In this video, I share my story of moving from a small town in Virginia to the wild streets of Los Angeles in the late 80s - and the surprising transformation that followed! 🌆🎸 I arrived in LA looking like a total outsider, with short hair, blue jeans, tank tops, and T-shirts, totally unprepared for the rock 'n' roll image that dominated the Sunset Strip scene.
From the moment I stepped out of my Mazda Pickup truck, I was thrown into a world of teased hair, makeup, and spandex that seemed like a rockstar uniform. At first, it seemed hilarious, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that image was everything in this city of dreams. Just like Axl Rose in the "Welcome to the Jungle" video, I had my own 'Sunset Strip Makeover.' 🤘
Join me as I look back on those unforgettable days, share some crazy stories, and talk about the transformation from a small-town kid to fitting right in with the rockstars of LA. If you've ever wondered what it was like to live through the Sunset Strip heyday, this video is for you! 🎤🔥

Hey Brad I'm 64 going to be 65 in March still have a full head of hair although gray now, sometimes I look in the mirror and think it looks like a wig too😂😂😂😂 keep the great stories coming man!
Thank you! Will do!
I was having a bad day I'm dealing with my very sick cat heartbreaking, but you doing that sucked in puckered lips face made me laugh so hard it made me feel a lot better thanks Brad
💔 hang in there, thoughts are with you. Fellow cat lover
Oh wow I am so glad more humour coming later today.
Prayers to you and your fur baby. Cats and dogs are the best.
Thank you so much for your wishes much appreciated @@Bluepillphil-d1w
@@jackb348animals never let you down thank you so much I appreciate it
Bro you did and still kinda do look like Kip Winger, lol. That’s a compliment 👍🏻
Thanks bro!
wow, great stuff Bad Brad. I remember all through the mid 80s and early 90s and playing in metal bands, I was always pretty much a blues guitarists and stocky build and wiry hair that no one could do anything with. When I was in a metal band, I would have to get my hair "relaxed" with chemicals and then trimmed, what a chore. I never looked right with the jeans tucked in the cowboy boots looks, hated it! I remember one day I got so sick of my "wig" that I went to a barber shop in the subway station in Times Square and had them basically give me a crew cut. I showed up at band practice and my singer at the time was like a mini Paul Stanley clone and he gasped and then chewed me out "you cut your hair???" good thing for me around that time blues was moving to the forefront and a lot of clubs started opening that had live blues, I thrived in that environment. All about timing! Take care, love this stuff.
Awesome story!
Conformity often pays well. People won't believe you're a professional painter unless you show up wearing whites. Painter = Tennis pro. Very engaging story Brad.👍👍👍
Thank you!
Nigel Tufnul turned it to 11
YES!
Braddah Brad.
Just came back from Japan to see Maiden and man,the sunset strip moved to Kabukicho which has a vibe and scene ( Imagine BTS/Pretty Boy Floyd stuff)
Any stories from the rainbow you can share?
Keep the sunset strip stories coming!
Tons of stories from the rainbow. More to come
You should do more on your experience with Tedesco. Was it after he had his Stroke ? How much was he involved in teaching etc... Thanks great stories.
I think this was before his stroke. He would give seminars and tell story’s.
Brad, Do you remember a band call Hans Naughty from your Sunset Strip days?
I def remember seeing their ads in the local mags.
Did you go to GIT when Frank Gambale was there?
He was with Electric band at the time but would pop in and out.
Was the Australian guy who evaluated you Brett Garsed? Was the fast German guy Bernd Steidl?
Looking forward to more of your GIT/ Sunset Strip stories
No I think this was way before Brett was around. The German guy was just a student, I think his name was Klaus. Thank you!
@@badbradIf you were at level 1B, Do remember what level the German guy was placed in?
maybe 2 B?
Wow you brought back to my Berklee days ,but I took a curriculum in songwriting and guitar ,I did had to auctionto be accepted but they placed me with all the same people,no skill level.I did finish and graduated with a masters .Which I’m proud ,it was one of my bucket list.I did the whole sunset strip thing but in Louisiana,we look at it as a musical Mardi Gras,no big deal to us😂😂😂😂
Congrats on the Masters...wow cool!
Thanks ,it was a challenging experience

Alright no scuba gear, or life vests .. a very good sign. Could never grow my hair that long during the mid 60’s & beyond, reached shoulder length. Had a good laugh with the pucker… pucker up up buttercup 🤣. So cool that Teddy Tedesco chose you for the Brad/Grad recital.. that man was an absolute master among a group of the LA session guys
We survived Helene. Tedesco was such a cool dude.
totally awesome ☝️
Thank you!!
Axle Rose was from Lafayette Indiana actually I went there in 2002 and I saw it as a renovated college town. Obviously not a rock and roll haven but not some hillbilly town really. I certainly never saw anyone with straw in their mouth there
It’s an exaggeration by Axl
Funny thing is I missed the 80s. I got out of the navy in 90. Hairbands were gone or just hanging on. So my first band attire was flannel. 😝
Oh ya. Fell on Flannel days.
Mr. Douglas from Green Acers wore a 3 pc suit when he plowed the field.
lol
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose their soul...
Or their hair
Lmao. KILLIN me man. “I had a good haircut for a little while”.
lol
WOOOO
Woooooo
I think John Frusciante was at GIT same year as you.
I don’t remember him and I would remember that face I was actually listening to the chili’s shortly after I got out of school
bro i Like you stories and you chanel but dont sit so close to the camera and speak in a low creepy voice. Look at my name I know what I am talking about
Bro let me tell my tales the way I want to tell them. I don’t come to your job and direct you…..
@@badbrad😂 amazing response
You have drive, and your bad. Great stories
Thanks for the view!
What's up with the whispering? it's creepy af, and makes the videos unwatchable.
Sorry you’re so sensitive.
Really man. Just let the dude be himself and if you don’t like it don’t watch him. I bet you do something someone thinks is creepy af also but you know what… who cares.
The wig actually creeps me out more 🤣🤣🤣
@@MrGrand2000 wig?
He’s a little slow FTF.
The old cinder block practice rooms at MI. When I was there I remember Peavy and Crate amps chained to the floor of those rooms.I would watch Scoot Henderson jam out in one of these little rooms. When he was done he would tell us students he needed one of us to get him stoned. Good Times😄
That's awesome!
You got to stay in Scott's Private Lesson Room???
He used to chase all of us 'f###ingredients metal dudes" out back in the Fall 1988- Spring 1989 sessions. I guess, he only wanted to teach the players who were into jazz and fusion, as if our tuition wasn't as green as theirs!
I jammed with Scott a couple times in that room around 87 but I wasn’t a full on metal dude.
@@badbrad Awesome! Good for you.
It really bummed me out, because him and Gambale were still up and coming fusion players, and I really wanted to see what they were about.
At least Frank was very accessible and open to everyone.
Oh man Scott would bust everybody’s balls in there. The first time I tried to play I was nervous and my timing was off and he was shouting “time” at me. I pulled it together the next time and it was going good and Jeff Berlin and Gambale all came in and were jamming with us
Another great Sunset Strip story, Brad!
Thank bro!
