing to Shimura in act 1 was pretty dumb NGL. But I think charisma definitely shouldn't be a dump stat, inspiring his allies and intimidating his enemies is a pretty big part of his identity as both a Samurai and The Ghost.

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  4 года назад

      Well 8 is average and 10 is barely above average, so they aren't "bad" stats. Its also much harder than you must realize to actually represent the stats of someone and make it playable as well. I had to "dump" those stats because he used more Wisdom and Dexterity than charisma and intelligence.
      Intelligence in dnd basically represents how much you know about Magic and lore on things, I felt that Jin was more Wise than he was Intelligent and his Wisdom can also represent what he learned throughout the story (his process of becoming the Ghost). Also the way that Jin acts is more Wise than intelligent, he is always learning from his and his uncles mistakes.
      Charisma is just something he rarely uses in the game, sure he uses deceptive combat styles, but we represent that with Dexterity and being a Rogue and using his Ghost weapons. Not to say he isn't charming or intimidating, its just that he so rarely uses it in the game that its hard to justify making it more than 10 when we have so limited points.
      You also mention inspiring allies, I do not really believe that comes from his charisma, that comes from his reputation. He was so incredibly skilled and terrifying that he grew to be a legend that people follow.
      We also represent intimidation with the Menacing Manuever and I believe you can very easily get Intimidation proficiency through background choices.

    • @C4MG1RL
      @C4MG1RL 4 года назад

      True enough. I didn't mean to come across as saying your builds "wrong" or anything, just some thoughts on the character and how he'd fit in d&d. Jin has his moments but wise doesn't really fit how he comes across to me. He learns from mistakes but he also still acts brashly like when he goes behind Shimura's back to poison the mongols.
      Moments like rallying Yarikawa or calming down Lady Masako felt like examples that'd warrant having points in charisma. Whike his reputation holds a big part in his overall image that reputation isn't what rallied the defenders or got him his allies in the final fights. His reputation doesn't stop enemies from attacking him, but entering Ghost Stance would be an intimidation tactic as is the commander slaughter.
      He also comes us with quite a few clever tactics to handle situations though I suppose that's more up to interpretation and how you run the game whether that's a wisdom or intelligence trait. To me, I feel they're intelligence and are more indicative of his character than his wisdom.
      In the end how you build the character is affected by how you played the game. I, personally, didn't use the bow much and instead used mostly stealth, the tools, and direct attacks with the katana. The moments where he's cunning and comes up with plans to handle the Mongols superior numbers, how he takes their weapons and makes his own tools like the smoke bomb and sticky bombs, and his ability to inspire and intimidate stuck out more to me.
      I still like the video and found it interesting to see your interpretation and build on the character!

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  4 года назад

      @@C4MG1RL Thank you for saying that, that's why I said in the build that its not that he isn't charismatic or intelligent, it's moreso that I needed to make those lower to get the features he needed in order to be able to play him in dnd how you would play him in the video game.

    Interesting build! But I have 2 questions/remarks
    First of all, the longbow can actually not be taken as a monk weapon because it has the heavy trait, and the Kensai weapons you pick must lack the heavy and special properties. So unfortunately for that you're going to be stuck with the shortbow (but that's only a difference of 1d8 vs 1d6 so it's not that bad, plus as a monk weapon it'll scale with your level after.)
    and 2, with Tasha's optional monk features, you can pick one weapon each short or long rest to choose as your monk weapon, with the same restrictions as kensai. With this in mind, how would you change this build? Perhaps a different class than Kensai, or would you still go with Kensai for the longsword/shortbow versatility?
    Great video by the way, I enjoy your attention to detail on class features representing game mechanics and lore!

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  3 года назад

      I dont think that is true because on D&D Beyond, you are allowed to choose the longbow as your kensei weapon. D&D Beyond is made by Wizards so it must be in the rules.

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  3 года назад

      These are the official rules: You are not restricted to longbows. A kensei weapon can be any weapon that does not have the heavy or special property, plus longbows. That means that you can use any ranged weapon except the heavy crossbow. Also, your kensei weapon counts as a monk weapon.

