I've had RUclips premium since it was RUclips Red. I always forget RUclips has ads until I see people complain about it. It comes with RUclips music. The whole family can use it. It's a no brainer. I heard about the download thing years ago, i always download smaller (non-gigantic) youtubers videos, especially a podcast like this where he will get 2 hours of listen time credit even if i never hit play. I wound up listening to it all, but still
The tackle box cracks me up because I remember the video of you covering it, and I remember thinking I need to do that but forgot about it. Thank you for covering it again! It’s perfect!
The Fender/Tacoma/Ovation/Guild story was mighty interesting. Agree about the highly-regarded quality of Guild 12 strings. Hell, I think I remember seeing John Denver playing a Guild!
Speaking of shim material and imperceptible differences, I'm reminded of when my brother and I shared a car and were both quite broke. He liked to light up with the cigarette lighter and I got to thinking. My idea was that all electrical power in the vehicle ultimately came from the gas engine. Therefore, it stood to reason, the lighter would hurt mileage, so I asked him to use matches instead. This was during gas price hikes. My brother told my brother-in-law, a certified Ford mechanic, and I got laughed out of several rooms for a long time for being a total cheapskate!
New Years Eve: I have enjoyed watching Rick Beato's show which ends a bit after 9PM Pacific Time, but then I'm getting ready for bed. If you start at 9, I might catch you for a few minutes, but then I'm out. And since Arizona is among the last populated time zones to hit midnight, most of the world has gone to bed.
Thank you Phil for another great and interesting Podcast. I would like to see the pedal board build. Would be interesting as I have never had a pedal board ( maybe that's because I only use 1 -3 pedals ) and I would like to see how it's done. Take care and thank you for all you do for us guitar geeks!
I love my Engl Ironball but it did take me some time to appreciate it. As 5150 6505 guy Engl is a whole different world. For playing high gain metal It's so tight the distortion character will expose your playing if your picking is not tight and precise. I wanted to sell it at first but so glad I did not. About 2 years later and I absolutely love this amp. Probably cause I suck less at playing now.
Glad that I bought the same model Walmart Tackle Box soon after you featured it on your show. Works well and will reconfigure the set up in the near future.
Yes- we want the live stream on NY's eve- please. I'm in the process of trying to build my first studio board. I've built plenty of live performance boards, but never a board for the studio. I'm running the UA Lion '68 and their newer Knuckles dual rec sim. I have no idea how to set up a board with two different amp sims, I assume I can run them in series- right? I figure I will just stick it right beside my Lion and just turnoff whichever I'm not using. Or maybe I'll put the Lion in front of the knuckles- either way I think it will work. I do have a JHS switch back though- I could isolate each one to their own signal path- now that I think about it, that's what I need to do. That way at any given time I won't have so many pedals in the chain. I'll have two separate signal paths that join together right after the amp sim so that I can use the same reverb and delay on each of them but they'll both have their own drive section, compression, etc.- anything that goes before the preamp. Makes sense to me. But yeah, it would be helpful to watch you do one- and fun.
My first guitar was an ovation. Cat Stevens did it for me. Paul Simon, Lennon, REO, McCartney, Glen Campbell, and others all played them. I am left handed and it had no pick guard and was symmetrical all the way around so everything looked good even though it was a righty model. It's been with me for 50 years now, still singing.
Thank you for answering my question at 1:49:58, Phil. I've always loved your contribution to the guitar community, even years before you had a podcast. And yeah, I actually had to leave my home country by force with my wife and 2 cats to avoid losing our jobs. Long story. I wrote down every gear related advice you answered. I just want to know if you rather go to the local "Yamaha Musical" store I now have near me here in Bogotá, or rather order something specific from Amazon? I love bass and every other kind of guitar. Love your content and I thank your team and your wife for supporting you all these years. I'll become a member and supporter very soon, just wait till I get my credit card ready 😅 Thank you guys and gals and Happy New Year! 🎊🎉🎆🎇. 🧉
I recently bought a 1990 Ovation Collectors Edition shallow, sooper nice. short $, extra good condition, low mileage. very comfortable player, articulate, focused tone.
