Make sure the bike you buy will suit the sort of riding you do most often, this might be a hardtail or a full suspension bike. Try different sizes to see which you feel most comfortable on, and budget for extras such as a helmet and knee pads.

Where are you planning to buy your next bike?
Online. But I'm satisfied with my Canyon Spectral for now, it's not even finished yet ;)
Private 🙂 i bought brand new 2018 custom build speci enduro with xtr groupset etc 2000 euro
2025
Walmart of course!
I'm either gonna get a Lynskey or a yt next, there are shops for both here so I'll go down , then again, if someone sells an s size Polygon Collosus t8 , I'll probably get that, it's been the bike I wanted for years.
That would be online for second hand bikes. Plus I know the bike fits me perfectly, I tried the s and m frames when it first came out and the l frame because it was the last one in the shop and they really wanted to sell it . Surprisingly, all 3 sizes felt okay. But s is still my preferred size
Time to watch "how to buy a mountain bike" from IFHT films again...
best video ever :-D
LMAO JUST WATCHED IT BEDORE THIS COMMENT FOR THE 100TH TIME XD
I just watched that aswell haha
@@billmill423 same hahaha 😂
Ikr it do be like that
Henry is a legit addition to the channel
Sometimes I have a hard time catching up with Neil's accent, for Henry on the other hand its super easy for me as he speaks very clearly and at a pace where its a lot easier to understand him. Both of them doing fantastic work tho! :)
As a mechanic at a bike shop, I can confirm knowing customers by their bikes. They walk in, and I'm like "Blue and white Fuji Nevada?", but I couldn't tell you their name.
Markus Klemm feel ya man. Can’t remember your name. But def by the bike
I work in a pizza shop and mushroom mark comes in on a monday and pepperoni pete comes in on a Friday and 🤪
God damnit now i have to watch "how to buy a mountain bike" by IFHT again. thanks.

@@alfonsomonzon9713 100% it's fantastic.
I watch it a least once a month!
I watched it 3 times and I still get it recommended
Would strongly recommend getting one of those online only bikes if you know what you already want. Value for money is so much better.
Also no bike shop will offer you 30 days to test it on your local trails. Also you will still get support and repairs from proper LBS.
Hey gmbn, just wanted to say I love your videos and your tutorials, you have helped me to bunny hop and manual, thank you for making these videos :)
That's great news Itzhak! Thanks for watching 🤘
Buying a new mountain bike really is the most fun and exciting feeling
About to buy my first. This channel has been great. Have no clue what I'm getting into and have used you to study up.
Great to hear Lars! Hope you get something great 🤘
First step: get the budget Second step: get the bike.
It’s not that easy
Does trek marlin 7 is worth for mount biking
Please reply
Kotari Santoshsharma For sure it's good for starting
The marlin 7 is a xc bike, if you want trek go for the x calibur series. These bike are meant for trail riding
It’s very cool too se you at my local bike shop
This helps me a lot thanks guys
Perfect timing for this video. ive been looking at buying a canyon torque or a few other options
Look at all those bikes. It's 2021 and there are only 2 mountain bikes in my entire local shop. I can't wait for all the bikes to be back in stock.
thank you for the tips and also this is a great video keep it up
Bought my last bike at my local bike shop. I don't have much experience and I could demo and check a few bikes. In the end I bought a last season cube stereo they had in the Shop with a nice discount. I'm really Happy with it on the trails I usually ride on. Even used it to Ride to work.
great video guys, you brought up a great point about the dropper post as i bought a vitus escarpe in a size large and it came with a 150mm dropper post but because of the seat tube length its to big for me so i had to invest in a 125mm dropper before i was able to ride it comfortably, since installing that bike fits like a glove. wish i had understood more at the time but making this mistake has made me understand a lot more about how the numbers effect the bike i want to ride and the components that i want to put on it
This video appears to be aimed at beginners, but features really expensive bikes. I think most beginners will buy a budget bike. Not necessarily a nasty steel one but certainly at the cheapest end of the real bikes range. My latest bike was about 250 GBP. It's fine and handles well. I had to upgrade the brakes and tyres just to feel safe on it, but even then my total bike cost to date is circa 350 GBP and it is standing up to a lot of punishment and it handles very well. Of course it'll never be quite good enough, but I'm glad I went down this route, upgrading and tailoring an entry level bike rather than spend a couple of grand and then still not be quite satisfied and still have to upgrade and tailor.
