    This presentation explores the role of behavioral and social sciences in boosting the effectiveness of HIV prevention and treatment programs under the 2022 PEPFAR Five-Year Strategy. It will examine how these disciplines intersect with each of the five pillars of the Strategy, highlighting their significance and practical application in assisting countries to achieve their UNAIDS 95-95-95 treatment and other targets.

    Andrew D. Forsyth, Ph.D., is a public health professional interested in the complex interplay between individual, social, and structural factors influencing health behavior. Until 2021, he led the California HIV/AIDS Research Program at the University of California, Office of the President, spearheading efforts to fund cutting-edge science aimed at bridging gaps in HIV prevention and treatment outcomes both within California and beyond. Previously, he served as the Director of the Office of Research and Science at the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), where he focused on integrating research insights to improve global HIV prevention and treatment services. Before joining PEPFAR, Dr. Forsyth was a program officer at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), managing a portfolio of HIV prevention research grants and centers. He is now an independent consultant, leveraging his expertise in public health and HIV/AIDS. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical/Health Psychology from Syracuse University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
