I really love the pacing of this video, Matt! The different section quickly show casing the characteristic of the lens in each category makes it really easy to digest all the way to the comparison. This is the first 50mm lens I started shooting with after I picked up my M240. Optically it is clean and mechanically it is smooth. It is almost too clean like my Canon L glass on my work cameras. As soon as I started buying vintage Leica glass, this along with my 21mm 1.5 has been sitting on the shelf. I had full intension to get a whole set of TTartisan M mount prime and adapt them for video work while using them on my Leica, however, my attention (and budget) has been shifted heavily to vintage lenses. I am sure once I ran out of old fast glass to buy, I will get back on that goal, but right now, it is just too much fun to work with legacy lenses. With all that said, I really do enjoy this line up of TTartisan offerings.
I had a TT Artisans 50 mm f/1.4 but sold it after testing it on my Leica digital CL and SL2 about 1.5 years ago. It wasn’t critically sharp at infinity, and exhibited more chromatic aberration than I tolerated back then. IIRC, the rangefinder cam is not guaranteed to be calibrated out of the box. If one has a digital M camera, they can accurately calibrate the lens. If they have only M film cameras, they’ll need to borrow someone’s digital M camera. It was indeed a bit heavy. I also tried three Voigtländer lenses at that time and thought they were a bit nicer. Matt, you compared this lens to a previous Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4. The latest Leica version (ASPH II) allows closer focusing (0.45 m vs. 0.7 m) and has more aperture blades (11 vs. 9). I recently purchased the new version and love it. It’s definitely pricey. The prices of TT Artisans lenses are certainly low (the 50 f/1.4 is on sale for $314), and I’ll try another one soon (but not the 50 1.4).
Matt's link shows a sale price of $314 + free shipping at the time of my posting (Black Friday, 24 NOV, 0700'ish Texas time). Just bought one, shipped free to Texas. Very nice. I only have a film M-body, so it looks like I will have to do the Scotch tape trick to calibrate/verify focus upon receipt. Thanks, Matt.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It's so hard for me to shoot at f/1.4 to f/2.8 here in Texas. My M5 does fine at 500-1000th of a second, but even in the winter I am drowning in sun. I am guessing these ship from China, because nobody in the USA had the same price as the link you provided. I am excited, regardless. My 21 & 35mm's are Voigtlander. I just couldn't stomach another $800 lens just to get a 50mm. You saved me. Thank you. If I don't have a couple frames I can fire off in the M5 then I will do the TTArtisan focus chart with Scotch tape across the open shutter. I'll then snap a pic of the fake ground glass in the back of the Leica with my EOS R5 and a 100mm macro to see where the focus hits on a big computer screen. I think I will do that regardless, because I will then know that if a photo looks out of focus that it was my fault and not that of the lens not having been calibrated.
Hey Matt, thanks for the great video! I went fromna Voigtländer 50/1.2 (sold because too big) to a Summilux 50/1.4 asph (sold because of ninja stars) and now have the relatively new Voigtländer 50mm/1.5. How would you rate the ttartisan compared to the Voigtländer 50mm 1.5 ?
Thanks! Tricky! Don't buy as bigger than 1.2. It might be sharper than the little 1.5. My current fav is the LLL Elcan 50/2 (see that video). It's more arty than these 3 mentioned lenses and small. I love small! (I have 2 copies!)
Very interesting, though the Leica seems to have seems to have higher contrast at the plain of focus, and lower contrast in the out of focus areas. Speaking of filter threads, the Leica’s hood and filter threads are held in place by one very small screw. Mine fell out, Leica USA doesn’t sell replacement screws, but insist that it be sent in to service, really, for the cost of shipping, insurance, and labor, I could buy a TTArtisan…😜
Hi Matt, really enjoy your channel. I'm new to Leica. I added a Barnack iiic with a 50/2 collapsible Summicron a few months ago and this past week I purchased an M3 (without a lens). I've ordered the TTArtisan 50/1.4 in hopes that I'll get more contrast shooting it on the M3 w/Tri-X than I did shooting HP5+ on the iiic. But I have a question (I don't know if you answer questions here or if you have the time to read these comments). My question is: Should I get a LTM to M lens adapter? Then add LTM lenses to the pile rather than M-mount? Maybe the Voigtländer 35.
The problem with these lenses is the calibration. Normally if you have adjusted the lens on a digital Leica M, you do not have to do it again for the film Leica M because the flange focal distance (FFD also known as the flange-to-film distance), is the same : 27,8 mm. If you don't have a Leica M digital, all you have to do is ask a friend to lend you one. Great video as usual.
I don’t believe Leitz Wetzlar is stupid? It looks similar, but how does the lens reacts in post? How does the lens reacts in difficult blue hour, near dark street shootings. I take my Leica lens over anything else, because contrasts and colors stay stable with it. I had two TT lenses. For the money not bad, but in the long run… mhhhhhhh….
Some awesome photos from Valencia here that I haven't seen yet, I like the couple with the hats on the square, you should frame it and hang in the studio as background! Thanks Thomas, yes i've not had chance to share many from Valencia. Yes it does seem wrong that TTA can just copy a Leica lens and reverse engineer but equally it let's more people use Leica cameras with affordable lenses I guess.
