The biggest difference I have noticed in scoring high or low is whether you walk the course or you drive on the cart. walking is so much better, you connect with the nature on the course, you feel the ground, the wind, everything. I played all by myself, no caddy and walking the course. I still finished in 4 hours and I shot way lower than my 20 handicap, 1st round 42 and 2nd round 38, adding up to 80. Walk in the course playas, you will improve right away and will notice the most important elements of your game, walking makes you a better player and a healthier person.

I love this style of teaching. No mumbo jumbo swing mechanics. Once you understand how to swing a club, golf is more of having a relationship with your swing and course. Having common sense on the management, listening to your swing and what you're doing. Playing into that. I see so many people fighting with themselves not wanting to play their shot for some reason chasing someone elses swing they dont and will never have. Dont fall into that trap playas!

From Richmond, Virginia, USA...this is such a great video that will help so many people if they actually apply your lessons... thank you. Sorry to hear you're ailing...a three month layoff is tough. Get better soon! At 64, I'm still playing to a low index of 0.9 this season, so no slouch. But if I applied these concepts, I know 100% that I'd have knocked another stroke or two off my index. Obviously, as I've gotten older I've lost clubhead speed so my distances have shrunk. However, I played golf for so long with my 'young man' yardages, my mind still doesn't accept my 'old man' distances. 90% of my distance misses are short misses. As I assess my rounds, I continuously have to remind myself to be true to my 'old man' distances.

Went out two days ago and shot 86 despite THREE double bogeys to start the round because I didn't go to the range. Played this style and even had a birdski on the back 9, a 20 foot downhill right to lefter. Hit driver twice. Mostly hit 4 hybrid or 6 hybrid or 5 wood off the tee because my wedges are reliable. Just get it inside 150 and I'm guaranteed no worse than a bogey. Last hole was driver then 7 iron, knocked it stiff on the green and made par. The guy I was playing with was 20 years younger than me, he couldn't believe the way I was playing. He was trying to bomb driver every hole. Only lost two balls, two weeks ago I was hacking like a TB patient, probably lost 15 balls! Potential strokes shaved is at least 6 so I'm potentially sub-80 once I clean up the chipping and tee shots a little. Matt's channel has transformed my game and my love of golf. I haven't even really tinkered with my swing, just playing inside my own game.

The tip about leaving an uphill chip short and a downhill chip long is absolutely gold. Also, the zen playa speech was much needed, as I’ve lost my way of the playa lately. Frustration has crept in on my way to shooting in the 70s. This mindset of taking the miss into account is literally money. What do you do to read greens? What is that routine for you? Can you do a segment on that ? Thanks playa and much love from Texas

Awesome treasure hunt for someone!!!! :) My negative thoughts don't enter the thought process until I'm over the ball, and when those demons creep in it's almost always bad. I'm good in the strat box, and the decision box, but when I get to execute box (and this only happens sometime!) the demons sometimes creep in. 'remember last time you hit the 8? you chunked it you hacker" Or 'Don't thin this and hit the clubhouse'. It all comes down to confidence with me, and the tight wire act of confidence is so ying and yang. Wish I could just bottle confidence and drink it before a round. It's ALL mental with me, I have every shot needed for MY game, just need to execute playa. Love this style video too.

In fact, I shot my best round ever (83 and I'm currently a 26.1 index). I only used 3w, 5i, 7i, 9i PW, 52, 56 and putter. No hero shots. Worked backward from every green and made sure all tee shots (except one) avoided trouble. The one bad tee shot required a 230 yard carry over water and I mishit it. Still snuck out of the hole with a bogey. Figure out a stock shot/swing and use the GIOTG strategy and golf will be easy! Thanks for doing this, Matt!

Matt, thanks for the great video. This one is worth its weight in gold. Course management is really the key to better golf. Maybe not lower scoring golf, but more satisfying and stressfree golf. Would like to see another one like this (maybe one where you actually miss, or have to come out of real trouble). HAHA. Thanks again

I need to learn more about how to practice. I recently picked up golf and I'm working on learning what my 150 club is for 150PSP, and how to hit it. Yesterday I went to the range, got the biggest bucket of balls, and just started swinging. Hitting thin, fat, missing left, missing right, I had all kinds of issues that I couldn't pin down and it was getting frustrating. I need to learn how to practice instead of just getting sweaty and mad.

I have seen pretty much all your instructional videos. Just passed 1 year of golfing. Love the breaking 100( best is 101 so far). Ive seen the bunker video. I like the way of the playa and have shots into the green we can make, few clubs in the bag, change the card to your par, GIOTG. Here is what I feel us playas are missing unless I have missed the video, we are missing a "Punch shot" video. I realize that is more a breaking 90 but I get into trouble and kinda wing it with a 6 iron or 4 iron. Would be nice to know what thew baus does.

Bunkers are easy to avoid. Hit the club that CANNOT reach the fairway bunker. Then, if you don't have a club that can carry the greenside bunker, hit short and take your bogey (or get up and down for parski). Par the par 3s and par 5s and you're shooting 82-85.

So much great stuff in here I need to implement. I'm currently off 17 and have gone up from a 14 since playing a lot of rounds at a tighter course with a rating that pretty low. The reliable club statement really hit home. In the last 4 or 5 rounds my driver has left the building after so many rounds of it being my powerfade cannon. I just found a 13* 3w that feels like about a 6iron swing for me so going to go for that club first. Really need to start playing these holes backwards like you suggest. My wedges and short irons are a strong part of my game, I need to give them a chance to shine as much as I can. The "string" comment as well. I can hit a hybrid a little over 200 and a 5w 220. I should be looking to play position with those on the mid length par 4's rather than risk hunting in the rough and trees just to gain the low percentage at a 60yd. shot in vs. a 120-130yd. full wedge in.

    • @GolfSidekick

I grew up on a tight course and the number one tip was look back from every green on a practice round and take it in. I discovered the 3 ironwas best for position and driver can be used strategically. I got to 0-1 handicap quick after that

Great video Matt. I’d love to know how to adjust shots and club choices for different conditions. Recently I’ve hit the same club short on a par 3 and then through the green the next day with the wind. I can never judge how much difference the wind will make. I guess it’ll come with experience.

And humidity and lie and how you feel that day.. Breaking 80 video is so good. I play 10mph less wind normal club. Into a 20mph 2 clubs more.. Unless its 4 hybrid distance. Than crush it

@@danielowen5889 think I’ll give that breaking 80 video another watch. It’s my next milestone but it feels a world away even though I’m shooting mid-low 80s on a good day. Yeah lie is another big one. I think it’s these little decisions on club choice and and trying the wrong shot from a bad lie that’s holding me back! I’ve been hitting a 3hybrid off the tee a lot recently. Goes low and under the wind!

I really appreciated your golf management skills. You have to think like a playa. I would like to see how perhaps a 7-wood could be a good substitute for a longer iron? 3,4, and the occasional 5s can be tricky off the deck.
