- Quick video of a boat I worked on a few summers ago with twin 12V92 engines.
The customer was having issues with the throttle controls but after checking everything out and spending 2hrs on the lake I was unable to duplicate the issues.
Don't remember the boat manufacture but i think it was about 60ft ish.
Can’t beat the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel.
There were a couple of ferries that ran out to Magnetic Island, QLD, Australia with dual 12V92s. I don’t know if they are still running, but they sounded beautiful on full power. Even people that knew nothing about them stood at the stern of the boat just to listen to them.
A truly great noise.
a 2 stroke detroit does not need an oil change just like a sled 2 stroke!
@@jlo13800, 2 stroke diesels and 2 stoke gas are two different animals entirely. They both have pistons, but that’s about all they have in common.
Were they some of Keiths Ally Cats? I can't remember the names but they ran a loop from Proserpine, via a few Islands out to Hamilton Island. I spent a few days up there repairing the digital dash boards that were very high tech in the 80's. Doing repairs between scheduled runs, in a tight cat hull crawling over an engine that's just been shut down, not fun.
@@raygale4198 Sorry, this was back in the 1980s and I can’t remember. We just took a day trip from Townsville to Magnetic Island. I was up in Townsville a few weeks ago and someone said they thought most boats that size have boring Volvo Pentas, don’t know how true that is.
If you can afford the boat that these engines are in you don't worry about how much fuel it uses or the cost of fuel.
That’s a nice sound. A lot of fuel burned but glorious Detroit symphony is worth it!

Any diesel under load and or WOT under load in the marine industry is something to experience if you're interested in motors. VErrrrrrrrry deceptive in how they hide actually how fast a big can go. a 50'' sport tuna boat w/ twin 1692's is massive .. a hickley 55 w/ twin man 1300's is awesome when standing on the aft deck seeing a rooster tail ...... from a big fat cow of a boat.. smoking the average outboard. commercial lobster boats with 2 speed transmission, 5 blade wheels and c19's .. The diesel engine be it a motor to drive a generator for a locomotive or an Azipod for the QM2 or a tanker. ma ma ma massive power.

cause they are electronic injected ... just had one on the dyno .... these things lack so much balls compared to allll the 4strokes the MTUs 2000s and 4000 series only way to go mtu does own this company now so everything’s come with mtu labels 😎

Clean and loud
run some ethanol as its 113 octane and makes way more power than diesel. Diesel is a shitty low octane fuel and makes little power.
@@jlo13800 Running ethanol in a diesel engine will destroy it. Don't give bad advice.
@@hudsonhawk0016 They did an ethanol run in an 8v92 2 stroke, need a glow plugh and ran 23:1 comp ratio. The Achates power 2 stroke is proposed to run it and ethanol can make much more power than diesel do to its cooling and 113 octane. Mix in a little castor 927 maxima 2 stroke for an awesome stench. I rigged ud my silver 8v92 2 stroke run run with BRP-XD-100 Etec oil though the bottom and some is pulled off and blended with the fuel. I got it to work on 87 octane regular for a bit though.
When a 2 stroke Detroit is setup correctly, very few diesel engines sound as good

12V Detroits run so smooth ,my favourite engine out of all the 71 series.

I ran a Bertram 54 with a pair of 12V92’s for ten years, I have to admit after keeping them running for ten years I was only to happy to get on a Viking 65 that has a pair of MTU 16V2000’s I would have to say I’m not a fan of those 12V92’s.😏 that old Bertram is in Guyana with its new owner.
@MrSeachaser175 the 2000 series was a big improvement over the 2 strokes.... they make a great noise, but they can be found lacking in many other areas!
@@theenglishmechanic. Agreed, yes I’ve had various issues with my MTU’s broken turbo shaft, leaking seawater seal on the raw water pump, oil leaks here and there, electronic control faults, and a few other minor faults but nothing to making me want to rip them out and toss them over board!😂

those Detroit's sound like a symphony of beautiful music. Used to enjoy " running the rack" , adjusting exhaust values and injector clearances while helping a friend in tuning his 671's. The old hot, smoky and inefficient 2 stroke Detroits will certainly be missed.
Yep, they sound great. Unfortunately all the newer Detroit's are 4 stroke.
@@theenglishmechanic. Yep, the 2 stroke Detroits were a character engine. Now DD has reverted to a boring computerized 4 stroke non distinguishable from any other. The times, they do change.
They really were quite efficient, in hp hours per gallon.

