This is now 49 years old. Still moving. Kirwan reached a creative peak with Future Games and Bare Trees -- much musical maturity for someone who was in his early 20s. The Kirwan/Welch overlap period was short, but unbeatable.

Danny Kirwan was a true songsmith! And sung and played so beautiful, I have never heard anything close to his talent. So sad he got lost in his wilderness. R.I.P Danny

Danny Kirwan's contributions to not just to Fleetwood Mac,but to music in general are very sadly overlooked..The quality of his songwriting is
    unquestionable..otherworldly.

@@davidevans3227 I was with Danny from 1969-1971 lovely musical genius...quirky fellow, loving and sweet ...terrible life after Mac...I went to UK in 1994, Clifford ( old manager )wouldn’t tell me where he was, told me he didn’t want me to see him that way....to remember him the last time I saw him 2/72 on east coast tour...I wasn’t with him at that time but still friends with the band, so I went on a small leg of the tour...Peter Green and Danny were pure musical geniuses ❤️

I heard Danny was a perfectionist (not unlike many of us) and is why the rest of the band welcomed his leaving, too bad really when you hear the passion in his style of playing and voice. There is much to enjoy on all albums prior to Lindsey and Nicks! Open up your minds, it’s a gift...

    • @stevovimy
      @stevovimy 3 года назад +8

I've also heard bob Welch was extremely jealous of Danny's talent and would goad him about not being up to scratch. As far as I'm aware this is what led to him smashing his guitar and subsequently getting sacked from the band.

    • @RobbyByrne
      @RobbyByrne 2 года назад +6

@@stevovimy It was written that it was an argument over tuning. What did you hear? There is no question Danny's musical abilities far surpassed Bob's.

    • @clarkmacgowan5114

@@stevovimyBob was extremely jealous of danny. Danny was a far better Guitar player, by a thousand percent. Better songwriter, better singer, and last but not least Danny was drop dead gorgeous and Bob Welch look like some kind of little gnome. That might not sound like enough reason to dislike somebody but in the world of rock and roll and attracting women, Danny was absolutely angelic.

You can tell bob Welch is rushing the rhythm. That coupled with Danny's nervousness is probably what leads to it being cut short. Peter would play ten minute solos, but I feel like the band didn't give danny that respect despite him practically leading them at this point.

    Woman of a thousand years
How are your sons of a time ago
Do they still admire your silvered ways
    As you go down
To the sea and golden sand
You may be seen up in the sky
    And from the land
Or floating by, a fisherman's day
    Flying down from a high
She is gone, and then appears
    From the water's edge
    Woman of a thousand years
    He waits to see you...
You may be seen up in the sky
    And from the land
Or floating by, a fisherman's day
    Flying down from a high
She is gone, and then appears
    From the water's edge
    He waits to see you
For it has been long since you left him
    On his own to wander
    Woman of a thousand years
How are your sons of a time ago
Do they still admire your silvered ways
    As you go down
To the sea and golden sand

    the best Fleetwood Mac
albums for me. The early seventies we're
a dream. For the Roses by Joni Mitchell
Led Zepplin's Third album, Donovan, Jethro Tull,
the whole Soft Machine, Fairport Convention
    Canterbury thing.
    today
These are the things 'Radio Head' strives for.

Well, it was 1971, and the contemporary technology of the day restricted the quality of the audio. TV production in those days had little or no emphasis on audio (not did it in the last 80's when I studied TV production in college). The fact that in West Germany they actually had these live performances on TV and documented them is a credit to German TV production.

The only FM song that has yet to have been digitally remastered, is, sadly, one of Danny's best.. "Purple Dancer", with Danny and Jeremy Spencer trading licks (not Bob Welch, as is commonly assumed). That song is a real cooker.. and I finally found a good copy on a German "Best of" tape from around 1971. There's a few alternate versions floating around, but they're no match for the original. If you get a chance to hear the oriiginal, have a listen to it. It's excellent...

Yes 1972 was the year he was fired for going nuts and breaking up the dressing room then refusing to go on. Afterward he sadistically critiqued their performance without him....Mick with tears in his eyes fired him. Greatest loss in FM history...even bigger than Peter Green because they had no lead guitar player after that and a year later I saw them get booed off the stage in '73 with a Danny-less lineup. What a loss...this era of FM was the best(Kiln House-Bare Trees). And if you don't believe me search Fleetwood Mac in Seattle 1972

Remembering Danny Kirwan born on May 13, 1950. He was a British musician whose greatest success came as guitarist, singer and songwriter with the blues-rock band Fleetwood Mac between 1968 and 1972. He released three albums as a solo artist from 1975 to 1979, recorded albums with Otis Spann, Chris Youlden, and Tramp, and worked with former Fleetwood Mac colleagues Jeremy Spencer and Christine McVie on some of their solo projects. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Kirwan

MT3, Nice one. Danny hasn't been given due credit by any stretch of the imagination.
PK9, I'll look that up, thanks. It's nice to see posters here expressing their appreciation for him. Band dynamics being an area I wouldn't want to go into--the touring, the personalities--but after such a long time . . .

Neither has Welch, he wasn’t even inducted into the RRHOF with FM because he dared to sure them over cheating him in royalties.

Nice bootleg, love this era of the Mac, but the video is faked -- doesn't match the audio

Video is from some other song. How could they mess this up? The other songs from this Beat Club performance are fine. Dragonfly and Lay It All Down play fine. Too bad.

Great song. It has a Talisman sound to it from Burton Cummings/Randy Bachman but it was the early 70s and a lot of bands had similar styles.

This must have come within days of their performing "Dragonfly" on Beat Club. They're all wearing the same clothes, I could swear. At any rate, the Beat Club video has great sound.

I've often wondered if there's a full recording of this performance. It feels like it's the same night doesn't it? To me it feels like Danny has so much extra solo power in him but he's being curbed by the rhythm section to finishing early.

It's a shame that the sound mix is so bad, the instruments all sound far back in the mix and the vocals are muddy, and out of sync