I work in a shop here in the US and I get a lot of new riders that think that full sus is only for experienced riders. I tell them full sus is a great choice for all riders, safer more comfortable and often faster in rough stuff! Full suspension is great for nearly all riders!
Hey, would you be able to tell me if the carrera vulcan (Small) is good for a person who is 5'4?
@@Metalshark100 Yes
@@1911Zoey haha thanks, I have since gained a little bit more knowledge and have gotten a grip on how big a bike I need. Definitely wouldn't go for anything above an 18"
luv the content keep it up
I love how you always have more likes than views at the release of each video. Love your vids! :)
RUclips takes a little while to get the visuals up to date! It needs a few hours to stabilize and show 'live' numbers :)
you couldnt time the release better, thank you
This is like when I watch agressive car and PC builds on RUclips.
xD I'll never buy a bike brand new, unless aggressively discounted; the rig I've built for what I've spent building and buying used compared to what I'd of gotten from a shop, can't even compare.
I have the Habit 5 2020 and I love it it is really good.
Something I didn't know when i got my first bike, many don't come with pedals! I had no idea. Luckily the place i got them from (jenson) threw in some cheap plastic pedals to get me moving until I could order some real pedals. Make sure you check before you buy.
Only had my bike a couple of months, crazy but actually bought one related to my age and kind of riding I’ll be doing. Plan is then to upgrade and learn about components or buy a higher spec one in a year or two.
The amount of blokes my age riding full suspension, pricey models and only riding it along the side of a canal.
Amazing video!!
Not sure what I'm doing here but I decided to buy my first MTB and went with a used $80 Diamondback Outlook on Craigslist. Probably got ripped off given the condition it was in, but after a few sessions of cleaning, de-rusting, de-greasing and a fresh application of dry lube... it's all the bike I need! Enjoying the local urban trails near me.
I recently brought the Virus Sentier VRS and did a bike check on this so feel free to check it out. I really recommend it 😀😀😀
Bike shop for me. I just pop in for bits and Bob's, quick fixes, services. Then, when it came for the big bike I just got, I got good advice and a discount. Also, free service, BB change and I got to ride my new bike before I bought it.
Thank you I ended up more confused on what to buy
I like hard tails because I like having a lighter bike and also I like to be able to eat food after buying a bike
you guys are the best, when travel opens up come to Alberta!!
Sound advice. use visit mud dock next time i'm in Bristol, it looks awesome. Cheers guys.
"Maybe a lock."

Awesome vid thx
Great video guys, I’m 33 getting back into MTB after 7 years off the bike and finding it a complete mine field. Love trail centres but also like local rides from my home. Been to three bike shops and although helpful I just can’t get my head round the different options, wheel sizes, massive tyres, travel that seems longer then a motorbike....help!!!!
Best thing to do is demo a bike.
Great vid im buying a new bike this has helped alot
Great to hear Carl!
Henry is what if Blake and Doddy had a baby!
I have almost the money for the rockrider st 520 from dechatlon Im gonna buy that in april when the good weather comes.
I like the new dude. Does a good job.
Nice advice...LOVE show #mtbFOREVER
Step 1: Watch IHFT
As soon as this came up👀
Well if you're lucky enough like to live in a 50km radius of canyon for example, only shopping isn't that necessary at all.
But I can fully recommend canyon, even tho the waiting times can extend (sadly).
