Got a steak pie, hadn't heard of the butchers till I had a look but it wasn't far away, it was packed full of meat, I was surprised at how much meat too. £2.70, so obviously more expensive than a pukka or Holland's (or is it at chippy prices?) , but it was worth the extra.

      You have to wonder don't you if the family that owns Pukka are on a massive push with all these new product lines to sell the business... they have launched so many new product lines - but whoever is doing quality control and deciding on th value for money needs replacing. They are a shadow of their former selves.

    That really did look appalling. I always thought that a panel of taste testers give their opinions to the company before the food goes to the public (they even do that with cat and dog food🤢) so the lot that tested this muck must have all been having an off day.

    • @Bobario1
      @Bobario1 11 месяцев назад +2

      So do they get dogs and cats to try new flavours or does some poor sod have to tuck into dog/cat food for a living? That's not a gig I'd like to try!

    • @saddaddrummer
      @saddaddrummer 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@Bobario1 Apparently so, In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, a dog food tester named Philip Wells explained what he's actually looking for when he's tasting samples:
      Although dogs’ palates are different to ours, taste is an important quality check to ensure each different ingredient is perfectly balanced in just the right way... Trying the food is also a good way to pick up on the nuances of the cooking; this works especially well on the dry kibbles. Not a job I heard about when I had a visit from my careers advisor.

    • @PippetWhippet
      @PippetWhippet 11 месяцев назад +5

      My theory is that the testers taste something made fresh from the kitchen by a chef, after the recipe is finalised but before the recipe has been adjusted for mass production/shelf life/accountants. It’s the only way some of these travesties can be explained, or maybe no testers were involved/pukka knew they had a failure on their hands but pressed ahead anyway because they know it will sell and they can pull the product before word gets out.

Changing ingredients to cheapen or creating bizarre new products out of weird combinations is going to lose existing customers and put new ones off. Hi Gareth from Spain. Nah. I have always viewed Doner Kebabs with considerable suspicion. They heat it up, let it cool, heat it up, let it cool, day after day - that can't be good and it's ideal conditions for nasty bugs to grow. I'll stick to my own cooking. Just had the chilli with cheesy topped tortilla chips - very tasty but near blew my head off (I think I put a little too much chilli pepper in.) I also put in some dark brown sugar and some dark chocolate which take the top off the heat.

      To be honest much of that £1.25 was paying for air, they are usually £2.00, that amount of filling is taking the p*ss.

    So sad Pukka pies started out so good , full to the brim & all the favorite fillings. How 10 years have changed things , you can buy better cheap pies in the best buys down most supermarkets .

      Things like this always start out great in order to hook the customer and then the quality takes a nose dive and the cost increases so you end up paying for less.

    About the most disgusting thing I have bought recently was Brains Faggots from Iceland. These used to be meaty balls in gravy decades ago. I thought I would try them again after many years. The ones they sold me in Iceland, were just a small lumps of grey mush. I don't know if these were specially made versions for Iceland?

    I can see it was reduced to 1.25 , hardly any meat and tasted awful. I have a family of raccoons living in my backyard, and I don't think I would throw this out for them . Thanks for the honest review as usual Gareth ,you save people a lot of time and financial pain .

    I always remember fondly sleeping at my grandmas once as a kid and we had a doner kebab for tea and the next day she did what any good grandma would and made the left over doner meat and garlic sauce into a pie. A lot of years ago but i remember it being absolutely banging. 😂

    There's no messing when you buy Holland's pies!
    Doner Meat Pies are a treat for the bin.
    I couldn't eat them.
    On Saturday Kitchen each week the celebrity guest gets asked 'What's your idea of food heaven & food hell?'
    They say what they like & what they don't like then the public vote & depending on how popular the celebrity is the chef host cooks whichever receives the most votes.
    You couldn't & would never say a 'doner meat pie' would you - would anyone?
    That meat will be whatever is left on the cow, eye lids, bits in between hoofs, gums, lips & earlobes.
    Pukka are taking the proverbials.
    I bet they cost about 7p each.
    Can't have my tea yet - they've knocked me a bit sick.
    I'd welly them French terrine's you had on the other review.
    They looked good.
    Been trying to find them online as a Christmas present.
    Another informative & educational review!
    Cheers lad.

    You know paying more for less has been going on for as long as I can remember. Candy bars used to be 3 feet long when I was a kid and only .25 cents. Now you can hide a whole candy bar in your mouth and it costs $2.

    Pukka achieved their goal. You bought it!
    Buy a pukka pie and puk it in the bin...
    They must've taken a leaf from the Aussie beef kebab with sweet chilli sauce 👎😕.
    Don't know where the red and green peppers idea comes from but it's not on a Aussie kebab ingredients list unless you ask for a Turkish shish kabob.
    So why are the British using it, beats me.
    Nevermind Gareth.
    I'm sure there's another nice pie out there waiting for your review.
    Cheers 👍😀

    Pukka, just lost all credibility with this, on every level! I don't understand the logic of these food manufactures, obliviously profit incentivized and driven, giving us as little as possible for a ludicrous price. But who would ever buy this crap again, after getting caught once. Only someone in need of serious therapy.

    When you see that 7.5% "meat" you do wonder what percentage of it is meat. Everything about that pie was disgusting from the ingredients to the lack of filling and the absurdity of calling it a doner kebab pie made from beef with sweet sauce.
