  • What makes the Superior Hiking Trail the best first thru hike? A combination of incredible autumn scenery, a wonderfully well made and marked trail easy to navigate, towns that are no more than 50 miles apart, and campsites that are on average just three miles apart. A friendly community surrounding this hike, and mild weather all add up to a really great walk across Minnesota. So for anyone aspiring to do a hike like the Appalachian Trail, start here first!

    For someone wanting to get into thru hiking and long distance hiking, I think the Superior Hiking Trail is the perfect place to start. Everything about it is friendly and helpful, and I don't just mean the community of hikers surrounding it. The trail itself is extremely well marked, maintained, and all around easy to navigate. The towns are not far apart and on average just 50 miles away from one another. The climbs are frequent and the footing can be tricky, but it's still nothing compared to many other trails out there. Water is abundant, and campsites all have latrines and benches. The weather is mild and bugs aren't so bad in September and October. There aren't any significant roadwalks, while many other trails have tons. Everything about this hike is just a good time. A great place to learn, to try new gear, and to practice skills or spend time alone in the woods.
    Add on that this hike is otherworldly in the autumn months. Every color you could ever imagine just exploding all around you. Having done the Long Trail of Vermont, the Appalachian Trail, and the Pinhoti Trail in the fall I feel qualified to say that the SHT has the best fall foliage and colors of them all. So if you love leaf peeping, crazy colors, fun lighting.... this is as good as it gets! Every mile of the entire hike is bursting with fall colors.
    So all this to say, this is the best beginner thru hike, the best first thru hike, the best place to try new things, the best trail for fall colors, and all around just a great time.

    Your hike at this time of year was wise as you missed the greatest challenge of hiking in Minnesota: the mosquitos! Great video, SHT (in my home state) is now on my list, for a fall thru-hike!

    Superior is largest by surface area and contains more water than the other great lakes combined, but Russia's Lake Baikal, holding 20 percent of the world's freshwater, is largest by volume. Superior is third by volume.

    I live in Duluth, MN. which is close to the southern terminus of the trail. I think about fifty miles of the trail runs through the town. I've hiked many sections of the trail and have done a week long hike from the northern terminus south. It is quite beautiful. It nice you enjoyed the trail.

      The SHT is perfect for it! So many sections along this trail are really incredible, the only area I would say is not as good as the others is south of Two Harbors - north of Duluth. Other than that small bit it's all great

  • @HikingAtlas
    @HikingAtlas 5 месяцев назад +1

    I agree with everything about this trail save for one aspect. Getting too and from the Northern Terminus(NT) is or can be a challenge and potentially expensive. There is no public transportation from Duluth to Grand Marais that we could find. One of the trail angel contacts we found wanted $250 for the trip. Understandable….it’s 110 miles or so one way just to Grand Marais from Duluth. It’s another 35 miles to the NT. We managed to find a trail angel on FB who gave us a ride all the way to the NT (gave him a hefty “donation” because it was a great ride and conversation along the way). We started after Labor Day 2022 and hiked to Grand Marais and needed to get off for an emergent health reason BUT we met some great people there. A guy who saw us walking down the hill and gave us ride to the campground and then a tour of the city and to dinner!! The next day we met a couple who gave us a ride all the way back to Duluth. This trail is definitely worth the iffy logistics though. Absolutely beautiful! We will return in the next couple of years to complete it!
    Thanks for the beautiful video!

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  5 месяцев назад +1

      I just did a quick look and it appears there may be a bus now which travels between duluth and grand marais, though I don't know if that's current. If it isn't then definitely trouble! I'd be interested in hearing someones experience who had tried hitch hiking there or back. In theory it's just one direct and long road, and I've hitch hiked further than that before too! Still not an option most would want to go about, I'm just curious. A lot of trails which aren't a loop and something along these lines is a reality unfortunately. The 250 is a lot but it's not unheard of. When I did the Sheltowee Trace I paid the same to get back to my car after finishing(by a company who i knew the owner!). On the Great Divide it's 250-450$ to get a ride back from the end. On the long trail I paid about 200 to get to the northern terminus. It would be amazing if there was a bus of some sort that went that way. Otherwise trail angels are.... angels! And hopefully can help some along the way.

      @@JupiterHikes Thanks Jupiter! I was told then that they used to have a bus that ran up and down between the two but it was suspended during Covid and never restarted …. Maybe it has now.👍. Once at Grand Marais I think it might be fairly easy to find a ride to the NT. The city buses in Duluth are great if you need to get around that town. (Also I thought you might appreciate that my wife is starting the FT in about a week. Hot Diggity!)