Found a coupla useful nuggets in this one, Phil! I WAY agree on stacking OD PedalsI I've found that pedals like the TS9 and the Stevens Rockaway Archer are compatible with Drive Pedals I'd usually consider to be "stand alone" units--because of their subtlety involving Tone/EQ. I've had a '76 Ovation Country Artist for years...and still love it--although the combo of Composite body and Spruce top REALLY disagree with the E. Sierra "high and dry"! 😧
Copic is like an artist grade magic marker with various tips and lots of colors. They can get pricey. There are lots of fake ones around. We got some of them before deciding to just go to art supply stores and pay retail for the genuine article. My daughter was into them before she settled on working in digital art on a tablet and PC.
In a World, in the year of the Lords Of Light 2024, while the rest of the YT guitar community lapses into premenstrual, 12 year old, playground idiocy, this is where the Real Ones will continue to come. Unmatched audience interaction, for years, honest advice, impeccable manners and honest to goodness knowledge of the Craft. Thanks, Phil McKnight and to everyone on your Team. Merry blah-blah and a happy etcetera to you all. XxX
Dry air is even worse in Minnesota winters. We can get down to 20% easily. I've got my guitars in the case with humidity source and bluetooth gauges so I can monitor without having to open the case. I play less, which sucks but I was having too many repair issues and this is cheaper I think. At least I know I'm trying.
My brothers like to track beer company mergers and buyouts, which is fine, but for my money stories like your one about Ovation are a lot more interesting!
Ovation is a Sleeper kind of Guitar and is crazy in Tune for years unused too … the most unique tone for its carbon fiber back but gosh paired with the best preamps in it
I've played a bunch of acoustic basses in a wide range of prices, and the Thunderchief is by far the best I've played. I wish I'd have bought one when I had the chance. Now I don't have the need for one
16:35 I used to have a lot of problems with some Boss pedals that were connected to mains power until I realised the ones didn’t have a battery in the compartment made a lot of noise. I fixed the problem by connecting a dead battery to the pedal.
@Monk Bucket..."Should I swap out the PUs in my Firefly FF338, or just try adjusting the ones in the guitar now?" Monk, we have taught several hundred young students (kids to college-aged) and we needed good starting-guitars - less expensive, let's say. But we also wanted those guitars to 'age' and survive (the woods, the glues, frets) for at least a few years. Firefly's were a great answer to this. But could they be resold? If someone put in $150-300 on a Firefly, was it Lost Money or was there a resale value - ie, was the guitar junk because of woods, fretboards, frets, etc. YES. Firefly's gave us that. Further, our local luthier would come to the schools and do a morning 'camp' where he taught various levels of cleaning, string changing, tuner changing, bridge swaps AND ELECTRONICS. The most important factor - we preach - is play the Firefly long enough (hundreds of songs? hundreds of hours?) so the Owner 'knows' what those pickups sound like, what they can and can't do, what pedals can (or can't) do. AND THEN change out pickups. ONLY THEN does the Owner 'know' what the new pickups 'do for him', sound-wise. Without a very thorough knowledge can the Owner have a feel for his wise/not-wise change-out efforts and costs. Only then. The same can be said for almost every other cheapo (and not-so) guitar. "Git to know yer pickups" - don't pretend there is some acoustic different in hollow, semi-hol, or solid body guitars. NO. THERE IS NOT. The distance between Strings and Pickups is TINY compared to the cubic volume of "tone wood" or design. Pickups ARE The Sound of the guitar - NOT the guitar, paint-job, etc. Of course, to make the guitar aesthetically appealing or INSPIRING - well, that's a whole other issue.
By the way, Line6 is a top-line guitar-modifier company that inserts their magical computers into guitars - usually Strat or Tele styles. They use Yamaha cheapo versions of those bodies which, to me, says "Line6 uses Yamahas because they know THEIR work will not disintegrate over years and decades AFTER the Line6 modifications." So, the $200 Yamahas look almost like a 'guarantee' in quality workmanship. But so do many others, too.