    Great Build! I like your thoughts on it. However, I made some thoughts myself and slightly disagree with your multiclass choices a little bit. I gladly would like to hear your thoughts on my idea though!
    I agree with taking the human variant, but I would take the Alert feat. The missing ability point will be balanced by having more ASIs from the fighter level --> I completely agree with the three Rogue (Assassin levels), however, I would actually take the Samurai over the Battle Master and completely drop the monk class levels and swap them with 3 Ranger levels and 3 more fighter levels. Here's my reasoning:
    Samurai over Battlemaster: The Fighting Spirit is exactly what Jin Sakai needs. Using your determination to overgo the opponents defenses or healing yourself is quite much like giving yourself advantage on any attack roll and "healing yourself" by granting 5 additional temporal hit points.
    Unarmored Defense: Jin doesn't have that impenetrable defense you are giving him credit for. At least not unless he's wearing the Samurai-Clan or Gosaku's Armor (which both are at least medium if not heavy armor). If he's surrounded by enemies he's really not that good in taking many blows.
    Martial Arts: It's true, Jin likes to kick but his kicks do no damage at all, much rather just let the opponent stagger and break their defenses. So it's more like creating an advantage rather than damaging the foe which again results in the Samurai over the battle Master.
    Kensei: You are a Fighter, you already are proficient with those weapons. I also see it a bit as unnessecarily complicated to use the monks bonus attacks which (to be honest) use the bonus action slot you have better uses for.
    Now on to the 3 levels of ranger:
    Favored Enemy: It's like Jin's focus on tracking the mongols' hoards.
    Fighting Style: Taking the defense or duel style as a Samurai allows for the archery style here.
    Spellcasting: THIS is to bring the ghost weapons into the game! Taking Fog Cloud as your smoke bombs. Through the effects of fog cloud you can attack as normal (advantage and disadvantage nullify each other) but opponents have disadvantage on their attacks against you because of your alert feat. Through Hail of thorns throwing one kunai is like throwing several. Or use ensnaring strike to stop them from moving like the kunai does. It's very versatile.
    Ranger Archetype --> Gloom Stalker:
    It's the perfect addition to the Raogue Assassin and completes the ghost samurai! Each combat you gain additional initiative equal to your wisdom modifier which gives you a total bonus of +9 with 18 wisdom, more movement and an additional attack on your first round, exploiting the Assassinate feat as much as possible. You also gain the umbral sight feat which grants you darkvision AND lets you be invisible for nearly every creature since it makes you invisible for creauters with dark vision as well (perfect for ghost like infiltrations).
    What do you say?

    • @MoonIllusionOfficial
      @MoonIllusionOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Haha, the main reason I didn't do something like this is because this is literally the exact same build as my Ultimate Assassin part 2. And I have my reasons for going Monk and Battle Master and choosing not to go Ranger.
      I wanted to represent how Jin can stagger people, so the easiest way to do so is through monk, plus a lot of movement options are gained through monk. I know that he already has proficiency in martial weapons, but Kensei makes a weapon a monk weapon which is extremely useful because you can't use a longsword with Dexterity. Jin needed that versatile longsword to pull off a lot of things he was missing out on.
      I went battle Master because of the manuevers that he uses in combat, plus there was no parry or riposte representation, or making enemies terrified. Those are all much more important. The advantage he would gain is from his stunning strike kicks or getting the drop on enemies so you don't need a bonus action advantage and heal especially when you already have second wind which actually heals you and doesn't just give you temporary hit points.
      I believe I took 3 feats, sharpshooter, magic initiate and alert, so it shouldn't be too far off for what you want.
      Lastly I mention in the video that I wanted him to have unarmored defense, but not because he is impenetrable, because it depends on how you represent the "unarmored defense." So either that represents him wearing something like the ghost armor, making him much more nimble and likely to dodge, or the Gosaku armor, making him much more defensive. Because its nothing you are allowed to have it look like whatever you like.
      If you still don't like my reasoning sorry, but I believe that this is the best way to build Jin because I spent days researching and getting every single Jin Sakai feature in this build.

    • @ScrOuch13
      @ScrOuch13 3 года назад

      @@MoonIllusionOfficial Please don't get me wrong, I never disliked your reasoning in the first place. I found the effort and accuracy of your descriptions very well rounded and appreciate your thoughts very much. It just happens that I found myself not seeing the monk in a Jin Sakai build. My conception of a samurai just differs too much from that of a monk and I had a feeling it's missing the social or political part which is very important for Jin imo. I can see and understand the battle master pick though. But as you said in the video, picking it over samurai just doesn't feel right somehow.
      Btw the part of the katana is quite interesting. I found some sources online where it's stated that a Katana in dnd could also be a long sword type of weapon with the finesse trait which would solve the dex issue. Not sure if those sources were official though.