@@theenglishmechanic. I just looked up a new kubota n/a 35hp engine, and a 2-53 from 1959. Within a 1/4 of a hp hour per gallon. And the 2-53 has way few parts, lasts longer, is cheaper to overhaul and maintain, and sounds waaaay better.
If you had 4 cycles in place of these it would fill the whole engine room if you could get them in at all. I wished someone would apply newer injector technology to these old 2 cycle engines and clean them up. Great design.
I read somewhere there is a "Clean Camshaft " available for the 2cycle Detroit makes a game changer.
Achates Power are at it. Granted, they're only doing 3 and 4 cylinder designs right now, but a 92-cid-per-cylinder V12 opposed-piston engine would certainly be doable.
Modern electronic fuel injection, VGT's, and Eaton's high-twist TVS blowers would ramp up the power and fuel economy greatly.
@@rusty7720 there was clean cam technology in calif near Bakersfield CA, owner passed away and parts were sold a friend bought the parts. They got 8v-92 to tier 3 with no after treatment. I have a v12-71 tta with cct in it , is clean you can't smell it & and it netted 650 hp @ 1800 rpm.
Absolutely nothing sounds like the Detroit Diesel 2 strokes.

My Johnson 4L v8 2 stroke side oil dont sound to bad. I got a silver 8v92 to tinker with out back.
A few months ago I was talking to a young Detroit diesel mechanic and I asked him if they still done 71 and 92 engines, his reply was “”no I’ve never heard of them “” I’m like you’re kidding me aren’t you, then I thought about they introduced the series 60 in 86 or 87 because I remember my boss bought one ……. Then I looked at the mechanic and he wouldn’t have been born back in the 71-92 days, makes me feel old, haha
If he's a young lad he probably only knows S60, MBE and DD engines. Detroit Diesel in not part of the current "Detroit" brand owned by Daimler. Detroit Diesel is under the MTU/Rolls-Royce brand now.
But yes you can still get Reman 71 and 92 engines.
@@theenglishmechanic. oh ok when he said he had never heard of them I assumed they never sold anything for the American oil pumps, pardon my pun , they would build up crankcase pressure and spew out oil every where , the 8V-71 was almost dead even with the 903 when they were both naturally aspirated, and the 8V-92 was either seriously lacking in torque campared to a 400 Cummins or they would overtake everything else on the road , there was no in the middle with them.

Actually, the 6-53TA and 8-92TA are still "on the books" for "on demand contracts" through the US government (the very same government that outlawed them due to "emissions" issue's) for military use Only, both in the US and abroad. The 8-71TA was also still "on the books", up until 2014 or 2015.
@@Romans--bo7br I am well aware of the engines still being manufactured for military's use only (I have some great picture from the production line) but as for the general public there are no longer available. 👍

I worked on a 60 foot cray boat in West Australia during the early nineties for a few years. It was sold to a fisherman in NZ when the owner built a bigger vessel. Twin 12v92s and she screamed like a banshee at full noise and leaked oil like a sieve but
The thing was an absolute animal and working on that back deck has probably been the main reason I’m death as a post now !

Very true.... except the Series 92 "V 12" is Not a V12, other than by cylinder count. It is, redundant V6's, each with it's V6 firing order... Not a 12 cylinder firing order. The Only true V12 in the whole DD series of engine families, is the Series 71 V12.

Kleetus92.... so, what's stopping you?... it's Not like you can't find one, and it's certainly Not because of a lack of parts availability. Of course they will never sound like a V12... because they're Not... other than in the total number of cylinders, but that's all.

The way things are going these days, in this country and around the world, it makes me wonder if ANY of our "Desired" projects will ever become a reality.... my "gut" says No and in fact, may well become a completely moot point within this new year, most unfortunately, as outright survival may well become the Only "project" of concern and necessity.
I have a substantially modified 3-71 Detroit of my own design and build that I've been working on over the last few years that is just begging to become part of something with wheels, drive-line, a seat and a steering wheel.... but, I have other projects that are more pressing and of greater importance (especially in my beloved wife of many years' - way of thinking! lol).
PS: When I first saw your "name".... I thought of Kleetus McFarland of YT "fame". lol..... Hmmmm, are You - him? : )

Thre are still lots of DDEC 2 strokes around. See as many mechanical as I do DDEC.
Tuned s few of these back in my days never had a unhappy customer. One guy still has his 350/ 71 in grain truck still starts great after 23 years.

if you are controlling with the computer a question has electronic injectors, ask why I did that. with electronic cat 3516.
I keep forgetting that the 92 series engines had electronics during their lifetime.
I think they all did eventually. (maybe not the 53's)

@travcon8 Well, he was at the helm and couldn't duplicate the issue, so..... not too much... He was a very nice guy super relaxed... I think he enjoyed the spin on the lake as much as I did to be honest.

