Before I started watching you, on, I think, episode 3, I was an American who only drank tea once or twice a year. Then I started making a " brew" to drink when I watched, now I've got a proper pot, a cozy, and a whole new addiction! Still drink coffee in the morning, haven't turned in my passport or anything🙃, but TEA!!

12/11/2022 Hello Ship. One month until I catch up. Great work guys. About the sisters I understand. This is more than doubling the strength of the weaker member but not necessarily needing replacing. You have restored the strength but increased it by the strength of the original member. I think sisters are necessary sometimes. By bonding the two members together they will act as one member. The scvarf joints are very good also. This bonding and bolting replaces the member with enough strength to match the one piece original member. I Like this work. Good job. Don usa

It's funny how different training methods can be. Coming up in the trades, I was taught, "Do what you're told, how you're told to do it. Then, once you've completely mastered the how AND the why it's done that way and you still think a different way is better, change it and share it." Funny old world. I figure, end of the day, the work still gets done. Cheers!

You should build some portable camera mounts that you can hang over and bolt to the side rail of the ship, where there is a side rail, that also hang down far enough to mount a camera that can be used to file anyone working on the outside of the ship. Probably scrap lumber would go along way to make that happen and be light enough to carry around. Aluminum would be lighter and stonger.

I wish people wouldn't be so negative. It's actually really annoying. I can't believe how outspoken people can be and downright rude. Yet they continue to watch you. They'll be the first to start praising you when you get nearer the end. Probably couch potatoes 🥔

i gotta say, that while a grinding wheel does work for smoothing off the ends, you can get a drill which does much the same, only a lot quicker since you just need to put the bit on the end, spin it a bit and you don't need to spin the rod.

I had forgot to ask if you had preoilers on the engines? If you do then I would strongly suggest running them for about 5 minutes prior to starting the engines. This will lube the bearings and reduce or eliminate any wear on the engine at starting.

  • @RikSandstromCalifornia
    @RikSandstromCalifornia 2 года назад +2

Gemma, Why not just use non nylock nuts? Then remove them. It would save you some time with the grinding. When you remove the nut it will re-align the thread at the cut. The grind does look cleaner I must admit. As always, really enjoyed the video!

"Why not just use non nylock nuts? Then remove them. It would save you some time with the grinding."
Because that leaves a thin, sharp, uneven remnant of the cut thread that easily deforms and makes threading a new nut (especially a nyloc) difficult and prone to cross threading. You need to chamfer the thread to clean up the cut in any event so no point in adding an additional step.

Hi Gemma 😊 I really like channel and you really do have some “boss” ideas” Gemma, to be honest you are both really inspirational and I have now decided to get my 24’ Bayliner in the water this year after her being trailered on my drive for several years ! Any room in Heswall Boatyard ? 😀 I heard what you said about the threaded bar (stud iron) so why not clamp a nut in mole grips and spin the other end of the stud iron in a cordless drill till the nut is at the middle You could actually even do this with multiple nuts spaced at required points along a metre length by holding the nuts one after another in mole grips and “spinning” the stud iron with the cordless drill! till the nut reaches the desired point then turn it around and repeat the process! 😊👍🏻
    Best wishes Dave Flynn Liverpool.😊

Great job! Love the videos!! When it comes to cutting the threaded bar, have you tried a spring loaded thread chaser? It is like a die that has been cut into 3 pieces and has a spring buried in a channel around the outer edge (allow you to install it on the bar past the burr, then run it out to clean up the threads). Very handy tools!

I find if you cut the studding with the nuts on it often leaves the sharp burr on the end of the rod, I would do it the way your doing it. I've had a few cuts doing it with the nuts on myself. She'slooking fantastic, great job.

As a electrician for 30 years I found that cutting all threads at a 30 degree angle nut threads on everytime

Cutting studs wuth nylocs on also ruins the nyloc insert due to heat generated by cutting.

With the rate of silting of the Dee estuary, have you considered how long you have to complete the restoration before you cannot get the boat out of the river?

I can't believe how hard you all work. I never did like Mercury engines and still don't the top end revving is so extreme always sound like they are falling apart. A Honda Yamaha Suzuki 50 you would notice the difference. Good job not a Johnson or Evenrude as now gone for good.

It's a bag of spanners! Would love a Suzuki engine for it!

Would it be good idea to fit blanking plugs in to the ends of the trough fittings. Just in case leaver is moved accidentally.
