- The script is based on my book "Portland: An Illustrated History". Digitised from the original 1998 VHS tape, this is a potted history of the unique Island and Royal Manor of Portland, England. Many of the characters and interviewees are no longer with us. The landscape has changed and some of the features are now hardly recognisable, but the character and natural environment are still to be appreciated today. Written by Stuart Morris, a 'Video SouthWest' Production. Sorry, a small part is missing, shipwrecks etc.
Love Portland, I lived away for 50 years now, but it will always be home to me, my birthplace and proud of it .
I'm 10 and lived there my whole life
Fascinating history thank you for sharing.
Fabulous, thank you Stuart. Wish it was still like this today.
Awesome, loved watching this, thank you Stuart.
This is a delight. I come from an old Portland family (my Mum was a Comben), my Granddad was a quarry man. One of my ancestors is buried in the pirates graveyard (St. Andrews). Can't wait to go back for a visit this Summer. I miss it very much.
So pleased you enjoy it. As you'll appreciate a lot has changed since we made this film!
So proud to love and live such amazing place
I had the most wonderful childhood there, in my brother's words we were feral, but harmless
Lucky people to have been born and raised on such a beautiful little island
Thanks for converting and sharing! Great 38 minutes of education ;)
Very interesting
I always wonder who gives thumbs-down, and why.
Jealous Weymouth types.
I have your book then and now
The greatest place on this Earth, trully❤ Portland
I grew up on the island and spent my entire childhood living on underhill. moved away in my teens so its so nice to see this. so many memories of coming out of my junior school at underhill during the hot summer in the late 80s and walking down the cliff path to meet my parents on the beach who were regularly sunbathing there. we all had such wonderful brown tans! my mother worked as a cleaner at the navy base, one day she bumped her vacuum cleaner into prince andrews foot not realizing who it was! my parents and myself used to see strange aircraft sometimes. basically, ufo's on several occasions including the now famous TR3B. I was sad to see the shipwrecks section missing! that was always something i was most fascinated about! why is that part missing? wonderful video though thank you for sharing.
Yes, shipwrecks is a huge and important part of Portland's history, as is the Royal Navy, stone industry etc, all subjects which are well covered elsewhere. It was not easy to fit everything into the allotted time on this 1990s film.
SOMEONE DID A MAP IF PORTLAND GOES UNDER WATER AND I'VE NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD.
I was in prison there thats how discovered the place it dont worry it turned out well married with 3 kids return there as much as I can
Glad that you turned things around. Enjoy Portland when you can!
