What's wrong with using power query editor instead of writing sql ? You can create any query you want using PQ gui then do writeback to a database with DAX studio (if necessary).

There are two main scripting language in the world of Power BI; M (for data transformation), and DAX (for calculation and analytics). These two are used in different parts of the Power BI solution. It is not mandatory to use them in a solution, but knowing them will help the Power BI developer a lot.
