    I have never seen so many people. Make so many mistakes because of excitement in my life.. Guys... Think about it logically. They're hovering a drone approximately where the landing computer would be to trigger the TCS (Tower catching system.) [Chop sticks as you call them.] They're running simulated tests to trigger one arm so they don't wreck the other. Once it's calibrated. Like you said today in your stream more than a dozen times. They will configure the other arm and set the system for the proper place to catch the Booster and Starship. They're using 14.1 as a "punching bag." To ensure they're with in tolerance and ensuring everything functions before the big moments. You caught A slow test.(Priming.) A static test and a full power test. The dampers are touching the rocket and moving it slightly. They don't need to do a drop test they know the rocket can move less than 3m per second already. Thanks to the splash down. Which is almost nothing. The fatigue your are referring to. Is what engineers call structural failure. Which will cause the tanks to shear. Usually good for lost of usages if the material isn't pushed beyond it's recommended limits. To conclude The final test before inspection was a full tower test. Reset which they then were tweaking to get it right. As it stand today... Testing looks good. I imagine the remainder of the day is getting the other arm working again. There appears to be no damage either.... They don't want to reduce the length of the TCS yet because they don't know the margins wind intensity will play... I imagine 2-3 feet at most.

    • @imconsequetau5275
      @imconsequetau5275 7 месяцев назад +1

      In these early tests, the booster has extra propellant on board in order to prolong hover time. If two Raptor engines suddenly shut down and/or explode, the remaining 3rd engine won't be sufficient, and the booster will rapidly crash. With plenty of propellant, it will RUD and burn everything.
      If at least two engines continue to work and software detects *_anything_* out-of-spec, I don't expect the booster to stay near the complex. It will soft-land in, or explode over, the Gulf of Mexico.
      Otherwise, the catch arms will close, the rails will rise to the booster hardpoints, and the booster will peacefully shut down - along with the spectacle of people screaming and jumping. Perhaps the booster will then be lowered onto the OLM and detanked.
      Excitement guaranteed, no matter what.

They might be having a newer design for OLM 2 that are more robust and blowing tower 1 is non issue as the next ship (flight 6) also need to change according to the issue encountered during flight 5.

    Why do they disable FTS before critical phases of flight, such as landings? I would think you would want to be able to activate FTS if it's clear the booster is not going to land correctly and possibly damage the launch tower. Having it explode a few hundred feet over the pad is probably better than letting it crash into the tower.

    I was thinking, if ITF 5 shows a good de-orbit burn what would be next on the agenda? Could ITF 6 be a dual launch flying two starships simultaneously and have them perform a starship to starship propellant transfer before the propellant depot is put in orbit to verify docking systems and test the boil off rate and things like that before they put the depot in orbit. They have three boosters on standby, they are working on the second tower, I think they could maybe launch two starships simultaneously, do the orbital docking, transfer the propellant from one into the other leave one in orbit to study the propellant boil off rate and deorbit the other one like the others.

      Maybe during IFT6, it can return to the launch site. That depends on if IFT-5 can retro-fire in zero-G.
      I presume the two towers will allow catching both booster and ship, holding one on each.

    Did Musk say in today’s Tim Dodd interview that next flight.just virtual attempt ?

      I believe the interview was filmed before IFT4 so that's the 'next flight' he was referring to.

    Is there an engineer out there that can calculate the TNT equivalent to Super Heavy crashing into the stand? 5k pounds of TNT?

    I wonder if the parking garage will be a good example of EV charging or not. I bet they retrofit with the rate of build.

    What is "25 centimeters per square meter"? One value is one-dimensional, and the other is two-dimensional.

    • @rsteeb

      A boo-boo. 25cm per hour would be a rate of [extreme] precip.

    Don't try a catch until the second tower is ready . . .

    FAA will have a few questions before authorizing booster to land on ground. It will need to consider the impact of the explosion on the whole area, including Mary's house. What if it the big bang breaks windows? Will it spill fuel onto the environment if it crashes on the beach? etc etc. Those are all concerns not examined for a crash at sea. A aunch happens to a precisely defined spot (launch pad) but a landing is more fungible and could potentially be over a wider area.

  • @jackfrost3573
    @jackfrost3573 7 месяцев назад

    I do not see the need to do a catch attempt on the pad until there is another fully functional launch pad. Or build a chopstick catching pads....until the bugs are worked out it seen foolish.
