I refilled the disposables for a few years. Eventually the fitting would get rusty and not seal to my stove, or the valve would start leaking a little. It just became a hassle. Not to mention needing a temperature differential between the 20# and the empty. Flame King came along and I haven’t looked back since. And I have piece of mind that I’m being as safe as I reasonably can be.

The guy may have been filling his 1-pound propane tank in his garage with the garage doors closed which may have caused some of the escaping propane gas to ignite from a spark such as static electricity. Additionally, the 1-pound propane cylinders also have a pressure release valve which should have prevented the propane tank from exploding, right?

You just fill it 50 grams less than it was brand new. I put a brass cap on mine because I do not trust the shelf life of some of using a plastic cap. Done many times and when bubbles start to show I put an X on it and that will be the last fill up. Store and refill outside. Propane BBQ is outside so should the 1 pounders.

I don't know why anyone would be refilling a gas canister inside an enclosed room. There must have been a flame source like a pilot light in that garage to ignite the escaping gas.

polk county florida, where i live. the guy probably was refilling an old rusty tank that was sitting beside his garage for 20 years while he had it facing his lit bbq 2 feet away while inside an enclosed garage. people here aren't the smartest tools in the shed. incidences like these are probably unlikely to happen in normal circumstances.

By that logic you should stop driving a car, because things happen, especially when one isn't careful.
Make sure to never fill indoors.
Always away from any ignition sources
Make sure to weight the tank to prevent overfilling.
There's should be no reason for the tank to explode. They've been rated to withstand 1lb of propane easily

    • @RazorStrap

They have not been rated for repeated pressure cycling. Same arrogance as doomed Oceangate sub. Disposable tanks are thin wall aluminum. Repeated stress of pressure cycling will cause it to fatigue and explode. There is no need to be a Darwin award winner.

The explosion/fire would have been much quicker with a vented Fuel Keg!
The Fuel Keg is far superior for refilling, but the rupture was caused by combustion from using a flammable gas in an enclosed space, the results would have been the same either way.

I see it this way; I bought a fuel keg which is approved for refill for everyday consumption. I augment this with purchased 1lb propane bottles when I need a few more for travel. I have a refill adapter for the Coleman propane bottle if I need it for a significant emergency situation and the bottle I am using is relatively new and I follow all general best practice guidelines. I don’t recommend everyday refilling of the Coleman bottles which is playing roulette. I see that option as a last resort.

Common sense can be dangerous and just flat out wrong.

True sense would be to heed the manufacture's safe use instructions not to refill that tank.

How do you know when your Fuel Keg is no good any more? Does it have a re-cert date?

    • @RazorStrap
      @RazorStrap 7 дней назад

Yes. US-DOT has approved them for 12 years. Like the larger tanks, they are steel. Not thin wall aluminum. Can handle the pressure cycling. Thin wall aluminum will fatigue and explode.
Lot of people posting in here are making excuses for why it exploded not having anything to do with that it was a disposable. But they simply don't know and are going overboard with speculation. They do not know how many times that tank had been refilled. But even once it could fail. It is not structurally designed for that. Don't do as they do. Do as engineers and manufactures have told you how to safely use/NOT use their product.
The risk/reward/savings is beyond absurd. Risk life for a few dollars. Absurd.