Anyways my canyon torque meets a lot of her sisters everytime I'm out on the local trail ^^
How I bought my mtb: Went into the shop and got the cheapest one. I don't even know about sizing. It was a 26" hardtail and it cost me about $110. Got that in 2016, only changed the chain, crank bearing, brake levers, calipers and pads, fd and tires. Still using it till today doing some 50km cycling.
It's not just a choice of big brand bikes from a local bike shop and direct sellers like Canyon. They might be sponsors of the channel but there are many other better options including retailers who buy their models direct from the factories, Giant who manufacture bikes in their own factory including frames and wheels rather than brands which buy frames from a real manufacturer and resell them and of course secondhand. You also need to factor in what exactly you are going to use the bike for, no point spending a fortune if its going to be a general use bike that also does light trails occasionally. Calibre bossnut is a very capable dual suspension bike that has sold for as low as £850, it could match a Cannondale for spec at somewhere between £1400-1800. Lastly try to buy in end of season sales when you can get up to 50% off in the UK. The yearly refresh of the range often offers very little extra and sometimes can be worse so makes a lot of sense. Just don't buy the rubbish models that are left on the shelf for good reason.
Wow nice video 😁😀
Just bought a new GIANT Talon 27.5 a week ago, LOVE IT !
Local bike shop
@@adammackenzie im looking at the talon 1 2020. Im a trail and some rough riding biker. The reviews are good but not the best reviews on the front suspension and shifters. Some say upgrades are needed. Is this true? They asking 1199 for the bike. 29 inch wheels. Or the 2019 talon 1 for 1099. Out here in nova scotia canada. I wish they had more colors. Also looking at the giant x caliber and some trek bikes.
I have a talon 3 love it
Spent all my money on an expensive mountain bike. Then realized there is no mountains what so ever where I live so now I can pedal in the sand and grass through 600 km with the price of a car under my ass to find a hump. Worth it.
Great!
Watching this after i bought my new bike last month😂
How To Buy A Mountain Bike? Use money!
Not choosing the correct size will be pain in my balls
It's a lot more complex, noob. You have to consider your height, the tyre size, tyre PSI, suspension and frame size. There's also MTBs best/good on roads/paths or only off-road terrain.
Does weight play a role as well? I’m 5’10 250lbs but I am pretty muscular. Gym is life.
Well , I wanted a new bike so I went and ordered a 2022 Giant Trance 27.5 in aluminum , that simple .
I got a trail bike on the higher end of travel for the "trail" name, and probably should have gone with an XC bike given the terrain around me. I am finding my trail bike is a little bit overbuilt for what I do on it.

Timing can also be a huge factor. It's a holiday weekend in the states and I purchased a complete Salsa Beargrease Carbon for much less then just the frame price msrp.
Christmas time ?
If pivot ever crafts something better than my firebird 29.. then I'll consider buying a new Enduro rig.
I really want to know where you found the habit in this colour and spec.
Could you also please do a video focused on how to sell a bike
I'd like to add that I ride a very different size off road (smaller) than on the road
I'm buying a Bike later this yr to get around Chicago. It's ideal to get a Bike that's durable and the tires strong. Mountain Bikes are my favorite
For "getting around Chicago" you want an ugly beater that nobody would want but is in mechanical good shape. Bolt cutters will go through any lock. Take your wheels indoors with you. On second thought, take a taxi.
Ibis Ripley Or Fezzari Signal Peak, I live in Utah and Fezzari is 20 minutes away from me but I’m in the 120-130 mm game with XC background but wanting to get into more aggressive riding but not too aggressive

My budget was 3k , which is about 1.7k in pounds.
I just went to the bike shop near my house, they sell Polygon, Marin and Colnago.
I wanted a full sus with a 2 by 10 drive train. I got the polygon siskiu d7 for about 2.1k , which is around 1.2k pounds
I'm also between sizes , my height would allow me to use both m and s frames , I took the s. Fun thing is that my arm and legs are actually long enough that I can ride l size bikes if I want to.
