Mary has always said “there’s room for everybody” in the industry. You have to be your own person, don’t let the labels & industry tell you “you’re gonna be the NEW so & so”. This is a big problem in the industry. Mary has embraced a lot of the NEW generation of R&B singers like Jazmine, Elle , Queen Naja, Summer & CoCo Jones, etc etc . Her Strength of a Woman festival embodies & embraces BLACK WOMEN . ❤

I think Janet Jackson is the most imitated but never duplicated artist in history, Beyonce, Aaliyah, Ciara, Selena Normani, Britney. JLo, and the list goes on. All of these artists have acknowledged verbally in interviews Janet's influence in their careers . Janet has been very gracious to all of them and doesn't feel intimidated because she knows that her Legacy as the blueprint is set in stone and can never be replicated.

Mary ain't had a duet with a woman since Faith. And Faith never even liked the damn song she said it fit Mary better. If you listen to the rest of the album... Thank you for this video - - a very balanced take on things. What you left out is that Faith was a songwriter and did reference tracks/ vocals for some of Mary's songs - - this is how she got mixed with Puffy and Bad Boy. I'd like to see a "BluePrint" series of videos - - you can start with Janet Jackson.
Mary is often imitated but never duplicated. I have seen her in concert several times and she was outstanding. You can feel the raw pain in her music. Long live Queen Mary the Queen of hip hop soul.

I must commend you on your research. And thank you for sharing both Faith and Mary’s comments about the disappearance of Mary’s vocals from “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”. For me, Hip Hop RnB was an acquired taste when it first came on the scene. I was strictly old school RnB and Club Music until I heard Mary sing Real Love. I thank Mary for all the female singers that followed her into this genre of music. Although each of the singers you mentioned in this video may have been influenced by Mary or were taught to emulate her by producers, each artist has evolved into their own signature style. She definitely deserves her crown and her flowers for being the Queen of the genre.
It’s funny because I don’t think Keyshia Cole gets enough recognition either. She got so many hits. When I worked at Cheesecake Factory they used to play Heaven Sent and one night the entire restaurant was singing it 😂

_Growing Pains_ is the album that really did it for me. The whole album knocked from start to finish, top to bottom. 12-year-old me was rocking. The same way I feel about Mary is exactly how Luther felt about Dionne, Patti and Aretha (especially Aretha). I understand that labels push people to be similar to past artists, but do we really think that there are not similarities with people in general? Sometimes it's not just about a copy it's just a similar style period. 1 person does not have a monopoly on a certain style.
Exactly. And Faith and Mary both being from the east coast, they grew up not far from each other so they have a few similarities but they're not the same. Keyshia being all the way from the other side of the country with a similar style to Mary is something else. Faith is more like the R&B version of the Gospel Great Karen Clark. The only person in this video that I think could be compared to Mary is Keyshia. They may have put Faith on a Mary wig for a minute, but Faith's swag, music, and vocals was completely different, and all real music heads alike that knows Faith would agree. Faith sings her ass off and never tried to water down her music to sound like Mary. Was Faith music inspired by the new hip hop sound that rnb was embracing at the time, somewhat. But so was SWV, TLC, hell, even Mariah Carey. Mary's ego is/was through the roof, and a lot of that shit was petty and uncalled for. Even if the girls were inspired by her, that is what artistry is about, and I'm sure the foundation of Mary was influenced by some of the greats before her. Mary needs to quit, and so do you.
Say what you want but Mary is petty, for her not to speak to Faith (BIGGIE's WIFE) during the funeral, and side wih the side chick...she petty. I also think MAry did ask for her voice to be removed off of the track "Love dont live here anymore", simply because you can hear on that track that Faith was singing circles around her. Its ok to have your favorite artist, but dont let them blind you from the truth
................ Unpopular opinion: Faith was and will always be the side chick. Kim was there before her, during her, and sadly after. The only thing that makes Faith not a side chick is that to get back at Kim for any number of bogus reasons Biggie put a ring on it. Neither are that innocent, but to blaspheme Kim for what Faith also did?!? Na can't see it.
