I discovered Scharwenka's music quite by chance via an LP that i picked up at a church rummage sale in Bath, England. I've always wanted to hear more of his stuff ever since, and i hope that more people will, too. He fits into a sort of category between the Romantics and the 20th century masters.

While I think his music is amazing, he's not a transitional figure at all and 100% a late Romantic. Just like his slightly younger contemporary, Christian Sinding.

Hyperion Records of Great Britain did a wonderful series on the Romantic Concerto, if you're interested in following more paths in this territory.

This recording was one of the first (or THE first?) in that series.

I thought Earl Wild did all of them, but I guess he just did the first 3? When I think of Scharwenka I always think of the 1960s review by Glenn Gould (in the Reader collection) entitled, "Should We Dig Up the Rare Romantics? No, Theyr'e Only a Fad," where he calls the Wild LP a "retaliation" for another label's obscure concerto. Anyway, I'm glad Stephen Hough does his own thing (this is only one example) without regard to GG's entertaining but arbitrary prejudices.

I thought Earl Wild just did no.1 (unsurpassed to date!)

Glen Gould wrote a lot of crap about music. Who reads the stuff? He was a genius as pianist, but as a writer about music he mostly produced mental overloaded junk. Enjoy the rare romantic pieces and ignore this writings. They only try to disturb the joy of music.

His attitude was fairly typical of the time, though - a time where stardom trumped repertoire in most of classical music.

Glenn Gould was wrong. He avoided the vast majority of the Romantic standard repertoire so he clearly just channelled his personal distaste there and probably also engaged in contrarianism for the sake of it. He once claimed that, if anything, Mozart died too old because he was starting to repeat himself. That's crazy.

@@classicallpvault8251 I have more sympathy for his view on Mozart, to be honest.

The 2nd movement should be Allegretto molto tranquillo, not Allegro.

The pulse is clearly one beat per bar and that pulse IS Allegretto molto tranquillo.

@@Quotenwagnerianer thank you. It also helps that the liner notes and the score say Allegretto, not Allegro.