My first acoustic guitar was an Applause. Can't remember what happened to it. It played well, but I never liked the sound of those round back guitars. Too much mid. Many years later, I bought a $650 Tacoma. It was by far the best sounding and playing acoustic guitar I ever played. Mine had some finish and a glued on neck. It was so much better than the entry and intermediate Fender acoustics of the day. I donated that Tacoma guitar to a local after school rock 'n roll music program. I hope they are still using it.
Dig your talking about the boxes and stuff and how you use them but it starts sounding complicated and I'm glad I have my line 6 because it puts out enough craziness for me to deal with you know all those different voices and the stuff I don't even use the echo doodad and what not but it sure can be daunting or it can be awesome with that slapback it helps me do original stuff which I sure wish I was doing something with

+1 for NYE PedalBoard Live Stream Extravaganza!
Yes, to the NY podcast
Every show is a good one. Thank you Philip
Heck yeah! NewYear’s Eve Live stream. I’m on board
If I have to shim my neck I always find a vintage business card from 1959 to use. It makes the tone unbelievable.
I bought the Squier Jazzmaster 12 string last year and I absolutely love it. Fantastic guitar, totally unbelievable at that price.
I'd be into a New Year's eve pedalboard. Thanks Phil and Shauna for all you do. Happy New Year to all.
love the truth you spit to the public. your commonsense approach is refreshing and better than most. keep going.

You could buy a one room humidifier so you could leave them out on the stands.
It would be conducive to playing more instead of less.

Happy New Year Phil!
One thing Fender Custom shop won't do: You cannot order a left-handed version of the Yngwie Strat or the Page dragon Tele from the Custom shop.
2:00:00 Tim Buckley too, basically was typified by that Guild 12-string he played
Yes to pedal board new years eve
1:19:55. For me this is also true.
They make sense.
Losing interest in anything else.
I have the red tackle box.
I would like to watch the live stream
Those blue Lace pickups look like they are covered in painter’s tape.
Yes do the stream please
Noisy boss pedals? Ditch the One-Spot and get a high quality pedal power supply. Costs a few hundred but it makes all your pedals sing. If you have more than three pedals, you need one. My experience was like that anyway.

Off topic: Has Phil visited the Grand Canyon?
The last time i bought a SUNN amp first it blew the 18" speaker for no good reason. It was covered under warranty but I had to pay all the shipping. I traded the head and cab for a GK head. The dealer lent it out to a SUNN supported artist to play a gig in Manhattan at the Bottom Line. The amp blew up on stage and caught fire. Good thing i ditched that turd. A Coliseum 300 head and an 12 x 18 cab. Garbage.
Speaking of Guild 12~strings, I understand the octave pairs are strung large string first, smaller string second. This is opposite to any 12 I've seen. My theory is you'd always hit the lower bass sounds with your thumb. Does anyone know?
Ric’s are strung this way as well.
So this turns into QVC, Phil gets rich, we have to watch another channel for guitar info?
You forgot to post a link to the YT Channel with the 'scammer' company expose..[you call a 'documentary']
I was checking out the 12 string Squire online. I went to guitar center to see if they had one but they did not. I am tempted to buy one but I never have played a 12 string and I need to sneak it in because the wife said no more guitars. So unless o find it at a guitar store I cannot sneak it in.
Who are the dodgy advertisers on RUclips? Genuinely curious.
Get another rebel 30 .
I used to use a business card or a matchbook cover for a shim. These purists are out to lunch. I've only been gigging for 40 years so I guess i have a lot to learn from these you tubers. Or NOT.
What people need to understand, when you sell or trade your gear to a reseller, your only going to get wholesale value.
Iv always heard it's not tht ur using a shim but what u use for the shim material .
I saw a vid recently from Glazers ín Nashville and they were using sandpaper under the nut . So there's tht . My theory is Phil knows what's up . There ya go .
2 hours? Who you think you are Joe Rogan? Hardly
Is it weird to want a guitar you hate? Because I've always hated ovation guitars but also have an unexplainable urge to buy one just to maybe prove my bias.
Copic Markers
Ovations sucked so