@GoldenRainbow1987 Well from the mouth of both Faith and lil Cease, Faith had no idea Kim and big was a thing until she caught them. Even Cease said that big treated Kim and introduced Kim as his hommie or artist. Only Big real close people knew he was knocking Kim down. Faith also was cool with her because Big also told her Kim was the hommie, never knowing Kim was the hommie with benefits. It's was told on drink Champs, Faith book, and a lifetime show called "Hopelessly in love".
@@GoldenRainbow1987 You're about as delusional as Kim. Lol How tf was Faith the side chick when she was the WIFE!? Whats crazy is that the majority of these female artist do not have control over their image when they start out in the music industry. When they first get signed, the record label creates their image and tells them “ you have to look, act and be this way to sell records”. Its not until an album or two later when artist renegotiate their contracts is when you see them going in the direction they want to present to their fans
Love Mary, none of these ladies compare. With that being said, Mary sounded mean and bitter to all these young ladies even when they gave her nothing but praises. It’s amazing they all pretty much have the same story.
First off, I loved and enjoyed how you dissected this video. Very respectful and very well done. My take aways, no artist should be groomed to be like someone else and honestly, it's normally not the artist fault. It's the labels. This definitely can be annoying but the irritation has to be pointed in the right direction. I like how Mary said, she understood what they were trying to do with Faith and the marketing behind it. So she didn't blame her. However, you can be a loyal friend and still show, dignity, compassion, respect and grace. That whole funeral story is horrible & I went through something similar. I am hearing people say she doesn't collab with other artist out of insecurity. This is definitely not true. People collab with who they want to & who wants to collab with them based off interest etc. Keisha Cole, maybe over it now but she definitely took that no personally. MJB is not the only person that has turned down collabs. Anyway, she has collab with several people throughout the years that she felt and/or that her label felt was a good fit. It's just business. Lastly, I'm a firm believer in the word no and understand that, that one word is a complete sentence & needs no justification. However, personally sometimes I think it can be a pleasant thing to explain why. Maybe, no I'm not collaborating with anyone at the moment, I don't know if we would be a good fit based on our styles, I don't think I can commit to new music or collabs at this time, etc. But rather it's no with explanation or not. No, means no & it shouldn't be taken personally. Move on! Love Mary. She is a phenomenal artist with a huge catalog although I'm not always a fan on the live vocals. TRUE LEGEND TO ME! 🎉
Mary J Blidge is a legend and I feel she doesn’t get her flowers! She’s paved the way for many artists of this day and she’s living proof of overcoming adversity❤️

It’s very valid what Mary felt. And actually it’s quite sad it’s always done to the female artist only. Like the same thing with Mariah being compared to Whitney and then later the public tried to usher in Ariana as her “replacement”. Or Lady Gaga to Madonna and then Natalia Kills Beyoncé to Rihanna and Ashanti, Aaliyah to Ciara and Cassie and even each other (Aaliyah vs Beyoncé) like it’s so tiring and very unnecessary.

Whew! When Mary hit the scene she changed the game! I was around 18. You remind me came out. Then the remix with Greg Nice from Nice & Smoove! 🎶" yo Puff that's that knock right dere boi"🎵 then the bass drops! 🔥🔥🔥
Proud of you keep up this channel!
Hip Hop Soul is Mary J….she’s the icon so….
So Mary definitely reaching to hell and back with Faith, but she caught Keyshia red headed.... I mean, "handed".
@@TakenBySirprize69 💯 agree
IMPRESSIVE I JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO ESPECIALLY WITH THE LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE VOCALS STORY IM A HUGE FAITH EVANS FAN ACTUALLY IM A FAN OF ALL OF THEM 😍🙏🏾👊🏾🎤🔥🔥🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Good T-E-A!!! Never heard these comparisons broken down like this.