The bad part is that I still haven't cut the seat post so even though it's as low as it can go, it's only a little lower than the height for pedaling efficiency.
On the bright side, it means I don't ever have to change the seat height.
Cars are great especially if the weather is bad. But I live in Illinois and I prefer commuting on a Bike. It's more convenient
Wish more bike shops sold frames and better prices on them as well
I can see bike shop numbers dwindling in years to come with more people buying from online retailers at better prices and spec and only a few more used shops staying open
Im 178cm also,between M and L.getting a used trance 2017 M
My Rant about buying a bike. (tl:dr)
1. Pick the right time of the year, In Aus, where i am from winter (april -sept) is the right time, sales slow and new models are coming out so its easier to get a bargin. Nov and Dec are the worst times as most shops are flat out with the chrstmas rush
2. Choose the right shop, if there are 50 road bike and only a few MTB maybe find a different shop, you will probably get a better built bike and they will be able to offer better advice and service, Maybe find the shop that sponsors your local MTB club
3. Dont get caught up in the Hype, Just because all the top pros are running 31 inch wheels and 40 speeds doesnt mean the you will get any benefit from them.
4. Consider a bike thats a lower spec and is not "top of the range", that is model 2,3 or 4, do you really need that $400 top of the range aerodynamic lightweight gold plated seat, the money you save can be used to buy some upgrades or 2nd set of tyres and track pump.
5. Know what you shouldn't compromise on, like wheels and cranks, cheap ones wont last long, breaking these will be dangerous and expensive and probably ruin your day.
6. Ride the Demo bikes on a decent ride, Most good shops will have a couple of bikes that you can test out, you will be surprised how much different a bike feels on an actual track than in the carpark of the store.
7. If your an average/casual rider who wants a bike to last more than a couple of years seriously consider ease of use of parts eg Mechanical disc brakes, Hydraulics will be more hassle than benefit with leaking and servicing requiring special tools not to mention putting it in/out of a car
8. Buy a 2nd set of tires for rides around town or on cycleways. A good set of Semi slicks will make your rides in these areas so much more enjoyable and save your knobbles for grip in the dirt. With practice (and tubes) you should be able to change tires in less than 5 mins.
9. Go and have fun on your new bike.
Is Cannondale habit a good bike?
Very interesting video guys. Looking at the canyon lux but only available with grip shift in North America at the moment. Am considering just giving up and settling for the grip shift. Would be cool to see how you changed yours and compare the two types of shifters. Is grip shift really that bad? Or has it been executed well on this bike? So many questions about the different models of lux. Canyon certainly don't make it easy to decide.
Which bike did you end up buying?
I rode mountain bikes most of my life, only recently I realized bmx was my calling. There maybe more like me out there!
Judging by your likes I think you're the only one... Be positive;you are unique! But not really...
yay, i buyed bike what is perfect for me. Stock build and still perfect!

Can you recommend me im 175mm and the frame i would like to buy has 420mm seat tube length it is right or notm
One up actually makes a 210mm dropper check it out brother.
Hi I am a 6'7" guy at 255 lbs. I'm curious where and what kind bike I should look for? Thanks. I'm a beginner looking to ride casual trails
hi just a question about polygon bikes do think they are good or are there better options
Going to the bike shop is a lot more fun than looking at pictures on a screen. Slightly more risky for people who impulse buy though. That's what a friend told me.
..."a Friend" 🤔 is it you? 😂
#askgmbn I'm currently riding a hardtail in the Colorado Rockies. I have a lot of people telling me I need to go to full suspension. This summer I plan to take out some bike shop full-squish demos. Since I can't do this back to back to back, only so many hours in a day, I would like to create a bike evaluation form to remind me what to think about and note after a ride. End of the season I will evaluate my notes and figure out what I think would be best for me and probably buy used. Do you have pointers on what I should pay attention to so I don't have to start from scratch?
