How we make our package bees

  • Today we made packages from hives in Maryland. We are a very small operation and not nearly as fast as the big guys.
    It was a fun day shaking, lots of laughing, and in the end just under 200 packages made.

      Thank you - there are not a ton out there, and we are super small. I'd love to see a few of the big guys myself. It took us all day with that many people to do just under 200. Roberts Bee Company (I get early packages from them) can crank out a LOT more than that before lunch!

    Good work fellas! This information is important. Helps new beekeepers know what a strong colony should look like and how much work pro beekeepers do to make packages up.

    That's a LOT of bees. Interesting. I have never seen this on a level this large. most beekeepers here are hobbyists and only do this to produce 1-2 swarms to replace a lost colony.

    Just throw in an queen excluder between the two boxes a week priir to shaking, so you just have to look for open young brood and not have to locate the queen itself

    You can use air to remove bees from the hive. Bees would be less harmed

      Nope, no almonds. To be fair, there was some serious drift at the end of the line where we started the video. Most were not that full.

    That’s one heck of an operation. I do prefer to raise nucs. It seems less stressful on the bees . Also do y’all do mite checks on all the colonies before shaking bees ?

      Thank you for watching. In the end we ended up with about 1 package per colony as an average. That counts some that we could not shake at all.

    These cowboys aren't using a smoker which would probably help settle the bees down; apparently their priority is to load bees into boxes. Then find a queen, full speed ahead.

      1.5 to 2, only do one round. Folks that do a ton of these south can hit them 3 or so times and do more. I'm just trying to take the swarm out of them

      In one video I watched a beekeeper who created 340 colonies out of 40 colonies. So on average, it can create 7 or 8 new colonies from one colony.

      ​@@adrianistrate9166In fact, 6 or 7 colonies can be produced from 1 hive of bees. This is possible in a place with a temperate climate, which depends on the length of the season in that region. This person is doing this in a region with a Mediterranean climate.

      You're not wrong, it would be a little faster. Mark as we see them is always on the list, but always moving to fast to pull it off. We did see most queens on the first pass though.

    I am an Italian beekeeper and I don't like what I see at all. Bees are not objects. I would never buy anything like this and I hope no one else will. Lorenzo

    Why package bee's?? It's way to rough way to slow for build up way to much failures once sent way way to much stress for the bee's it's a disaster.. sell nucs so much easier, so much more pleasant for the bee's and keeper..

      I sell nucs too, each have the pros and cons. Especially in my area. Very early flow.