Here I was thinking you were going to do a video on blue face drama and you pulled out this!!!! Always a pleasure watching your videos!
Mary probably forgot that at some point in life she would love to have someone that she admire to give her opportunity to collaborate with her
Hello 👋🏾 people like Aretha, Chaka, and Patti all collaborated with her. She looked up to them
Baby Mary is in her own lane! No one can compare. I like faith but not as much as I love Mary.
How whitney felt about Mariah. How Mariah felt about christina,Ariana, Leona, and the entire industry!😊
Mariah didnt have an issue with anyone but JLO. Because JLO couldnt sing but was sleeping with Mariah’s ex to try and rub elbows with high execs in the industry to boost her career. And it worked.
Whitney ended up becoming friend with Mariah after they actually met tho and they eventually collaborated together on the Prince of Egypt soundrack. And what do you mean by "the entire industry" in regards to Mariah ? Is it about J-Lo and Tommy Mottola ?
These celebrities think they are higher than what they really are.
Whitney never had beef with Mariah, she just hated comparisons. They even joked about the comparison at an award show with a cute skit.
@@marissawilson4644Exactly and no one can say Whitney didn't embrace other artists. She loved seeing them shine and gladly wanted them to bring their A-game. That woman loved singing with peers meaning ones who were singing just as long as her as well as with ones after her
I loved that you covered this story. I’m a fan of ALL OF THEM! I was 10 years old when Mary debuted and I’m a HUGE FAN!! I’m also a huge fan of Keyshia too. This was good!
I feel like Faith was more R&b based and Mary was more Hip hop Soul as they labeled it. They were both great but no the same, not to me
Thank you! Not even close to being the same, plus Faith adds that dash of gospel to her R&B that Mary doesn't have. Mary has tha hood hip hop soul. You'll dance at first but prolly end up crying by the end of the night, but aye, love hurts right? Wrong! Because Faith got the smooth, soothing R&B that will have you out here making kids you can't take care of. And then leave Reasons or All This Love on repeat so you can sleep to that. Lol
Yeah, I never saw the correlation then and still don’t. Completely different styles.
My mom met her back in 90s said she was very stand offish and seemed as if she was unapproachable.
Kim having Big first meant absolutely nothing to him if he still married another woman while him and Kim were broken up. It's not okay the way he treated any of those women, why y'all continue to romanticize such a toxic ass relationship when that man was pistol whippin that woman will forever have me rather fckn perturbed. And yes, Mary was petty as hell condoning her friend fckn a married man but had all the heat in the world for the woman who swiped her husband. That shit feel different when it hit home huh? But the good news is that was almost 30 years ago. They're all cool now. So none of it really matters anymore.
I love this analysis, it was spot on. Would it be possible to do a similar analysis on Nicki and Cardi? I know you have done it before but more like an updated timeliness from when their beef started to now and what in your view would take to mend their feud?
Absolutely GREAT and much needed video. Thank you doing this. Mary was most definitely a fashion forward trend setter and deserves all of her flowers!!! 🎉👑💐
Y’all give Mary too much of a pass 😂 she gives DIVA in the negative light even if you see her at award shows the last couple years. I still love her tho she IS the queen of hip hop soul.
I love a fan that isn’t bias your comment is so accurate
I thought so too but I now think Mary is just very guarded. She has gone through a lot and takes her time in getting to know ppl or trusting them
FACTS
@@onlyh8720Nah Mary BEEN like that😂😂😂She’s hella insecure because she knows that she’s not the best singer Chaka Khan had to check her a few times about her attitude and lack of respect for singing…Mary would literally party all night and give subpar effort in the studio The stuff she went thru was self-inflicted. She just act shy & humble in interviews so fans give her a pass🙄
Love love love Mary...but girl...😐. None of these people mentioned ever gave me MJB influence. They all had their own sound and style.
