I was already pretty familiar with anodizing, but this is by far the most straight forward and beginner friendly video I've seen on it using regular household supplies. Great job.
@@mediarare1014 Doubt you'd be able to because of stainless' ability to prevent oxidisation, which is what's needed in this process. You could pull it off with Aluminium as well as Titanium from doing a search, but Stainless Steel, or even Carbon Steel don't agree with the process and won't come out like above.

They did one other with a para 3 where they rit dyed scales and darkened the blade w/ apple cider vinegar but it was much more free form and less scripted but i get what you're saying.
@@BladeHQ I'd recommend showing how to acid etch and stonewash blades with ferric acid and a jar of rocks as well as copper plating. Both are fairly easy diy customization projects. Could also probably do some engraving
I was working for an electrical contractor 15 years ago and I worked the service side. Every year around Halloween we would go into all the apartments we were responsible for servicing and replace the 9V batteries. At the end of it all we would series up the batteries. FYI the batteries start arcing through each other a little over 300 volts. The batteries will start to smoke when you close the circuit.
This video inspired me to try it this weekend. I did two knives and I love the results on both. Thanks! P.S. a helpful tip: Whink rust remover takes off any prior anodizing, so if you mess up, it's super easy to start over.
Its interesting how Zac can make anything look amazing and not boring, i tried to watch some of these kind of tutorials on RUclips before and i never watched them all the way thru but this one i did so i think Zac is doing something right.
Good stuff! Don;t forget to make sure all lockbars and such are either removed or covered (clear nailpolish works great) cause if you have anything more conductive, it'll bypass the titanium. For higher voltage colors, also try and do both scales at the same time so they match, it never works QUITE the same twice

It's just a good habit with every battery hookup, no matter the size or voltage, to hook up the positive first, then the negative. At this level not a big deal, but at higher amps it can make a difference in generating shorts. Just a good habit to apply to all battery hookups. Positive is the first one on and the last one off. Cool video!
This is a great way to kick off this new series. I didn’t think it was difficult to anodize titanium. I’ve got a butterfly knife with titanium handles that will be getting a new look! Keep them coming!!!

Yes but not like this. Different metals require different solutions and most common steels only requires an acid/oxidizer. There are videos of patina and staining.

I did this with my titanium Tactile Turn pen. I went with 4 9v batteries to get a nice blue. But the end result came out to be more of a burnt titanium look with multiple colors. It looks awesome! But do you have any idea why it didn’t end up one solid color?

powder coating is the way to go with aluminum... fairly easily achieved if you have a spare oven at home that you dont intend to ever cook food in again.
I'm hoping someone with more experience can extend a hand of knowledge. Would the voltage for desired colors be the same for tool steel? Looking to do this to a hammer with a steel body (the ones with the rubberized grips). I don't know if the difference in material being worked with, would affect the voltage needed to achieve the desired color.
Cool series! I just happen to be carrying my BHQ D2 CF Pilar today. I like that you kept it simple, but using etch (multi etch works best) and a power supply is a big step-up and isn't too expensive. Also, I find that having multiple points of contact with the part helps a lot... My favorite project so far is a Kizer Feist with blue scales and pink clip and back spacer

Definitely gonna try this out I've been flaming my Ti and can get pretty consistent results but theres always dark and light spots this method looks awesome for a nice perfect finish
I noticed 2 things with the samples you anodized, (and when you did the scales) you had the battery connection made prior to immersion into the solution which looked like the first portion of the samples had a slightly different color or darkness...wouldn't it be more uniform if you immersed the parts into solution FIRST before making battery connection? This also might help if any bubbles formed on the piece while inserting and you could remove them a toothbrush or small brush would be able to rid them from the part before making battery connection.
Neat stuff, didn't realize how fast the titanium turned color. Not a chemist but even I can probably pull this off but my OCD would probably want a perfect anodizing job so I'd be meticulous on cleaning. Not sure how cost effective it'd be to daisy-chain 10 9V batteries but I'm a fan of bronze. You got another sub.
Blade HQ acid a stainless Damascus like damasteel. I also mentioned above about a battery etch. You can cut your own logo from tape then use salt water and battery to etch on blade. It would be best if you can replicate the beskar of mandalorian

I have one question for you guys. How do you guy seal the color on your knife so it doesn't rub off so easily? The reason am asking is i do anodize for a living, I make the tank solutions for anodize and and run parts for anodize. So you guys mite what to make another video soon.
anodizing aluminum uses a different electrolyte solution, but the process is similar. The main difference is that the oxide layer on aluminum is basically colorless and you have to dye it after the anodizing process, after dying it you then boil it to seal in the dye. the plus side is that it doesn't require high voltages, I think you can use a 30v bench power supply. Oh, also, I'm not sure, but with aluminum you might have to connect it to the negative side rather than positive.
Anodizing aluminum is a different process that’s a decent bit more involved and for steel the closest equivalent is parkerizing and that’s even more work
So the anodized titanium on my Osborne is 81 volts! More or less I never understood what that meant but I love the purple on the spine and it’s just awesome to know they did something like this more or less lol

Serializing up to the voltage you need by simply clicking 9V blocks together is brilliant!

Yes, the same set up but for aluminum you will need to use a sulfuric acid solution instead of the baking soda solution.

How did you connect the batteries when you needed more than 3? Alligator clips between each group of 2 or more?
Nope you just keep plugging batteries into each other in series and then connect to the open positive and negative terminals. It is plug and play.
Can you ano OVER an previous ano? Perhaps to create a combo? Obviously cleaner solid colors to barkeeper reset beforehand, but just curious!
