- Part 1 of the story of the Island and Royal manor of Portland. The script is based on my book "Portland: An Illustrated History". Digitised from the original 1998 VHS tape, this is a potted history of the unique Island and Royal Manor of Portland, England. Many of the characters and interviewees are no longer with us. The landscape has changed and some of the features are now hardly recognisable, but the character and natural environment are still to be appreciated today. Written by Stuart Morris, a 'Video SouthWest' Production.
There's always something new to learn. Thank you Stuart for a fine production.

The lady talking about smugglers tunnels at about 22:30, mentions a Mr and Mrhs Hansford running the grovery shop. Am wondering if they are my relatives!! My father's parents definitely had a fish and chip shop but I don't recall any mention of a grocers. Julian Hansford
That was Kay Saunders talking. Unfortunately she died several years ago. I suggest looking in the Census records, or there are several directories, eg Kellys, showing Portland businesses in the early 20th century.