Unfortunately Mary has been known to be insecure and that can cause a person to be more upset about comparison. No one can be Mary, no one! Not being able to love your self will keep you upset about someone “ trying to be you” because no one can be you! It’s Mary!!
Mary and Faith both had huge talent and label machines behind them creating these iconic styles and music. Chucky Thompson (RIP) who produced for both of them said Mary was the streets and Faith was the church, they brought different things to the table. I wish Mary and Faith can completely bury this beef, its been like 30 years! I still want the Verzuz too
Mary and faith is cool now. Faith and Kim is even cool now
Their hasn't been beef between Mary & Faith since 1998. They've been cool with each other for years.
I really wanted Mary and Faith to pop up and Sing Love Don’t Live Here Anymore during her tour with Nas she performed a snippet of the song before she sung You+Me(Love Lesson)
9:37 Keyshia is lying or somebody lied to Keyshia, Mary was not getting upset on that interview and Mary did not say don't go there... I remember Mary saying good things on that interview about Alicia Keys, other singers and saying that Keyshia Cole had a story to tell..
I really enjoyed this video!
There will never be another Mary. This woman is an icon she has gotten me through a lot of heartbreak I love her style mary will always be in my play list.
Period!
Well then you are in La La land cuz she’s been getting her flowers.
I feel the same way about Nicki as I do Mary, THERE IS NO COMPARISON, so why do they even let it ruffle their feathers!?🤷🏾♂️
My Life is still one of my favorite albums. So beautiful and heartbreaking.
Pink and MJB are 2 complete different artists and great in their own right.... I love pinks 1st album, and she has never reminded me of MJB.... Love Mary also of course. And don't see it with Faith either.... Love her too.
Mary is definitely the blueprint for a lot of R&B girlys and I just realized it, she deserves all her flowers.❤❤❤
I don't think pink was comparison to Mary, she had her own style, but Mary did need faith on her album because my life was the shit and faith writing and background vocals helped that album, so to me, Mary needed Faith's skills to boost her album up
You sound dumb. Mary didn’t need Faith.
Speak To The People!!’❤
I absolutely love her song 'Don't Go'. Faith's background vocals were the truth.
@@Stephanie-ArmyVet yeah, don't go, never wanna live without you and gotta believe, those songs where the hits and everyday it rains from who's the man soundtrack, faith wrote and sung on that
💯💯💯💯💯
Mary got a story to tell and I would be here for that Movie or docu series.
Faith’s book was amazing.
She put a documentary about for the anniversary of her album My Life on Amazon back in 2021
@CandieP @@AngeBiampandou and there's a Lifetime movie - 2 parts - about her, came out this year I think.
@@essedarden4690 Oh I didn't know that. I need to check that out. Thanks for the recommandation
@@essedarden4690 I saw that one. I guess I was thinking more like a New Edition 3 part series for Mary like they did on BET.
As much as I love Mary. She vocally cant hang with any of the women mentioned. Mary has her own way of singing. Shes the Aunt who sings in church choir and can carry a tune. And she's cool. MARY IS A LEGEND. but her and Ashanti are on the same level vocally.. Not great singers. But they put their heart and souls into every word.❤❤
It’s very valid what Mary felt. And actually it’s quite sad it’s always done to the female artist only.
Like the same thing with Mariah being compared to Whitney and then later the public tried to usher in Ariana as her “replacement”.
Or Lady Gaga to Madonna and then Natalia Kills
Beyoncé to Rihanna and Ashanti, Aaliyah to Ciara and Cassie and even each other (Aaliyah vs Beyoncé) like it’s so tiring and very unnecessary.
This reminds my of Nicki Minaj's situation with Cardi B and Latto as well as Mariah Carey's situation with Ariana Grande no one wants to feel like their being replaced
Can we not forget that alllll of Mary's album's are lit! 🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤👑👑👑
