Before that, the IBA at that time handled prize limits to £6,000. When the show debuted, the show gave special premission to receive the extra £400 in prizes. In accordance with the Broadcasting Act of 1990, the Independent Television Commission (who succeeded IBA) made a campaign successfully to lift prize limits on game shows, which led to several big ticket games, like "Lucky Numbers", "Raise the Roof", and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", the latter went on to be a hit.
The original series gave away 64,000 sixpences (colloquially referred to as ‘dollars’) which was £1600 however in around 1957 it was raised to 64,000 shillings, doubling the value to £3200 until the ITA imposed the winnings cap of £1000 in 1960. As far as I can tell the ITA (latterly the IBA) imposed these limits for gameshow prizes: 1960 - 1974: £1000 1974 - 1981: £2500 1981 - 1993: £6000 So for this show the producers needed to get special permission to give away the extra £400. The limit was dropped after 1993
Although 'The Golden Shot' was taped at ATV Birmingham, the later 'Celebrity Squares' and 'Family Fortunes' were recorded at ATV Elstree, as was his other ATV work including 'Bonkers' and LE specials like 'I'm Bob He's Dickie'. He also hosted for Thames - 'Quick on the Draw' in the 70s - made at Euston Road studios
I'd forgotten that it was only £ 6,400 & was the biggest amount on TV blah blah ! I also thought it was much earlier than 1990 ! I thought of this show because I'd remembered a guy Winning the Top Prize answering questions on The Rolling Stones & I knew all the answers !!
This quiz show really made you work for your money, in that there was the specialised subject in three parts. Quiz shows now are just general knowledge.
Him bragging about the top prize being £6400 just 8 years before WWTBAM is funny. There wasn't THAT much inflation... Brian's mutton chops are something aren't they
A Happy 96th Birthday today to Bob Monkhouse! I Always Enjoyed watching The $64,000 Question when i was younger, Especially with The Isolator rounds!
Dear bob as brilliant as ever
18:27. Probibly one of the most dramatic and visually impressive sights of any gameshow....and this was in 1990s. In 2022 still nothing comes close.