I had the ttartisan lens and was not keen on the look. The colours and whole look were different. I don’t think it’s comparable to a Leica lens. It may be sharp but that is not all. I didn’t like it. I much prefer my 50mm summicron.
Thanks David, I prefer small lenses and it's less of a creative lens but for sharpness it did well. That said the 35 TT APO is very sharp but it flared to much to keep it.

Nice video and great comparison, but... increasingly, the question isn't "Buy the Leica lens or the TTArtisan lens?" but "Buy the TTArtisan or the Light Lens Lab or the Thypoc... or step up a little more in price and buy the Cosina/Voigtlander, or a little more yet and buy the [Cosina] Zeiss?" ...and that's not even a full list! Suddenly we seem to be living in a utopia of interesting third-party M-mount lenses...
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom. There’s still another interesting M mount lens made by a cone lens manufacturer, Thypoc Simera lenses. Tried the 35 and 28 f1.4’s, beautiful tiny cinestyle lenses with cinestyle zone focusing indicators.
This lens is remarkably cheap in price. Can we be sure that it is not made partly or wholly with forced labour? The ownership and manufacturing location(s) are somewhat vague.
12 times cheaper, can't believe it !! Everybody knows Leica is insanely expansive, but we all assume (at least I did) that high quality comes at this price. Now what could Leica possibly say to justify one should pay 1100% more to get 10% more quality ?? I've longed for a 50 lux for quite a time and recently had the opportunity to buy the 2023 model (used, of course, but only 20% cheaper). Now you make me regret it !😰
I like a £400 lens paired with my £7000 camera. So long as they keep making lenses that come this close to leica lenses, in terms of quality, I'll keep buying them.
I’m still confuse about a camera for 5k and a low budget lens. I try to life china free. I know that this is not possible, but price is not everything. Just my thoughts
Yes, it's only recently become fashionable to do these. They did the 28mm LTM after I asked many times and Voigtlander have a few now too which is amazing. I have all mentioned LTM lenses. (and from LLL too)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom But they don't produce the 35mm color skopar in ltm anymore. And finding a used one is quite the challenge if you don't want to import from japan. They could just sell a different mount for most of their lenses, every M-Mount lens is convertible with an exchange of the flange in theory.
what is the point of promoting "cheap" lenses made in china (an autocratic country) ? I would rather pay more for a Leica lens made in Germany and help preserve some industrial activity in Europe. Only Leica lenses go on my Leica cameras. Beware of short sighted thinking ...
Thanks, I review all lenses for Leica equally regardless of the brand. I know some people only use Leica lenses and that's great. I enjoy a range of lenses.
Peoples all have different opinions , you may criticise China , I do hate China as Vietnamese we are in war with China for thousand years and still now as they continue to occupy ours land and killing ours fisher man’s but here we are not talking about politic because America and Europe aren’t better than China with wars and invading many countries around the world , unjustified killing millions innocents peoples . On this video we are talking about lens of different country made and compare quality . Let the peoples decide which lens they buy and respect theirs choices. Don’t involve politic on this video . This is my opinions
That’s Chinese … for us: they are able to copy and even improve some things. It’s their way of making a compliment to the inventors by copying them. Before I buy a lens or other things made in autocratic or dictatorial countries I use what I have, save some money and buy a lens made in Germany, Japan or Portugal ... a bargain is not always an „amazing“ value when you look behind the scenes. Always good light!
@@Bernard-ux2eb … a completely different formula? Ok, interesting, … how so as those Chinese lens producers want to create the so called “Leica look” … as we have many RUclips videos promoting this? Always good light;-)
@@jensruckert4763 Some (most) of these Chinese lenses aren't good, same as many Japanese and German lenses. This one happens to be a gem and a gem for pennies. The other one worth looking at is the 7Artisans 1.4/28 ASPH in M-Mount which is also available as the FE-Plus edition, optimised for the thicker Sony sensor stack. Many people want the "Leica Look" but can't afford it. Those who can afford it will just buy Leica. I honestly don't think these Chinese lenses will have any impact at all on Leica sales. If anything, it's much more likely Voigtlander and Zeiss are eating into Leica sales, the Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35 ASPH being a case in point. This isn't to achieve the Leica look though. These brands have their own specific drawing style, such as the Zeiss pop. Apart from the TTartisan 50mm, all my other manual focus primes are Carl Zeiss.
Jens, I’m pretty sure you are the type that is mainly “concerned” with the Made in China part. Out of respect for this “channel” I won’t call you out for your hypocrisy…
Imagine a future where you are undermining Leica by promoting inexpensive copies. One day, you may find it impossible to purchase a Leica SL3 or Leica M12 due to their bankruptcy. This could be a result of influential RUclipsrs endorsing cheaper alternatives. Now, I ask you, how does this impact the reputation of the Leica brand?
@@AndrejsZavadskis imagine being mad, as a consumer, about economic competition. Stuff like this shows all the money in the world won’t buy intelligence or common sense.