I'm over 6 ft tall. I like bikes with good tires. I ride it a lot. And it wears the gears are important.
cool vid man, what is the blue bike at 8:04
I was like this when I bought my first proper bike, wanted the best bike for my budget. I'm really a size small or X small but there was one in medium for cheap well £750 where normal £1200 so brought it. Worst decision... Didn't fit well so cannot get confirmable. Bike shop did say they would recommend a small frame but I went against them. Listen for the wise. Buy the correct size for you! End of! Doesn't matter how good of a deal you're getting fit is everything
I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a bike I bought online into my local shop. I know a lot of their margin is from parts, service, and accessories, but it just feels wrong to bring in something I bought online. I can do a lot of maintenance and repairs myself, but there are some things you need a shop for, and I personally would feel scummy bringing in an online-bought bike in to my LBS.
I know the feeling, but many of those shops would certainly appreciate the repair, tuning and upgrade business also?
My local shop is Halfords, there terrible. I only go Halfords if I desperately need to other than that I’ll order online
I love the grammar on the thumbnail guys! Nice video though!
Do bike shops allow renting bikes in order to test it?
Hey GMBN, I know your sponsored by canyon but do you recommend them for good quality, bomb proof bikes?
“it’s important you don’t get carried away”.....if I could follow that advice, I’d be a rich man.
ALWAYS GO ALL IN!!!!
In my case: Plan a budget, go to the bikeshop, pay the double of your planned budget
Happens all the time. Heck I'd venture to say almost 3x your budget after accessories and upgrades.
@@barbaroacosta5335 you are right. Few weeks after I wrote this comment I bought another bike. It was 3 time as expensive as planned 🤷♂️
So in doing races and its a big uphill then a long down hill what would be best can i get recommendation annyone
Hey y’all, awesome vid. Quick question, Neil mentioned he would get a bike with better suspension and a cheaper drivetrain because you can upgrade the drivetrain later on, but can’t you upgrade your fork and rear shock too? I know suspension might be more expensive to upgrade but it’s still upgradeable right?
Yes, My frame is more than 10years old but the only other parts on the bike that are "original" is the headstock, bars and seatpost. I upgrade as they break or just thru wear and tear.
Can you do a video about used bikes
The boysssss
Looking at a merida 120 400 should i get it
I have a shite hardtail thats meant for beginners and im ok 👌
You have very little content on folding bikes which are more practical for people living in urban area. There also a wide variety of them like the carbon fiber foldies with 21sp group sets by Java Bikes and Sava Bikes. Sava can be ordered on ebay. Can you do a series on the EAST VS WEST brands of folding bikes and put them to the test for various riding situations? Sava and Java VS Dahon (USA), Birdy (USA) and Brompton (UK)?
Know your style!!!!, enduro, dh or xc
I'm 5'9 which is around 170 m, so why size should I use? For mtb?
Guys what do yall think about the gt avalache sport 2019
IMHO, you'd rather add some cash and get Avalanche Comp. The price differs not so much between these models (at least in my country, Ukraine), but Comp is perceptibly better than Sport from the "specs per price" point (Alivio/Deore transmission, Shimano hydraulic brakes at Comp, rather than Altus/Alivio transmission and Tektro hydraulic brakes at Sport).
Other than that, GT Avalanche is pretty good budget bike. I'm currently riding Avalance Comp 2016, and 2 my coworkers recently bought Avalanche Comp 2018 and Avalance Elite 2018. They seem to be satisfied too.
I always expect 10-15% of the bike if I pay with cash and use that on my pads helmet ect
If the shop don't do it I don't buy a bike with them simple as
They want my business not other way round
Omg same;if the bike is like 500$ I'll say :"450$ is a done deal" if he says no I just show extreme carelessness and he will come back to me later because no one is buying it...
