- Opening up a Toshiba Satellite Pro L50-B to upgrade or replace the battery, hard drive, memory, WIFI module or optical drive.
Warning - perform these steps at your own risk and take antistatic precautions.

I was looking for a good review about the toshiba satellite L50-B-23F just to know how difficult is to remove the battery and upgrade the hard drive and the banks of ram.

No, no compressed air needed in this particular model. All you have to do is remove 4 screws from the CPU/GPU socket and 2 from the fan.
Now, disconnect the power wire from the fan to the m/b.
The next step is to detach an additional wire from the side of the fan.
If you've completed all of it, you can easily remove the fan.
On one side of the fan and the radiator, you'll see masking tape. All you have to do is take it off. If you've done it, you can take these two apart and if you have dust in between them, you'll have easy access now to remove it.
Put everything back together, but..., if the thermal paste wasn't replaced for a long time, do it. If no, you risk like big time.

Thanks for the guide. A heads up for those trying to replace their keyboards - it's nasty! Toshiba uses hot melt rivets to assemble this machine, not screws. You have to snap them apart to remove the top face of the laptop to remove the keyboard which makes it difficult to reassemble neatly.

If I'm not mistaken, you mean to tell me that I need to pull at the silver part of my laptop in order to replace my keyboard? the silver part that has the intel/amd stickers, and is around the keyboard ie.

Where is the cmos battery, and how to replace it or reset it?
I think they used the battery as the cmos as when you remove the battery the time will be reset in the bios.

This is bearly a teardown .... you removed the bottom cover and gave us a visual tour of the visible components :-/

the l50b i just opened up didn't have the cpu fan! I guess pentium n cpu doesn't need one.
fish lam - i wouldn't recommend changing CPU's in laptops due to heating concerns.
How do you remove the optical drive on this laptop? The only thing I see in my laptop is a plastic holder

I see nobody got idea to put ssd in place and instead of optical drive. So you have HDD and SSD in same laptop. Is that possible? Does optical drive area contains all the "wire" to connect standard SSD 2,5 inch?
It is possible but you will need a third party caddy or work out how to fit a drive int he space.

your back plate comes off easy mine dosent ive removed about 10 screws out of the back pryed along edges really gave it some force it aint budging like yours its like its attached in the middle somewhere i believe its got front screws somewhere ?

just found 10 million screws under the heavily glued on keyboard to fully remove the back cover that your upload has failed to show on my two toshiba L50's i would scrutinize any thing you suggest after that

(I've just cleaned a model L50-B-1DZ) for a client who had spilt hot chocolate in the keyboard (cleaned each affect key - could find a way to remove the frame and get to the chiclet keyboard). The system now mentions low power on the CMOS (need to set date and time), but couldn't find the cmos battery - anyone know where it is??

Hey man, this videos been so useful so thank you. Did that model have a graphics card? Mine came with an AMD card and I'm trying to figure out whether the hdmi port is connected to the amd or intel gpu. I want to try and force the laptop to stop using hybrid video and to use the AMD gpu only, but I can't do that if the hdmi isn't connected to the amd card.
I installed a SSD on the same exact laptop 11/15/2016.
When I reinstall the bottom of case, the cpu only runs at 800mHz,cpu fan is running on high it sounds like constantly.
I have turned it to high performance power,set default power,shut it down,restarted it, system restored, completely new install of windows 10 and my programs, still same issue.
I have removed case 20+ times and each time I leave it off it works fine.

Great look at the inside of my Toshiba Satellite L50-B for the first time ever!
I've got a problem with the hinge holding the lid/screen to the lower casing. One of them broke and I've no idea where to buy a replacement part or how to fix it. Calling in a tech can be very expensive and I'd only use that as a last resort, if I've exhausted all other attempts to do it myself. Please help?

Hi do you have any footage of removing the keyboard? The one i'm trying to fix has a row of keys that are not working (the V F R and 4 keys). I've opened it up but i still have no clue how the remove the entire board.

I spilled glas of water and immediatly turned id backside and turned it off after that i dryed with cool hair dryer and my question is it water 100% inside or it could be dryed from keyboard righr away?
Aleksej Stankovic I'd say the water would be right through it (even if only a minute amount). Give it 3 - 4 days to dry out before you turn it back on.

i have this model in a purple colour and next to the hinge, to the left looking at it, it has cracked and so my power input keeps moving and the lid / screen will not stay up correctly. Any idea if this can be replaced and if so where you buy the part? If there is one.

ive got the exact same model as this laptop displayed in the video, i was wondering where i would source a new heat sink. im having trouble trying to find one with the double panel for the cpu and gpu running from the same copper line.

Billias UA There are no warranty stickers but Toshiba can probably tell that the unit has been opened. Warramnty will probably be void but it all depends on Toshiba and the laws in the country you are in.

Radouane Samaali you can't change the video card. You can remove the battery if you like.

Eric Bescond some models may only have one slot so you may be out of luck finding a 2nd one.

Guides on replacing damaged screens in earlier models sound reasonably simple, however they mention removing screws from the front of the monitor, which I do not believe the S50T-B has...

I've got a horrible glossy HD screen I would like to replace, is it possible to upgrade the screen to a FHD matte one? screens.uk tells me that it is possible but I would need to change the screen cable, but they don't have a reference or provide the cable.
Sorry but I've never done the swap from HD to FHD on this model so don't know. Have you tried contacted screens.uk and asking for more info?
For reference, I've got an SATELLITE L50-B-1JR www.toshiba.pt/discontinued-products/satellite-l50-b-1jr/ and found that there is a similar model with FHD www.toshiba.de/discontinued-products/satellite-l50-b-1pw/ . The diference is the LVDS cable, the FHD needs a 30 pin cable. Already ordered the cable and screen, will post the result.

I have the exact same model except mines an i7 5th Gen, 8gb ram, etc. but the fans are always running too high. is this normal? with my old Asus with i5 was much quieter. it is still noisy whilst idle.
+Moustafa Sadek (moustafasadek11) I7 will run hotter which may be accounting for the noisy fans. Have you given the fans and heatsink a clean?
dpcomputing The laptop is brand new and I had opened it up and there is literally NO dust at all, even at the heatsink. It has come down to me thinking its a design issue or the fact it is an i7 with dedicated graphics.

The Win 10 key should be stored in the BIOS. You should be able to install a new HDD and install Win 10 fine.

My old HD is encrypted (dead/ caput). So my main concern was spending £ 60 to £ 80 on a new ssd only to find out I need to fork out another £££ on a new windows :-/
Phone up Toshiba support, they should be able to send you out a Win 10 recovery disk or USB drive for low cost.

Put back in the old ram if it starts - if it start then the new RAM is incompatible or not seated properly. If it doesn't it looks to be another issue.
is it posible to add a second Drive (SSD), insted of DVD unit?
I have heard of third party mounts that can do it for some laptops but am not sure with this model.

It should be (I didn't check to see if it is soldered directly on to the mainboard though) but I wouldn't recommend it - you need to confirm that the cpu is compatible with the bios and also may have to deal with thermal issues of a faster CPU as the case may not dissipate the heat correctly for a different cpu.

No. laptops aren't designed to have their video replaced.

I have this exact laptop right now and I can't agree with you more. I used to own an Asus (can't remember the model off of my head) but that was a lot better in my opinion.
Only take cover, what you take apart, nothing...