2:47 and 3:32 - Battery voltage drops off at higher engine revolutions, then recovers as revs drop. Is there an alternator problem?
I don't believe the customer had any issues with the charging system.
@@theenglishmechanic. I recently had a job load-banking dozens of gensets from 40kVA to 4MVA. It was a necessary part of the procedure to record battery voltages throughout the 4 hour period for all of them. The fluctuations I saw here would warrant further investigation, to be dealt with asap. (They were life critical units)

Just imagining the big black clouds as those engines revved. Must have been beautiful.
There isn't "big black clouds" from these.... these are DDEC controlled, plus the constant load on them from the time they're in gear... keeps the turbo's "loaded", so they respond Very quickly.
Used to drive a Ford L-9000, powered by a Detroit Diesel 6-71N. That engine never produced any smoke, regardless of temperature, load, and speed. The sound coming from beneath the hood, was incredible.
@@Romans--bo7br Unlike the 12V92 engines powering the landing craft I used to work on in the Navy. Those were all power-and smoke.
And the unique smell of the exhaust that those 2 strokes had!

What size, make and year boat?
I don't 100% remember all the specific's but I think it was a Sunseeker (possibly a RENEGADE) 60ft from the mid 90's.

Ah yes. Detroits were the MTUs of their day.
As good as the MTU's are..... I'll "take" any of the Detroit 2 cycles (especially Series 71, 149 and the 6-110) Any day, over Any modern MTU or ANY Other 4 cycle of any manufacture.

Unfortunately I do recall which injectors it had. I think 2350rpm was the rated max.

The engine are not new, I belive they are original from when the boat was built. (Late 90's I think)

It doesn't appear to be a fast boat, so I'm curious as to why it's set up so that the shafts rotate counter to what they'd normally turn.
Twin engines usually are set up to counter rotate the blades.
@@fredsisson6855 Yep, well aware. The last four boats I've owned have had twin diesel inboards. But they've all been right hand wheel on right, left hand wheel on left. This guy has 'em right hand on left, left hand on right. That reduces the advantage of propwalk when docking and is generally only done on boats that are very fast. This boat isn't fast. That's why I was curious why they were set up that way.

I would say they were pretty good engines in there day, it's just a pitty they no longer producing any marine engines.
That's what powered a majority of our equipment in WW2

@@louv4437.... you can turn Any 2 cycle Detroit into a "marine" version, with the changing of parts.. ie; roots blower, cam(s), heat exchanger, water cooled exhaust manifold(s) & turbocharger(s), governor type and injectors.... and lower compression pistons, depending what engine base you started with in the first place.

Very noisy motors a friend had a cruiser with twin 8v71 and although initially quite fun the high pitched buzz got wearing after w while.Give me a 4stroke Diesel any day for longer cruises.

All that wiring, electrical connectors, sensors, ecm modules and switches. That's where your problem is, remove all and go back to mechanical everything and it will out live you and I both.
To be fair these things are pretty reliable, DDEC4 was and still is a great control system. Basic, cheap and reliable.... and all the power......

As a diesel mechanic I barely fix the engine itself, constantly fixing electrical wiring thats "more reliable" than mechanical controls lol

I don't believe there ever was a 12V92, would have to be siamesed 6V92s. As with the 16V92 (2-8V92s).
12V71 came as one true engine or two siamesed.

Yes there is 12v92s and two different versions of them.
The 12V92 was 2 X 6V92 blocks with a one piece cast block girdle (upper pan) under the blocks to stiffen them. The 12V71 was the only one with a unique one piece block, thus allowing them to use 6 - 71 heads instead of the added complexity of using four 3-71 heads, it also was also only slightly longer than a 6 -71 letting it drop into truck frames. 12V71 was a fill in engine in the horse power wars before the 8V92T came along and made it redundant. I don't think the factory ever made a 12V71 out of V6 engines, it makes no sense, they did however make a 16V71 using to 8V71 blocks. Much later in the early 90's they made a 24V71 from two 12V engines, that was a sight to see! From crank to full rpm in under 2 seconds, smooth enough to balance a coin on the valve covers and a noise like a swarm of very large angry bees.

@@dalemarshall625 A lot of power utilities used them as emergency mobile generators due to their incredible governing and load acceptance, they could be loaded with 100% load in one step with barely a bump in frequency or voltage.
