Awesome shelters made! I do worry about them eventually rotting though. Im guessing these are just temporary structures. Also, all that pile of old bush clippings etc.. will you be using all that stuff to make homemade compost!? Dude if i had that land i would be making a TON of compost to grow my own food. You could makeshift some huge greenhouse/pollytunnel on that land. I very much look forward to watching the updates. Not sure if you are into growing stuff.. but once you start its kinda hard to stop, especially seeing as things can be done organicly, and just helps the environment in general.
I used to be guardian of 8 acres of woodland in Scotland with the same vision as you but getting planning permission is notoriously hard ..and usually its only given if the land is your source of income like making charcoal ...and then there is the 28 day stay rule too..but you can put a structure on it if it's for tools to maintain the land... Good luck with your planning application, I hope you succeed, but be prepared for disappointment... on the other hand there are a fair few people that do it without permission in ecohouses/round houses made from the materials off the land, while crossing their fingers if you know what I mean ..so its doable if you are careful 😁
Nice bodge, I have a couple of suggestions to make them a bit stronger if you're interested. Triangles are your structural friend, I would add at least one diagonal brace to each face if you get my meaning. Add two guy lines to any vertical poles forming triangles, they might be useful on some of the horizontal "beams" too. Any loose flappy tarp edges can be tied down - find 20mm'ish diameter stones and fold the tarp around it and tie a knot around the rock and down to a stake in the ground. Also useful if any of the grommets/eyelets get pulled out. Buy 100m roll of paracord 550, damn handy stuff. Good luck, have a cracking Hogmanay and New Year.
Thanks for the advice, I’ve taken it onboard 👍🏼 the shelters worked great and if I need to build anymore in the future this will all come in handy. Have a lovely New Year 😁
a skeletal framework over the top of the tarps can be effective in holding in and locking down the tarps... thats worked well in the past... make sure of good tie down points at either end of the ribs and where possible at the points where the ribs cross over oneanother... you're doing great... happy new year darlings and live your dreams xxc
Great to see how you both go about getting started on your adventure. Yes, at the end of the project you will be able to make a list of the things you've done well and not so well, but right now to are still very much in the early learning mode. Getting things under a cover which only needs to stand up for 2 days is a great first step, but later on a bit more of a wind break might be a useful addition to protect you under the shelter whilst you dine. Some people might choose to buy a garden gazebo, but more eco-friendly people might like to use what they have to harvest from the land. No criticism on my part as it's your choice as to how you progress with your project. Either way, it's fascinating to see you making progress towards your dream home. Will keep watching with interest and best wishes.
Sont know how far back you are with your videos . Not sure if they would survive a strong winter storm. But best of luck with them . Your plot of land is beautiful .❤
A lovely bit of bush craft ! Very satisfying even if it doesn’t last forever. There’s so much to learn from just giving it a go & using what’s available in the bush. Well done!,,
Wee tip, you've got a ready made cooking shelf, think about using the flat surface in the second shelter, it'll be a bit safer, less chance of your tarp melting.....
You should have dug post holes for the branches, trying to rest some medium sized rocks against them doesn't do a lot unfortunately, OK for a temporary shelter but you might have some issues if/when the wind picks up
If we were allowed to stay on the land then I would agree but like I said in the video we just needed something temporary because of the rain forecast and we took the shelters down when we left 👍🏼
@@gedreillyhomestead6926in the United Kingdom if you buy land that doesn't already have a house etc on the land you need to get planning permission to build on you land otherwise you can only stay on your land for 28days per year
Happy New year to you both😀 Your shelters look great but hope it doesn't snow too much or your shelters will be flats..... keep up the excellent content 👍
you remind me of me when I was young, and when I purchased 30 acres of forest on a semi remote island. I lived in a tent and cleared a house site,, I wasted alot of time, energy and money too, phaffing around on things that didnt really matter, What mattered was clearing the land and getting a house / cabin on it..
All in good time my friend. So far I haven’t wasted any time or money! We had a lovely couple of weeks on our land before heading back south and the time spent clearing the old dwelling and finding the services is all for planning purposes 👍🏼
I did much the same with a house in France. Numerous trips down and doing jobs that always took 10x longer than I thought they would, and very little to show for the time, effort, and expense. In the early days I was too caught up in the romantic adventure. When reality dawned I realised that getting builders in was the only way to get it done. A digger and a professional operator can do the job of 50 men in a day. It still took ten years to get it to a liveable state, and it took me another 6 months living there to get the interior completed with a bathroom, kitchen, and complete decorating. 6am-11pm in 35C every single day was back breaking. Lol.
Nice channel. Until you get planning permission, sure nothing can be permanent. Think id have used the tarpaulin, all 5 metres of it, to build something around the car. Sure, you need to move the car for supplies, but a semi permanent - big logs in the ground - structure which you can park besides. An earlier comment mentioned a shed, when legally possible, as big as you can afford. Respects x
Not sure if I missed it; did you talk about which way the wind predominantly whips through there is there is a storm? That would be a major concern to your shelters.

Well, those shelters may not be perfect, but you are learning on the job, and they serve the purpose, seem practical for what you want, so well done! I can’t wait to see the well discovery. Are you allowed to cut down trees if required on your land and do you intend to? We are not staying on the land for very long because we are not allowed due to Scottish laws. We have a very nice motorhome already but it needs a new MOT plus some mechanical work to get it back on the road so we decided to use the truck and the roof tent which is a perfectly good tent by the way. We enjoyed every minute whilst we stayed there even if we are cold.