Undermine away! The prices Leica charges are stupid. They are pure luxury charges they know they can get away with because some fool will buy their stuff.
People who buy new Leica lenses aren't likely to replace them with TTartisan. Rather, the TTartisan's may compliment their Leica collection. People like me bought this TTArtisan 1.4/50 ASPH in Sony E-mount because it cost £109 Inc delivery, as new, open box deal. It's awesome by the way. Really good.
Always those cheap Chinese lenses... remember: NO social security, NO real income. So Chinese lenses will always be cheap as hell. Iwill buy Leica, because it's REAL pricing for European products. Besides I own 2 Voigtlander lenses but I will never buy Chinese products for my 4 Leica M cameras because of those reasons. If China would have social security and "to live on wages" the 7:03 n yes.
This is the reason why western people never accept that china is making great product with low price, they always pull out forced labour or social security to defend. But even Chinese, they dont care. Not wonder why Europe countries are being smashed by China in global market.

Use eBay link below and use the name I list. Mine is from eBay
I have that Chinese watch. It's really good, especially for the money.
Great! I only discovered it recently. Waiting for a decent strap to arrive. Hard to say no for the price!
Yes! For me it’s the big brands Leica/Voigtlander/Zeiss+LLL then the others but I’ve it tried the Thypoc yet!
Superb comparison Matt
Thank you!
you just saved me 4k !!!!
Haha great!
This lens is remarkably cheap in price. Can we be sure that it is not made partly or wholly with forced labour? The ownership and manufacturing location(s) are somewhat vague.
I use lenses at face value but yes some don’t like Chinese lenses for whatever reasons.
5:17 nice shot
Thanks!
Mine lives on my M9!
Lives on my Sony A7RIII.
Great stuff! Anything on an M9 is good! :)
Now you make me regret it !😰
The Leica lens is still better and will hold it's value but the TTA lens is good for those wanting something similar for less.
I like a £400 lens paired with my £7000 camera. So long as they keep making lenses that come this close to leica lenses, in terms of quality, I'll keep buying them.
Yes it helps people that can only afford the cameras but not the lenses too!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Definitely! I'm still broke after that M10m purchase several months ago. lol
I’m still confuse about a camera for 5k and a low budget lens. I try to life china free. I know that this is not possible, but price is not everything. Just my thoughts
Yes I understand, I try to review a full range of lenses so something for everyone.
Wish they would make a decent 35mm f/1.4 M lens.
7Artisans make a 35/1.4 too. See that video. (I just use 35mm f2 lenses now like the LLL 35/2 or Ultron 35/2).
12 times cheaper to get very few difference. This is affordable and it's a reason why I bought this lens first. XD
Yes I was surprised/ impressed!
the 'lux looks sharper with more contrast... i'd rather spend the extra $
Yes at mid-far distances the Lux is definitely sharper (and as sharp up close).
Yes the 4300$+ “extra”😂
If only they would make more lenses with the option of ltm mount 😢
Yes, it's only recently become fashionable to do these. They did the 28mm LTM after I asked many times and Voigtlander have a few now too which is amazing. I have all mentioned LTM lenses. (and from LLL too)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom But they don't produce the 35mm color skopar in ltm anymore. And finding a used one is quite the challenge if you don't want to import from japan.
They could just sell a different mount for most of their lenses, every M-Mount lens is convertible with an exchange of the flange in theory.
😊
Thanks!
Get some model paint, paint out the 7Artisans name and no one would ever know except the most die hard Leicans.
Haha yes!
I'm.surprised it's so easy to.practically clone a Leica lens. I would have thought that at least the red dot.on the lens would be trade marked.
Yes it does seem like a cheeky slap in the face to copy lenses so exactly (and then charge 12x less)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Why spend years innovating when you can copy in a fraction of the time.
@@davegballIt isn't a copy. It's a completely different optical formula. The only copy'ish bit is the font style.
Totally different lens.
what is the point of promoting "cheap" lenses made in china (an autocratic country) ? I would rather pay more for a Leica lens made in Germany and help preserve some industrial activity in Europe. Only Leica lenses go on my Leica cameras. Beware of short sighted thinking ...
You are welcome to pay what you like. But the result isn't any better is it?
No Voigtlander or Carl Zeiss?
Thanks, I review all lenses for Leica equally regardless of the brand. I know some people only use Leica lenses and that's great. I enjoy a range of lenses.
Anyone not using these brands are missing out! I've replaced some Leica lenses with these.
It's not a copy. It's a completely different optical formula.
That's like saying any third party lens in M-mount is a copy.
Thanks, I just use all lenses at face value and test regardless of the brand/ country.
If Leica went bankrupt in this situation you just invented, that’s their problem, not his. What a stupid comment.
@@hellatightdude hope one day he gets cheap 7artisan camera for 500 usd
Thanks yes some other viewers prefer non-Chinese too.
This is the reason why western people never accept that china is making great product with low price, they always pull out forced labour or social security to defend. But even Chinese, they dont care. Not wonder why Europe countries are being smashed by China in global market.
