- This video features Tim Kelly's award-winning, classic studio portrait that has been a "hit" for over three decades. Countless high-end photographers world-wide use Tim's lighting set-up and posing techniques. Kelly's instruction is never based on the use of any certain brand of camera, lights, backgrounds or modifiers. Instead, we teach techniques and goals. One's knowledge and artistic choices make the image, not the camera.
This assignment was for an image that would become a large painted canvas portrait for a client collector. Because we knew exactly what was needed, the shoot was short and simple. Even with just one outfit and one background, many great images were produced to get to that "ONE".

Hi Tim, I enjoy all your video's and thank you so much for sharing your skill and knowledge. You are one of the few photographer's that I keep returning to. I'm strictly amateur, and have the rare opportunity of a venue for a day (next week) to allow me to use my lighting properly (ie more space). Your lighting is beautiful, but never seems to be set up as expected. As in this video it appears that one Softbox is to the side of the little girl and another a little more to a 45º angle with reflector for fill. I wonder, does the first light mention provide a rim light. once again Tim many thanks and wishing you well.
Thanks for watching! As in 95% of my studio lighting, I use two light sources on one side, reflectors on the other, redirecting some of that main light power. The other light (behind the key light) is mostly for a consistent background - but it will often "kiss" a little edge light on out subject as well.
*Tim Kelly's Master Photo Techniques* This is intersting
So you do the paintings too or have them farmed out. Very nice work handling your clients. The end result painting was top notch.
I do most of them. When I get busy I will send out to another artist who knows my style. Even then, when I get the painter file back, I work on its final stage prior to output.
Bellissima bambina...questa farà strada...😉👍❤️
Beautiful young Lady
She was EASY!!! Thanks for watching.
Yes, she is absolutely beautiful isn't she. Just so amazingly cute, and very royal princess quality looks too. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous, and so lovely to look at all the time too.
Simply gorgeous. Your lighting is beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Interested in the dual soft boxes next to each other from subjects right. Is that mainly for use on the background?
The 4x6 box is mostly for the overall background value, but it does have a role in subject's lighting scheme. It's all in my many lighting vids. Lighting 101, Mastering the 4x6 Softbox and Studio portrait lighting. Thanks for watching.
Thank you, great job.
Thanks for watching!
Ha sido de bendición para mi encontrar tu canal para mejorar mis fotos. Me suscribo y comparto tus técnicas con todos mis colegas. Gracias, saludos desde Rep. Dominicana!
How was the painting at the end, done? Through software?
Yes, Corel Painter.
hello, what is the size of the backdrop you are using?
I use 10x12 muslin, usually in a matched pair so I can create a full length set easily. Please see my video on the channel under classic videos. Using Muslin Backgrounds.
Thanks for watching.
